Hey guys,
As some of you may already be aware from the press release on www.ccpgames.com, the World of Darkness MMO project has been cancelled, effective today, April 14, 2014.
While this is a sad moment for those affected, this puts us in a far stronger position to devote more time and resources to the EVE Universe and our projects therein.
You can read the full press release on our website here, and if you want to discuss it, please do so in this thread to keep discussion focused.
We'll also be answering questions here as and when we can, so please feel free to ask if you have any queries.
Thanks.

Sucks to hear for those who lost their jobs, although it's a sad reality of the video game industry that this happens on a regular basis.
Do we know how many of the remaining Atlanta team will be working on Dust?

Will there be a Kickstarter to restart the WOD online project at a future date? Or will the rights be "sold" to other parties? |

No. CCP believes that Kickstarter / crowdfunding is best for starting projects and not finishing them - so it didn't feel like the right path to take.

If this is not handled correct their could be significant backlash from the wider communty. This is a sad day for gaming

This either bodes really well for Dust, or really badly.
Best of luck to all those developers/artists/programmers/etc who are out on the market. A lot of downsizing has been going on as of late in the games industry.

Finally! Good move CCP.
It always seemed to me that EVE's Incarna disaster and Dust's missing features (persistent Warbarge?, Missing Vehicles, Game Types, and Assets, as well as general anemic performance) were directly and indirectly based on an over-reach to unify WoD environment design (always quite stunning and requiring nothing but the best in video performance) across all of CCP's properties.
Clearly the scale of the project was too large to deliver in a reasonable time. Further more, It was never going to work and support "reasonable computers" (non-bleeding edge PC's and console platforms), where the bulk of your customers are.
Godspeed, and good luck!.
CCP is (finally) steering off that lee shore.

It's certainly unfortunate to the people who lost their jobs but I can't help but feel its a good move on CCP's part to refocus on New Eden as a whole. Here's to the continued expansion of Valkyrie, Dust, and the EVE universe.

There could be a retry in the future, If CCP can make Dust and Valkyrie work for a larger playerbase, there might be enough income. With Dust becoming more and more accessible (via PvE and maybe some other RPG-like features) and EVE integrated.
The answer to your complaint is PvE. Always.

So, is it safe to assume that WOD would be the multi-million dollar assets that CCP "derecognized" this last year?

In a way I'm kind of glad that CCP is narrowing it's focus on developing New Eden, and given what we heard at last year's fanfest I'm not too surprised. Strategically it's clearly the right thing to do. The goings on of New Eden is what gets CCP press, and the more deep / rich that world gets the more impact it can have.
All the same, it's kind of sad to see WoD die on the vine like this. Maybe they'll get a chance to do it further down the road when the New Eden collection of games is more well established and the company has grown some more. If anyone could do that MMO right, I think it would be CCP. |

I would imagine, it's been under development for a very long time. All the time spent on it is now worth nothing. |

I ask because there was quite a lot of gnashing of teeth a few weeks back about the "derecognition" possibly having to do with some part of DUST.
And the guy who blogged about it left nothing but ominous hints and complaints that he was under NDA until CCP announced it themselves.
If this is the big news, I must callously state that I'm a bit relieved... and that this news isn't that big of a surprise after all.

Not strictly true... We tried to blow up a statue cus ccp wanted to charge stupid prices for character customisations.
Done right (i.e. with an impact on the game at large) walking within eve environments I would find most interesting, be it against NPC's or part of exploration or shooting other players. The reason PVP was never part of the plan was that outside of a starship pod the capsuleer can be killed. But if you clone jump into a different type of clone when you go into your walking clone (with the implant like the dust clones have) theres the get out clause for that.
Anyone getting annoyed by reading of the above post should consider the following.
I don't care so neither should you :)
