It is to powerful. All this game is now is just "find the red dot on your radar". Everyone pretty much always knows where everyone else is. It's boring. And the victory always goes to the the team with the fewest noobs on their side, who don't understand how active scanners will get them kill very quickly.
The active scanner is killing the fittings variety in this game. If you're not constantly running, AT LEAST, a suit that is below 36 dB odds are you're going to get rolled, or at the very least go ISK negative for the match, unless you are running in fittings that are 20k ISK or less.
So, outside of running junk std fitting, pretty much your only other option is to dampen. Well what's wrong with that you say. Well I'm glad you asked:
In order to get a medium suit to beat the adv scanner requires complex skills and a complex mod, which will put a med suit at 33.75 dB. So, first off, we are asking noobs to, before they do anything else skill wise, skill dampening to Lv5 and imediately start using complex dampeners on ever suit they fit if they don't want to keep getting rolled. But it doesn't stop there. In order, to counter the active one must give up vital a vital low slot, thus drastically decreasing ones overal ability to survive. On the other hand the active scanner user must make no such sacrifices. With a minamal skill investment (Lv3 to get the adv scanner) you are easily on your way. All you have to give up to use the AS is one equipment slot. Easy enough if your a logi, you won't even notice. If you are an assault, so you'll have to look for a nanohive in order to rearm in the field - no big deal.
Scanners have no real draw back for the user. And beat the scanner costs you the abillity to survive well. And now beating the scanner is even worse.
So there you have it scanner 514.

The question is...is it OP or is your versatility UP?
Active scanners can be a pain but I don't use dampeners. They don't bother me too much because I think like this: No matter what the enemy throws at me, I can throw one harder back him.

I should just let this thread die, but I'm a sucker for punishment I guess.
Remember before scanners? If anyone saw anyone they lit up on the map. Isn't squad only intel much nicer?
Also all a new bro has to do is join a squad, chances are someone in it is scanning for the enemy team. Or failing that fight fire with fire and use one themselves.

The kind of thing amuses me when you're whole team is getting rolled by a squad or two of full proto with scanners, because they know where your entire team is.
I do just fine on my own in my radar tanked scout. Shooting people in the back all day long whistling dixie while I play. I am just trying to point out that fact that noobs and most people who aren't dampening are getting ROFL stomped in pubs and this is the exact reason why. And it is killing variety/fun factor in this game.

Hopefully soon. Lolscanner spam is rediculous. It dosent make sence to be able to see 95% of your enemys on radar at all times, Make it so you show up when you use it Make it so it scans for 5 seconds and you have to put the person in the scanner cone for 4 seconds to get them to show up Scanned people only show up for 3-5 seconds Increase recharge time to 30-45 seconds |

If you had a Caldari medium suit you would be able to dampen without sacrificing so much eHP. |

Here's a shocker, why don't you scan them right back?
A basic scanner works just as well as proto one, and doesn't cost a lot of SP.
Just because you read "you have been scanned" doesn't mean everybody knows where you are, or even that they're specifically targeting you.
As far as know the effect is more psychological, from a perceived message of doom. Stop getting psyched out.

I think they should increase the CPU/PG costs on all scanners drastically, and then give an inherent CPU/PG reduction for scanners for scouts. That way scouts get a role (scouting) and you see less of them on the field.
There still needs to be some fine tuning on the cooldown so that you avoid the "you've been scanned" spam... |

This is what happens when I start thinking this.
*YOU HAVE BEEN SCANNED*
"Ok, I got this. C'mere, Cupcake."
*Guy runs around corner. We have a small shoot out. I come out on top with only a third of my armor missing*
"Now to go link up wi-"
*Three of the guy's squad mates pop out from around the corner/direction i'm about to go in*
Every. Single. Time.
I'm cool with scanners though. I only use them when i'm in a squad and i've placed my up-links; it'd be hypocritical to rage at them.

What they need to do is make a hard counter to it that goes in the equipment slot like a jammer or a ghost signal generator.

Does anyone remember that the devblog that announced the active scanner said that the wielder of the active scanner would show up on the radar of anyone within the scanner's range?
If that was actually the case I believe we wouldn't be seeing the item being used quite as often.
That said, a complex profile dampener does work wonders against scanners. It's just not something you can realistically spec into until you have about half a year worth of skillpoints under your belt, so I'm mostly concerned for our newer players. |
