Good specs is very much a "depends" thing - depends on how high res you are running, if you are using multiple monitors, what sort of framerate is acceptable for you, how much anti aliasing you need to enjoy the visuals, and a lot more.
There are tons of sites out there that can give you a good breakdown, but for example this is the laptop I have at home, permanently hooked up to the TV when I am not traveling, sitting alongside my PS3:
Lenovo IdeaPad Z585 Laptop, AMD A8 4500M, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 15.6" TFT, DVDRW, AMD 7640G, Webcam, Windows 8 64bit
It's nothing amazing but it runs everything I have tried, albeit with reduced settings. Having that HDMI out is awesome.
It cost me $545 in August last year, so you'll be able to pick up something considerably better for the same price today.

To some degree - things like extra memory, faster/larger hard drives and so on, for sure. When it comes to graphics and CPU, it can get a bit more tricky. If you're in it for the long haul then getting a desktop PC is just way easier down the line.
If portability/travel is a must, and you see yourself using the same machine for more than a couple years, then invest in something a bit pricier. There's not really much way to 'future-proof' yourself in the world of PC gaming. It is more a case of 'how much do I want to spend in order to get the most out of the games currently on the market, and what will be coming in the next 6 months or so'.
Probably your greatest consideration is determining what is the most recent version of DirectX that the GPU can run, as that will at least mean that new games are playable, even if they don't look as good as they will on a $2500 machine.
It's really all about weighing up what you are using the machine for, and then browsing sites to find the best portable GPU in your price range and then ensuring the laptop's other specs meet your requirements.
Part man, part Internet.

You guys just might never understand why console gamers stick to consoles instead of a PC.
Whoever it was who said "the only advantage consoles have are inconsequential exclusive games and most of them get ported anyway" is severely mistaken. When was the last time Nintendo ported ANYTHING to the PC? There are just always going to be people like me who enjoy the console exclusive franchises more than anything else.
Sure, sometimes being faithful to companies like Nintendo can put you through a few dry spells... like how the 3DS is amazing but has an underwhelming number of good titles for it, not to mention the atrocity known as Wii U... but you can never turn people like me off of games like Kirby and Zelda, because even though they're usually rehashes of the same thing they get better every time.
Also the whole emulator thing? You don't need a gaming computer for that. A simple, cheap computer will do.
It's like I said in another thread. The whole "superiority" complex you guys have for PCs, gamers like me just don't care that much about that, and are just as happy playing classic stuff with outdated graphics as we are with the newer, "better" games. Don't get me wrong, Gran Turismo 5 was pretty amazing but I'd be just as happy playing some old Super Nintendo title.
I can pretty much guarantee you, unless some force of nature or extremely appealing game compels me, I would rather buy a PS4 and play the new Kingdom Hearts than buy a gaming PC just to have a bunch of games whose only selling points are better graphics and better MMO's or FPS's which can probably be played on the PS4 anyway.

Exclusives are pretty much the only thing consoles have going for them.
You can set up your PC to work just like a console. If you only want it for gaming, hook it up to your TV, set it to boot straight into Steam Big Picture mode, connect a controller, and voila! You can also add your non-steam games to Steam so you can launch them from there.
Then there is the sales. I have around 70 games on Steam, and with very few exceptions I never paid more than 20 bucks, many of them I got for 5 or less (And these aren't cheap indies, they're 1-2 year old AAA games). They also give away games for free sometimes. I got the first Metro game like that.
And then there's the graphics. The PS4 can reach around 1.8 teraflops of raw computing power. The latest AMD card reaches 11.5 teraflops. Consoles can code closer to the metal, but this is also making inroads on PC. AMD has Mantle, and NVIDIA and Microsoft are both going the same direction with GPU's and DirectX 12. Intel also has increasingly decent integrated graphics in their CPU's. You can play most PC games today without a dedicated GPU.They won't look great, but it works.
Resolution is also running away on PC. 1080p at 60fps is normal on a PC, while consoles (esp. XboxOne - neener neener) still struggle to reach even that. The monster AMD card I mentioned is meant for 4K gaming. I would like to see a console try.
Plus all the other things, like surfing the net with a wireless mouse and keyboard from your couch, the ability to access every streaming service and video site, and not just the ones Sony and MS approved. You don't have to pay a subscription fee just to play online. You have access to metric f**ktons of other software. You can read books on it, listen to whatever music, in whatever format you want, and watch movies with no restrictions. Or you could use it to make your own games.
Consoles are meant for one thing, and one thing only. PC's are general purpose machines that can do whatever you want them to do, including beating the consoles at their own game. |

Basically, if you want to buy a console, wait until the end of its life cycle and buy all the exclusives for literally peanuts and you will have a treasure trove of exclusive games. |

I'm a fan of physical stuff. Buying a game, opening the box, reading the manual, loading the CD, displaying the physical goods and placing them so they can be seen and admired and stuff. Lots of fond memories there.
Digital is the future though, can't fight that. It's a damn shame. I spend some time each month on cragslist, ebay, and local thrift / pawn shops trying to find old (in some cases, a year old is old enough to not be carried by major retailers) game consoles / games / accessories, etc.

Here's my goal for a PC build.
A console will typically cost anywhere between $300 - $600 and last (until a new console is released. my NES still works fine, for example) for anywhere from 4 - 7 years.
Along those lines, I figure for highest cost and shortest longevity, a PC build for $600 that will last reliably for 4 years, playing games on, we'll say, medium graphics. I can't get it to work.

PC gaming is cool. It's also more time consuming, expensive, and generally a hassle to someone who would much rather just play the first-party games on consoles. For example if I decide to buy an Xbox One it's the only way I will be able to play Halo, which might appeal to me more than Legion. Speaking of that, I hear Halo 5 will be running at 60 FPS. How well is Legion expected to perform?
Nothing on Xbone will be running at 60 fps unless its 720p and has turd graphics.

Its not like PC's will degrade like fruits and consoles will keep performance.
Both will keep performance at the same levels.
But while consoles will have to conform to the same level of performance for 4 years, PC's will evolve.
So, if ever comes a point when your PC cant anymore play at max, downgrade its settings. It will be equal, if not better, than the games coming out for the console in 4 years. |

I'm aware PC's don't degrade like fruits, but it gets to the point where you don't want to play a few games on low settings at 20 fps anymore, and then you build a new PC or upgrade if you can.
In my case, I upgrade my video card. Within a year, I'll likely build a new PC. The build I highlighted has a budget of $600 and should be able to play most games at high fps on high to medium settings for about 4 years. Can that be done, or not?
