CCP does a phenomenal job with the flight mechanics of spaceships.
However...
... CCP... your idea of how to fly an AIRCRAFT is ungodly screwed. The dropships need a complete redesign.
1) The dropship right now has a control scheme with several wasted buttons. For example, the "open and close bay doors"-ábutton... why does it not ALSO deploy my landing gear so I can actually LAND instead of having to to smash it into the ground or wait 15 seconds for the landing gear to drop?
- According to the control scheme map in the settings menu, the right d-pad button is used to pull up the assets deployment menu... why on God's green earth would I need to do that in the middle of flying around? Instead, howabout make that button transistion the ship from flight mode... to hover mode?
2) Speaking of flight vs hover mode, I cannot tell you how many times I have slammed my Gorgon or Viper into the side of some skyscraper (or even my own MCC) because I couldn't get the thrusters to stop making me go forward fast enough.
- So here is my fix for that... make two flight control systems. One for hover mode, the other for flight mode. And then put flight wings on the dang thing and make it a SVTOL type aircraft like a V22 Osprey... but with jets instead of propellors.
--Hover Mode: L1 and L2 are the throttle buttons (southpaw is R1/R2), they make it go up and down. Left and right stick are used like the controls on Anakin Skywalker's Pod Racer to make it go forward, backwards, turn, and strafe by manipulating the controller joysticks in whatever direction you want the ship to go.
--Flight Mode: L1 and L2 are the throttle buttons (southpaw is R1/R2), they make the ship go FORWARD ONLY faster or slower, and the (reverse this for southpaws of course) left stick makes the ship PITCH up, down, and ROLL left and right while the right stick makes the ship YAW left and right and the camera tilt up and down.
3) Give the pilot an ONBOARD WEAPON SYSTEM THAT FIRES DIRECTLY STRAIGHT OUT FROM THE BOW OF THE DROPSHIP!!! (THESE WEAPONS WILL NOT PIVOT, TRACK, ROTATE, SPIN, OR SEEK TO TRY AND HIT A TARGET. They will fire like the guns on the front of a fighter jet... straight at whatever the pilot points the nose of the aircraft.)
- Gallente Ship: TWO Hybrid Blasters and ONE Rail Gun. -Amarr Ship: TWO Short Ranged Masers and ONE Long Ranged Laser. -Minmatar Ship: TWO Autocannons and ONE Artillery Cannon. -Caldari Ship: TWO Hybrid Blasters and ONE Rocket Launcher. |

TL;DR - I cant fly dropships therefore it must be broken!
Get an assault dropship then you will actually have something to moan about (stupid camera angle)
The answer is "ForgeGun"... doesnt matter what the question is...

Just because you cant fly one does not mean they are "broken" it simply means you need practice and also flying your drop ship also greatly depends on what modules you have fitted. Remember more armor plates will slow you down, and also vipers and gorgons have an auto stabilization making them easier to fly, so if you want a real challenge fly an assault or standard drop ship. |

Yes, they are funny to watch crash.
I call them Lead Maple Leaves... they fly like a Maple Leaf made of lead floating on the breeze... and they are not fun to crash in... them things are expensive.

I don't need more practice, the fact of the matter is that the drop ship is designed like a space ship... NOT an inner atmospheric aircraft.
It is NOT a common sense design and it lends NO appreciable value to a battle.
It has a crappy control scheme and needs to be revamped to make it a more reliable asset instead of a liability.
Which would you rather have? A ship that flies like a brick and is the same old thing...
Or a ship that gives YOU the Pilot more control over how it flies and can fly FASTER than they do now, AND can perform a direct attack by itself without having to have gunners in the gun seats? |

I personally think that drop ships are fine i usually go 30+ on average in my assault drop ship and also using gunners on a standard drop ship is one of the best things you can do to support your team if you are coordinated, and also about the speed thing you need to adapt use afterburners now to get that better flight speed. Also run a squad and use that drop ship to drop infantry on letters to surprise the enemy. so in a nutshell drop ships are not broken or designed incorrectly its just a case of adapting and practicing.

The controls should be more directly. Right stick should control the angle and rotation, Left stick should only control the thrusters. You push the left stick fully forward -> Thrusters are turned fully backward -> you move forward You push the left stick halfway backwards -> thrusters are turned halfway backwards -> you move back and up at half speed each Left stick fully sidewards -> strafing/rolling at full speed etc.
Also should there be two flight modes that can be switched through via X. Hover flight: You can aim the front turret without affecting the vehicles rotation and angle (until you reach the edge of the aiming arc, then the vehicle adjusts itself), passenger doors are open they can shoot out, landing gear is out. Speed is limited Left stick sidewards -> strafing
Flight: front turret is fixed on the axis you-¦re pointing at, doors are closed, landing gear is in. Left stick sidewards -> Rolling
Also should there always be mini screens that shows the 1st person view if in 3rd person and vice versa. |

While I agree that Dropships need a lot of love in the HUD department (altitude indicators, ammunition counters, and a host of other features) the control scheme is supposed to be as it is. Dropships are designed to be more akin to the Lunar Lander than a Gunship / Helicopter.
Why? Because not every planet DUST will be set on will have an atmosphere to support 'winged' flight. Barren Planets are said to be devoid of an atmosphere. Meaning that there is no 'lift' to having wings. Lunar surfaces (a future hope) would also have no atmosphere.

1) When you hover really close to the ground, the ship will automatically drop to the ground (I know it works because it's a little annoying to try and restock ammo from a depot and hover).
- I do not want a toggleable hover mode. Hovering is the death of dropships and makes you an easy target to rails/AV (and having to toggle an escape along with defensive mods would be too difficult) and even in ADSs it take too long to get back up to speed. The best procedure is to orbit to maintain some velocity.
2) Don't crash into buildings? Just let go of the throttle when you see you're tipping and try and level out and drift away, once you're not touching it, tilt away from the building and fly away.
-Again, toggleable flight/hover will make things more complicated and take more time. Learn to keep moving and maneuver proficiently and you should be fine.
3) No, dropship are meant to be troop transport/ support. In theory (much less in practice I'm afraid), ADSs are meant to drop small squads and aid them from the air with turret fire. Your suggestions would make air-to-ground combat almost impossible without strafing or high angle orbiting (both of which are pretty difficult not only to do but do effectively) not to mention remove the customizability of dropships.
4) I agree. I'd also be nice to see the health of my passengers as well.
5) There was a thread about this a while ago and it was because people thought it'd be OP (imagine mass drivers or forges raining down from an unreachable hight). Personally, I don't see the problem with it, there'd be a max of 2 at a time per side, I'd be difficult aim, and the dropship and gunners are basically sitting ducks.

Eh, ya get used to it, but I do wish it had a hover mode, and there should definitely be some work done with the aiming mechanics of assault dropships.
And yeah it's definitely supposed to be more like a helicopter, I know this because I can get into a helicopter in battlefield 4 and at least the flight controls are almost exactly the same, I was weaving through skyscrapers like nobody's business

5) When I am inside someone else's dropship, and I have a suit gun in my hand... why AM I NOT ABLE TO SHOOT AT STUFF OUTSIDE THE GIGANTIC OPEN DOOR ON THE SIDE OF THE SHIP?!???!!!! I mean think aboutnit logically... I have a rifle... I see a bad guy outside trying to kill me and the ship I am riding... why do I have to be boots on the ground to shoot at him or her? Why can't I just aim and shoot? Assault Dropships are fine.
Just use those. Transporting is for scrubs.

Dropships in Dust rely solely on vectored thrust to stay in the air so technically there is no such thing as a flight more.
Additionally, VTOL jets pick up speed using vectored thrust to achieve horizontal flight, so the transition isn't instantaneous. So I must disagree with having two different modes that you toggle between.

Think of it as a lunar lander. It's a pure vector thrust craft with no aerodynamic wing or rotor. Flying will be very difficult and frustrating if you don't have the right mental model because the dropship won't respond how you expect it too.
Flight Physics
Now the engine swivel confuses pilots and leads them to believe they are flying an aerodynamic ship.
In reality the engine swivel's only purpose/effect is to keep the body of he ship mostly level while the engines are almost horizontal. Absent the swivel your ship would be deep nose down to achieve the same forward thrust and that would make navigation more difficult. It doesn't alter the flight physics at all. |

You can land in that 'tiny' intersection with a lot of practice.
You can have your gunners (or yourself in an Assault Dropship) shoot back at tanks.
High Speed Dogfights in the sky? You're moving into the realm of fighter craft. Dropships are designed based on something akin to the Blackhawk, which has 'some' combat capability, but it's primary purpose lies in transport and insertion with 'some' air support provided by the door gunners.
Really, it's only the UI and HUD that needs fixing. Dropships are actually very manoeuvrable when you get used to the non-helicopter style vector thrust controls. Myself and a few others have challenges that we do on empty matches to get a dropship in and out of tight spaces quickly and with minimal (preferably no) contact with structures, and 7 times out of 10, you can do it on your 2nd or 3rd pass.
