SGTFunyoun THEFIRST wrote:Ok, then if all ya'll think the things are such hot sauce, how about adding stuff to the HUD/UI and making the "open bay doors" button also open the landing gear... it'll still auto open when you hover stationary but this way you can open both with the push of a button and get landed and take off faster.
The HUD and UI for all vehicles could do with some love. That's a given.
The ability to deploy gear and/or open bay doors manually should also be in.
As to the rest, let it lie. Dropships are controllable with practice, I've seen some VERY impressive Dropship Piloting.

with something in mind yes for 1
for 2 I am not sure about it, hover steady must depend by pilot skills, so my proposal is to put aerial instruments like Attitude indicator, alt meter, etc.
about 3 - assault dropship gun rotating is ok. Practice a month every day and you shall be a pro
yes for 4 and 5

I don't see any issues with dropship controls. I just wish the turret on the ADS had total freedom of movement. I can get a dropship anywhere it can fit. Stack a Grims with as much armor as you can fit, fly around in it for a month, and you wont have a problem with the controls anymore.
I haven't failed 10,000 times, i've successfully found 10,000 ways that won't work.

I've piloted dozens of different ships with all sorts of different control schemes from a large assortment of games and I can easily say that dropships have one of the worst learning curves I've ever experienced, with horrid controls to match it.
There is a reason there are so few pilots, and it's not just the rail tank's fault, or AV for that matter, only seasoned pilots complain about those things, it's common for new pilots to complain about flight controls in video games, the most common form of death for them is their own fault, but with every death and every moment spent flying they get significantly better at not dying from a crash. Becoming a pilot in most games, is like learning to ride a bicycle, it's hard for most at first but with time, practice and some bruises, you'll be a pro in no time (metaphorically speaking), while the DS handles like a unicycle, except without training wheels to help or any form of instructions to give you an idea of how not to face-plant.
Many vets say the controls are fine and that it takes time getting use to it, but I find this to be a rather bias opinion since they would be the most to gain from the controls remaining the same, less pilots means fewer rivals and wouldn't have to relearn the flight controls they've grown accustom too. One of two things need to happen to deal with the unnecessary learning curve.
1.The implementation of a vehicle tutorial of some kind, preferably an interactive one that involves the player following guided instructions on how to pilot a DS, or the very least an instructional video on DS piloting.
2.A complete overhaul on the HUD, UI and controls, the current one hasn't been touched for ages, nothing has been added to the HUD after all the new content that's been added, DS has no features to support pilots, the controls intimidate any desire new or old players that show any interest in learning to be a pilot.
I believe something must be done to improve new user's experience dropships, and I feel the best people to provide proper solutions for this are DS vets with non-bias opinions about what can be done to improve the DS. |

I agree on the hover mode. We need a button that causes the dropship to auto-level and remain stationary at its current height. Also, the thrusters should not turn off when the pilot changes into a gunner seat. Note that I'm not in favor of changing the actual flight behaviour. I just want to be able to tell my dropship to stop changing position while I'm manning the side turret (for whatever reason) or just hiding somewhere.
However, the rest of your post shows how uninformed you are. Try assault dropships before you post further. ADS already have front-mounted guns. Though it's an extreme oversight that the ADS is the specialized version, instead of the transport version. How many players will be able to make use of ADS, compared to ordinary dropships? |

SGTFunyoun THEFIRST wrote:CCP does a phenomenal job with the flight mechanics of spaceships.
However...
... CCP... your idea of how to fly an AIRCRAFT is ungodly screwed. The dropships need a complete redesign.
1) The dropship right now has a control scheme with several wasted buttons. For example, the "open and close bay doors"-ábutton... why does it not ALSO deploy my landing gear so I can actually LAND instead of having to to smash it into the ground or wait 15 seconds for the landing gear to drop?
- According to the control scheme map in the settings menu, the right d-pad button is used to pull up the assets deployment menu... why on God's green earth would I need to do that in the middle of flying around? Instead, howabout make that button transistion the ship from flight mode... to hover mode?
2) Speaking of flight vs hover mode, I cannot tell you how many times I have slammed my Gorgon or Viper into the side of some skyscraper (or even my own MCC) because I couldn't get the thrusters to stop making me go forward fast enough.
- So here is my fix for that... make two flight control systems. One for hover mode, the other for flight mode. And then put flight wings on the dang thing and make it a SVTOL type aircraft like a V22 Osprey... but with jets instead of propellors.
--Hover Mode: L1 and L2 are the throttle buttons (southpaw is R1/R2), they make it go up and down. Left and right stick are used like the controls on Anakin Skywalker's Pod Racer to make it go forward, backwards, turn, and strafe by manipulating the controller joysticks in whatever direction you want the ship to go.
--Flight Mode: L1 and L2 are the throttle buttons (southpaw is R1/R2), they make the ship go FORWARD ONLY faster or slower, and the (reverse this for southpaws of course) left stick makes the ship PITCH up, down, and ROLL left and right while the right stick makes the ship YAW left and right and the camera tilt up and down.
3) Give the pilot an ONBOARD WEAPON SYSTEM THAT FIRES DIRECTLY STRAIGHT OUT FROM THE BOW OF THE DROPSHIP!!! (THESE WEAPONS WILL NOT PIVOT, TRACK, ROTATE, SPIN, OR SEEK TO TRY AND HIT A TARGET. They will fire like the guns on the front of a fighter jet... straight at whatever the pilot points the nose of the aircraft.)
- Gallente Ship: TWO Hybrid Blasters and ONE Rail Gun. -Amarr Ship: TWO Short Ranged Masers and ONE Long Ranged Laser. -Minmatar Ship: TWO Autocannons and ONE Artillery Cannon. -Caldari Ship: TWO Hybrid Blasters and ONE Rocket Launcher.
4) The pilot has no idea how much ammo his onboard guns have unless he lands, switches seats, and manually checks. How hard is it to program in a small readout on that little picture of the ship that tells me how many rounds my two side guns have left in them?
5) When I am inside someone else's dropship, and I have a suit gun in my hand... why AM I NOT ABLE TO SHOOT AT STUFF OUTSIDE THE GIGANTIC OPEN DOOR ON THE SIDE OF THE SHIP?!???!!!! I mean think aboutnit logically... I have a rifle... I see a bad guy outside trying to kill me and the ship I am riding... why do I have to be boots on the ground to shoot at him or her? Why can't I just aim and shoot?
I only read 3 and 4 and the rest is not interesting.
3 For the last time, the dropship is not a heavy aircraft designed for heavy damage output and offense.
Its assault capability is very light, this is mainly for anti infantry.
Again I cite that the assault dropship is not intended for anti-armour. The main role is weakening infantry and killing the occasional sniper.
I have flown in dust for nearly 2 years now. Anything with the name 'dropship' in it is for exactly that, dropping troopers into wherever they may be required and laying down light support fire. You may have seen me in game or in ideos using it as anti everything, thats because a lack of content (eg fighters and heavy gunships) forces me to use it against its intended role, consequently leading to many unnecessary crashes or deaths. In all the time that I have used dropships or assault dropships AS dropships, I rarely get shotdown, why? Because I am doing what it is intended for.

The main problem for me is that Assault Dropships cost 10 times as much as a militia tank, and the tank can shoot me down from the other side of the map in 2 shots if he catches me without a hardener. A 40k isk vehicle should not kill 400k isk vehicle that effortlessly. |
