After watching Fanfest 2014 - DUST 514: Graphics you mentioned that immersion is the most important thing in graphics, so i have few suggestions / remainders:
- seeing your full body and legs when watching in the ground - bullet drop for Minmatar weapons? (only ballistic weapons) - dead bodies / vehicles don't magically disappear - vehicles in / out animations - actually seeing non equipped weapons / equipment / grenades on dropsuits (and not magically disappear after changing them)
immersion from EVE link - the same color, size and light-tensity sun as is from EVE Online on the same planet from both games - the sun is in the same position as is in EVE Online - use the same space background drop for sky box (with nebulae and stars) as in EVE Online. And in the same position (obviously this would only be visible at night, with no clouds and no intense fog etc.) - use the same color ground and atmosphere as is in the same planet from EVE Online - only show moons in sky if they are visable from the same planet in EVE Online
I support EVE Legion, but the message was very badly delivered...

I'd like to encourage people's thoughts on graphics, and what they feel "is a priority" so the Graphics guys can take a look. I agree with some of what you posted on here too - a big one for me is how the vehicles just disappear after they've been destroyed! Peeves me off :)
As for some of the EVE link things - I imagine it would get pretty difficult to implement this in real-time. For example, pulling custom lighting etc regarding the sun's location from EVE for every planet could be tricky. I'm talking out of my depth here but I don't think this would be an easy one!!

Hec's priority list on graphics: 1. Player stuff - Suits - Weapons - Vehicles (including MCC if it exists in Legion) - Drones (if implemented) (These are the stuff you will pay most attention to)
2. Surroundings - Sky - Walls, boxes, rocks hacking consoles and the like - Ground (wet surfaces should look wet and nearby fires should light everything nearby with orange)
3. Other - Moods (volcanoes in the background, dust / ash in the wind) - Dissolving vehicles and corpses
(Good gameplay is always the ultimate no.1 priority)
Vehicles could (read: should) dissolve slower than corpses so we can avoid cluttering the field with wrecks and corpses. This way vehicle wrecks could cause roadblocks and offer some shelter for infantry.

High Priority: Going through and fixing all of the color differences that the 1.8 dropsuits have (the marshmellow Caldari heavy suit for example). Giving us proper commando colors for the commando suits just like the amarr heavy.
High Priority: Sprint glitch needs to be fixed. This happens because there is a small half a second or full second delay after you "use" (press R1) an equipment. It's most obvious with the repair tool as the animation changes between holding the repair tool out in front of you while you're using it, to a resting animation where you're just carrying it. However the transition between these two animations has a significant delay in which pressing the sprint button causes you to sprint only as fast as your normal movement speed. This is because when you use an equipment you are unable to sprint and are restricted to your movement speed. Creating a fluid transiation between these two animations, or removing/minimizing the delay is necessary.
Semi-priority: Fixing melee animations to actually make it a viable thing to do in the game. I think the first person perspective is way off here, but it could be something to do with the hit detection or hit "arc". There's something about the first person perspective in this game that makes CQC fighting very difficult compared to other games. Nothing breaks immersion more than when you get right up in someone's face and yet you can't tell where they are because the perspective doesn't let you see the other player in the corner of your eye. It's a mechanic that has always been broken and shouldn't be broken.
Semi-priority: map design (not sure if this is art/graphics dev team). We need to get rid of the old unbalanced maps and sockets and replace them with new, better balanced maps. Getting these sockets into Dust for testing will help us help you. I know part of that is designing the structures and stuff though. That redesign of the bridge with the lower structure underneath is what I'm talking about. The ladders and layers in the map to prevent everything being flat.
Low-priority: HEAVY WEAPONS. I know these require tons of work. I know these require tons of testing. But gosh dangit we've had the same heavy weapons since I started playing in the freaking cllosed beta. CLOSED BETA. That video confirms a plasma thrower when he mentioned there would be a flame type weapon, but not using flames...and the Amarr heavy weapon is obviously AV, so Gallente would be plasma...Let's just hope we see them before Legion.
Non-priority: Making rocks look pretty. Making the background look pretty. Working on new projects when there are game breaking glitches still affecting the majority of the playerbase.
I agree that immersion is a very important factor, but let me remind you of the absolute disaster the injector glitch was. Sure, ragdoll bodies far away from the point of death might be a cool feature and create immersion, but not if you can clearly see the person you're supposed to revive, yet you have to stab the ground in a random place for them to actually get up.
Creating a pretty backdrop, and realistic rocks might be immersive, but only if the CORE MECHANICS, the balance, and the gameplay don't already break the immersion.

I agree that leaving wrecks from all vehicles is a good thing - LAV's, HAV's and DS. Yes and please.
I like the idea of the nebula in the sky, but the moons thing - meh. What if the moon is on the other side. A little bit much I think.
Seeing the other weapons would be cool, though it is not a big deal to me.
Seeing your legs? Yes big time! This is not aesthetic, it is functional. We need to see where we are standing - I'm tired of falling when on a ledge because I wasn't sure where I was. |

Gun game 1) They could ask the EP for Valkyrie for pointers. He helped create Mirrors Egde after all. 2) realistic physics for weapons would be nice, yes 3) Fully agree 4) could be nice 5) nah, other things are more important
Immersion to EVE 1) Fully agree. At minimum the sun should have the relative color and size. 2) nah, who would tell the difference. However, I do agree that if the district is on the dark side, it should be a night map 3) could be cool. The problem is it would probably result in boring skyboxes. 4) atmosphere is a must, and I think they plan to do that. Ground color... Can you tell the ground color from orbit. You must have better eyes than me. 5) goes together with the skybox point. Who would tell right from wrong?

A lot of the data required for the EVE link stuff is already in the EVE show info API. It should actually be pretty easy, though it could get more complicated depending on how in-depth the graphics guys want to go with it.
Planets in EVE don't orbit, and ever since orbital bombardment became a thing, also don't rotate. So there's that. |

I was going to say that vehicles need a bit more pizazz when being destroyed and there needs to be a lot more animations in regards to vehicles. Also since they added dynamic shadows and lighting to the game I think you should be able to pull off those really dark maps and give us flashlights. |

This reminds me. You have to update the camera when you die. That wiggle and fall to the right doesn't represent what happening to your character at all. I don't want anything fancy, but I want the camera to follow where my ragdoll is not only because it looks better, but because it helps the player know where the medic needs to pick him up. I would also let the player decide if he wants to see his killer screen as it obstructs the view.
Also there's a visual bug that occurs sometimes where you see your own body running in front of you when you die. |

I would say though that more animations / more realism is always welcome. Things like sidearms visible on the mercs side or back or something would be cool.
I would also say that mechanics and balance are more important than added on graphical bits. |

My suggestions in addition to those of the OP:
We should be able to make foxholes with Remote Explosives, Mines, Grenades, and the Mass Driver.
Include weather effects (thunder storms, floods, or sandstorms even).
Make every racial MMC unique. For example, the Minmatar could perhaps use a pod to come down instead of the Inertia Dampener.
Make static meshes interact with the environment and with us (I hate hacking an objective and the screen stays static).
Animals, birds, and flock in certain specific maps (jungles and such to liven up the place. It also gives the EvE Universe a sense of self).
Depending on your suit choice that'll define your HUD (it also provides a sense of belonging and uniqueness to a certain race)
Immersive health visuals[?]
Map Ideas:
Harbors, ships (No, not space ships, but sea ships)[?]
Full-fledged night maps[?]

Gameplay is higher priority Looks good enough already. There are Devs dedicated to Art, Audio, Community, etc. Improved visuals don't have to come at a cost to improved gameplay.
Hello, I just watched one of the lesser watched fanfest videos that the CCP shanghai devs did about graphics in legion. The stuff you guys are doing is actually already looking really quite nice. It has come on leaps and bounds from the DUST PS3 graphics.
Right now I would say weapon FX would be a great area to improve. Weapon tracers, enemies getting melted by plasma, scorched by laser beams etc... Explosions and other ordnance like orbital strikes could be beefed up. Make it feel bigger and more brutal than 'normal' war FPS games. This is new eden, this is the future! Think BIG!
Also one last thing, shield FX. Dropsuit shields, vehicle shields - it would be cool if you guys could experiment with shield hit designs. You know, take damage to the shields and you see visible pings and distortions from the shield maybe?
Just wanted to say again, the stuff you guys have already shown for legion looks great. I LOVE the idea of fog so thick that it totally changes the pace of play. Going from clear visibility down to being able to see only meters in front of you would be a really cool and unique mechanic.
Keep up the good work! Legion at least will look spectacular. |

Things I would like to see graphically:
-Racial and suit specific HUDs, because lets face it, Logistics and Assault would have their HUDs tailored to their needs and each race would put their own style on it. -Rendering of our feet. -Range and altitude indication on passive scanner, -Cracking of screen when armor reaches different percentages of damage (not in center of screen and not severe enough to obstruct view), -Vehicle entry/exit animations. -Visible damage to armor of dropsuits, vehicles and installations (again at percentages). -Different models for all dropsuit roles rather than just color palettes, color palettes should be reserved for different suits within the same role. Logistics should not just be yellow assault, etc. -Weapons, equipment, and modules displayed on dropsuit, also maybe be able to display empty slots as well (i.e. sockets that the modules plug into) -Prone "stance" and advanced movement mechanics with applicable animations (vaulting over a railing, slide to couch, jumping up and grabbing onto overhead ledge, etc.). -Wrecks that don't disappear after 3 seconds, but instead get further damaged and destroyed. -More dynamic lighting mechanics regarding shields and gunfire (for example a laser down a hallway should apply radiant lighting effects to the hallway) -Reflective surfaces. -Null cannons cause a slight tremor around them when they fire within a certain range. -Flux effects also apply momentary static to HUD (again not enough to be disruptive to gameplay). -Conditional spawning animations (climbing out of CRU/MCRU, warping in through uplink, HALO [high altitude low orbit] insertions, etc.) -In game MCC destruction and crash animations from character perspective. -Seat change animations in vehicles.
Just some ideas...had more but I'm tired so I will come back and add them later if I remember them. |

Well you have a location for the sun in a map. All you have to do is define where that location would be procedurally via a program that gives you the district location, the planets static location (cause planets don't actually move around the sun), and the suns location in space. Figuring out at what angle the sun would arc across the sky would be pretty simple, and then change the position of the sun based on time of day GMT, given a random variance of the planets base rotation speed.
Come on man. Put the space back in space game. Like this guy did -> http://en.spaceengine.org/

I would suggest a number of considerations be made from and immersive point of view.
1.) During the character creation screen expose players to a short explanation of the racial groups as well as a brief almost news piece like report displaying the factions soldiers and assets.
E.G- I go to create a new character I select the Faction and a small summary of the factions is read out to me.
"The Amarr Empire is a vast Theocratical Empire that spans......."
"The Minmatar Republic is a cesspit of scum and villainy...."
While this is being read out to new players underneath a Scope Report coupled with intermissions of Security camera footage is being played displaying the Factions Soldiers and assets at work.
For example you might see Amarrian soldiers securing the area, one moving over to censor the camera drone, another from security footage of Amarrian soldiers drilling on board and MCC on in prayer, and finally a fleet of Dropships and Tanks moving across an open desert to a hill on which a battle is clearly being fought.
Consequently players get to see the assets and gather an opinion based on the style of each factional group
2.) Vehicle Wrecks
When and HAV or vehicle goes up in flames perhaps the vehicles flaming hull remains as a static piece of solid cover.
3.) Adjustments to the Neocom main menu.
This is perhaps my most passionate issue. Currently accessing the Neocom feels bland and unappealing. However we are using technology from a hyper advanced time period.
Surely as a mercenary we would be attuned with Scope or some other more clandestine organisation, and have updates of current events presented too use in almost news like fashion with updates displayed at the bottom of the screen denoting FW systems that have switched control, PC districts that have flipped, and current lore events.
Not only this but I feel like the process of selecting contracts feels contrived and boring. Would we not as mercenaries make use of a 3rd party group to find our contracts for us, to sign on to so as to find contracts and hire on allies? I would make the main contract selection screen feel like accessing a professional mercenary computer programme with a unique aesthetic.
Finally the ability to customise the layout of our main menu by being able to pin applications from our side bars (top bars, etc) so as to lay out our own Neocom units.... I mean everyone personalised their Smart Phone layouts....... wouldn't we New Edenites be able to do this too?

Each star should have codes which indicate colour, intensity, and size. Each planet should have an attribute for distance from the sun. A simple formula can take star size and distance to the planet and calculate the diameter of the star in the sky over the battlefield.
The Star in the sky (light source) should be an object with the size, colour, and brightness set by attributes in a table on Tranquillity.
I agree with the original poster that this would help immensely with immersion. But it is one of those systems that should be setup early, rather than attempting to retrofit it in later.

I would like to point out one major thing about the whole "graphics" situation. Too often in PC games do graphics actually negatively affect game play. Let me explain.
When developers make a game that allows for super minimal settings in terms of shades/grass and whatever, it creates an environment where people turn off all the effects just so they get an edge on the people who are using the games graphics to its fullest.
This really hits the people who did put money into their rigs because they're essentially paying extra to get a disadvantage.
So point is that, regardless of what the community wants in terms of graphics, its important that the team responsible for them set either certain standards, OR simply make it so that lowering the graphics doesn't make it any easier to spot people through smoke effects/grass ect.......
Im no expert at this sort of stuff but I do know how a lot of games play out on PC. Try playing War Thunder Ground Forces. The people who set their settings to max see a beautiful landscape full of immersive elements. The people who set their settings to minimum in terms of dust particle effects/shadowing/foliage essentially get the surface of mars and can see enemy tanks cresting the ridge way before the opposite fellow would.
So all in all im basically saying, be wary with graphics on PC. Its more then just looks now, its gameplay balance too. That's what happens when you go from consoles (where everyone has universal hardware) and go to PC where people are all over the place in terms of specs.

@ Dev,
I don't like how ships just disappear either. I would love to see massive fleets in the sky over our heads while playing that create an immersion that a full scale battle is occurring based on the mission. Just the entire environment needs to come alive which would allow the players to feel they are in a massive battle. So rendering distances for terrain, objects, lighting effects, and particle effects can just be cranked on a larger scale for the PC platform. SO does that mean they are streamed with the UR3 Engine? So have scripted ships in the air that make the player immersed. It works really well in FPS on the PC. I will use Titan Fall as example for concept in terms of the battleships environment in the sky.
This is an issue we Capsuleers also have also asked for above certain planets that would make space seem more alive such as trading routes, space stations, etc. Kind of like Coruscant or X3 in space or on the ground but with total war going on based on the mission for each team in PvP or PvE for your design for the game.
Another suggestion - new icons for the forums!!!
Avatars- textures rock on the PC.

Yeah, it can be frustrating. I have only played War Thunder on PS 4 but it is kind of disheartening to realize that, especially in arcade mode, you really are gimped if you just want to play a nice looking game. Don't know if there is a way to turn off the foliage for PS 4 though.
Players have been changing settings in Dust 514 to try to get better framerate, etc. for a while now. That players will continue to do anything to get an advantage is definitely one of the things that won't change with the platform. |

Frame rate is one thing, actual visual differences are another. Being able to toggle settings that allow you to see others is silly. That's the difference between graphics (visuals) and gameplay (FPS). After you go beyond 60 FPS theres hardly a difference in gameplay, and the difference in gameplay between 30 and 60 really isn't that big to begin with either. However, what does make a big difference is the graphics of competitive games. If people want to turn down their settings so that their computer can run a game, then they should be able to do it.
But if people want to turn down certain aspects of the game (ie: foliage) so that they can achieve a visual edge over the competition, then they shouldn't be able to do that successfully.
Turning down graphic settings should do nothing more then let a computer run more smoothly at the cost of looks. So things like grass and shrubs should still render. But they look like pixelated garbage as a cost. This way people who turn down their settings will get their PC performance up. But also not get an advantage over those who do max out their settings.
Its a tricky balance, and I know I harped a lot on foliage specifically, but that really is one of the biggest problems with games like that. Other problems involve things like smoke/blast effects. Shadowing. ect ect........
All im trying to say really is that this game should have minimum system requirements that are obtainable but not to the point where the developers have to sacrifice gameplay balance to allow the few with lower end PC's in. Basically medium end PC's that have the ability to have minimum shadowing effects and detail. But meh...... like I said. Im not an expert.

Nice flashy graphics are nice, but be careful not to overdo crazy effects and lighting to the point where you can hardly see what's happening nearby (Mass Effect 3, i'm looking at you.)
One thing that is very important to graphics and atmosphere is the sound and music. Sound is very often overlooked or thought of as secondary, but the sound and music need to match the emotions the graphics give off and visa versa. The Starmap is one of the better examples of this integration.
As far as graphics goes: -Perhaps most importantly environments that make sense
-the star map should be sleek, smooth, and pleasing to browse through
-orbital strikes should invoke more fear and awe. How DUST OBs are now is a great template (namely the sound), just make them more menacing
-Constantly firing a weapon should give more feedback about how hot the weapon is at that moment. More vapor, maybe a blur effect, ect. Perhaps on all weapons, but especially weapons that have heat as a mechanic.
-Gore and mutilation would be useful tools to give DUST a more gritty feel, but don't overdo it. I don't want ultraviolence, but I don't expect a body to still be in tact after a shot to the face from a 150mm railgun ^Different weapons should leave relatively unique traces on the victim's corpse. Nothing amazingly detailed or precise, but something that is distinguishable. Scorch marks from plasma weapons, holes from assault/combat rifles and shotguns, red streaks and holes from laser weapons that give the impression of the armor melting, ect. This could add a neat gameplay element of stumbling on a teammate's corpse and determining the weapon used so you can prepare specifically for that encounter in the area.
-Installation maps can have different lightings for different rooms
-This one is personal preference, but having a subtle aura of fear and horror everywhere would be really neat. I don't mean jump scares, but having things here and there that give off a feeling of unease would make this game stand out quite a bit. Gritty is great and all, but also remember that, in the lore, many mercenaries hear voices or see horrific visions when they die, they have implants that we don't understand the full implications of. Perhaps a small % of the times you die you see a subtle vision overlaps on the screen or hear whispers or something, even things as simple as how drones move around and behave. Little things like that scattered throughout the gameplay experience can go a long way to create atmosphere. |

I don't think toning down the blood will help when the game will be directly tied to a world as infamous as New Eden. Sure the lack of blood will allow the kiddies to play the game without being bombarded by visual trauma, but that's not going to protect the kiddies from the likes of those who reside in this world. We have diabolical trolls, cold and calculated egomaniacs, and scheming scammers just to name a few. Then there is the fact that this is a shooter where you are shooting other people in the face with a gun and where the meta gaming is most rampant. This is not exactly the kind of atmosphere you would want your kid to be exposed to... yet.
In other words, even with the blood and gore removed, I wouldn't want an elementary kid playing this game unless I know for a fact that kid already has a full understanding of the fine line between video games and reality.
