Dust 514 is a name that doesn't give an immediate connection to the EVE universe 2. CCP want to use a consistent product naming convention (EVE Online, EVE Valkyrie, EVE Legion) 3. Dust 514 has some bad publicity attached to it, and so losing the name could be likened to a fresh start

One interesting speculation I've heard is that a PC port could be integrated more into the EVE client to make it easier to balance/be meaningful for New Eden without massive issues. And that it could even be the F2P aspect of that game, with F2P players having access to the DUST gameplay, Character Slots and Skill Queues (on either PS3 or PC), and subscribers having access to both Skil Queues, Gameplay and Character Slots. I hope it's this, as I think that would be a definite shot in the arm for both DUST and EVE.

They could have been developing parallel code all this time, or been working on it for a few months as a skunkworks... particularly given that Unreal is a cross-platform technology and so is fairly readily adaptable/port-able. I remember when Apple moved to Intel-based chips, they revealed an instant non-Power PC chip OS X version that was feature-for-feature identical and it turned out that they had been developing the "Intel" version of OSX internally from the very first version onward. Of course, that would imply Hilmar has the same savvy as Jobs -- which is questionable.

I mean they just shut down WoD because it was unsustainable (don't believe this crap about it not being up to their standards - they just ran out of money), and they don't have the staff or resources to do much with Dust (hell, they don't even test their new builds internally). Not that another game is impossible, but given that Dust is not a success and - as an unreleased product - Valkyrie is not earning anything, can CCP really afford the gamble of a completely new project on top?

They realized that the way people were treating New Eden as an alternate life was a huge asset that they need to expand on. The idea is to enrich that experience by adding new games that interact with that alternate universe. Not only do they get new players, but it makes the experience deeper for the players they already have. It's basically a switch from selling a game to selling an experience. if they pull it off successfully then other game developers will have a hard time competing with the New Eden games, because they'll be fundamentally different. It's like I've been saying for ages now, Dust isn't meant to compete with Call of Duty. The selling point of this game is the connection to the New Eden universe and the results of your matches meaning something more than stroking your epeen (which people get bored of quickly). They haven't delivered on that part yet really, but they're getting there. Once they do, comparing Dust and a traditional shooter would be like comparing Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls Online (or any single player rpg vs an MMO). Both are good games, but they offer fundamentally different experiences and aren't in competition with each other. WOD wasn't a New Eden game and was a distraction from the plan. It also hadn't shown much progress in a long time. Also, that "loss" was simply a recognition that there wasn't any value in the product the WOD team had developed. It wasn't that their income was lower than their expenses, just that the things they owned were less valuable than they had thought. They still have cash flow.

So they will merge dust and legion in the rebranding, and what will come out, will be dust but complete. 3) A new project could work, but then if that's the case then the layoff in Atlanta are a bit sad, when they could of moved them to other things. But I guess we will know for sure in a week. either they will announce, or they won't. and that will give us at least the answer to if dust is being rebranded.

There's two main references which I think support this. The first is the actual origin of the word legion: "For most of the Roman Imperial period, the legions were a part of the Imperial army and formed its elite heavy infantry, recruited exclusively from Roman citizens." It's pretty self explanatory how that relates to Dust. The second reference comes from one of the most famous uses of the word Legion: "My name is Legion, for we are many." (Mark 5:9) The story is basically that of a man possessed by many demons (a legion - reference to the roman army). After pleading with Jesus, he allowed them to leave the body of the man and take over a nearby heard of pigs (2000 of them). They then all ran into the the nearby sea and drowned. Just seems to strike some similar ideas and themes of the clones. Also, now for the real stretch. In Mark *5:14*, the herdsman go to the nearby city and spread the word as to what happened to the pigs, and the people subsequently see that the man previously possessed had been cured. Not too much significance there, but when I saw "514" while looking all this up, I just couldn't not mention it. Then again, who knows, it could really be anything.
