The complexity of all the fittings. I can tweak for a long time and create new unique fits. The gameplay was fun before the ttk being really low now it feels like nothing matters fitting wise(overstatement but close to truth. The diversity in this game is awesome. It will make me ride out the rough patches. P.S. More racial variants weapon and suit types please :)
Will my fit work?

Simply, what motivates you to play Dust? I'm addicted as hell. Even though 1.6 is enfuriating a best while using my main weapons Plasma Canon and HMG I still manage to play a couple of games. Then of course the november events are protostomptacular making it even harder to use these weapon due to bugs on the plasma canon and the hmg accuracy issues.
Dust is a great game hence the addiction.

I play about 1-2 matches a day (so 15-30 mins?)
I play dust because it entertains me. I run solo often so that means I'm mostly going against stacked teams, which contrary to others view on it I see it as fun due to being able to sneak around the killing fields and in turn kill players who feel relaxed due to their side having map control.
Another reason why it entertains me is because the rules change so much, its practically a whole new game every 6 months, which means my own careful play style is able to cope with the chaos quite well. The changes keeps you on your toes and more so than "balance" its more about how you adapt.
I also play because I expect dust to to keep on changing. Eventually I want my caldari themed sidearm ewar scout, make it happen CCP.

I still have boosters on from the last pack I bought. I play EVE so as long as I play it, I'll have a reason to play Dust over other shooters. Passive Sp is nice so I can take a break if I want, when newer content comes out I'll have some saved up for it. I have a lot of buddies now, and when this game gets ****** at least you're not alone.
Mostly I play for future potential, I can forgive bugs and bumps by the devs who pretty much built the game from scratch. I can appreciate how difficult that is, especially with the limited staff. Once I brought my hope down as to how long it would take to implement all the interactions this game promised for the past half decade I could seriously ask myself if it was worth to play now. I said yes. I don't compare this game to other shooters because it isn't other shooters, just like EVE isn't other MMOs.
All I ask from CCP is that they don't let this game die because of competition or the bumps. There really is something amazing in the works, and it's worth waiting for it to reach it's fullest potential.
Now give me a proper Gallente (or at least hybrid) sidearm.
The Ellecon's come from a long line of Gallente. Tarn chose Peace. Tallen chose war.

Dusts potential and the hope that pc will be controlled by eve pilots way more and we do merc work, mercs working for mercs is ridiculous even if theres isk profit.
I want to see eve pilots running the show and building surface infrastructure, I want to see them handing us contracts and the ability for us to gain standings with eve player corps.
Right now kain I believe pc is a complete joke. From the lag to the mechanics and carebear timers, I want timers set for how long a ship takes to jump, not a mummies boy arranged timer.
Next CCP will announce sovereignty is coming for us lol, that would the cherry on the cake for ridiculous but not so if a player joined an eve corp I believe as they would just become the property of x corp.
I hope you read that, tldr is for the weak minded.

The only thing keeping me on is how much work i've already put in. I'm really hoping it wasn't all for nothing, but truthfully Dust is a joke right now. I'm looking at the possibility of not capping my SP for the first time since starting because the game is no longer fun. Just like everyone else, I stick around for what could be. But if I start not capping and 1.7 flops like most of the other patches, I don't see much of a reason for me personally to stick around. And i'm not asking for rollover SP, i'm asking for a balanced game, with a reasonable TTK, not Space CoD. |

The games potential. However, the potency of this draw fades with every second the game doesn't get closer to that potential. An example of this is Dark Souls. The games depth, complexity and potential is high, along with it's learning curve. The game has done wonderfully with balance and updates (IMO) and still has potential to be even greater. It's frustrating to play and deeply rewarding. We'll definitely be seeing more of this with DS2. If Dust can live up to it's potential, provide fun and reasonably balanced gameplay it will (again, IMO) stand out in the pack of FPS games. That's incredible considering the graphics it's up against and the sheer size of player base of other FPS games. Hell, I still play Megaman X-2 for the SNES every couple of years. Why? because that game is fun! That's really the goal afterall. |

With all due respect fun is relative, people spot trains lol. My idea of fun with dust would make a casual player cry but bring a smile to the hardcore and eve players.
My ideas for pc for example would mean only hardcore, eve and dusters in the know about eve would even want to play pc and the casuals would do pubs or corp battles where nothing matters.
I don't know why I felt the urge to put that comment, don't ask lol,

I don't play anymore. It is just not fun playing on the same 5 maps all the time. I know where and when to aim and where and when to hide on every map. I even know if I am on the winning or loosing team by looking at the mini mapmap and counting snipers.
I am playing Warframe and I am actually happy now. New content every month 7 different types of battles not just 2. Better selection of weapons. A lot more variety in playing. match making actually works.
I still log into Dust every day to get my daily bonus. Maybe I will come back in a year or so and see what has happened. |

In all honesty, I LOVE/d dust! I am just sick of all the broken promises, broken mechanics, messing with things that should have NEVER been touched "drop ship view". What pisses me off more then anything...........Delivery ships. I have lost so many million $ ships cause they get crashed into the side of a building and dropped. Losing a mill+ just fks up the rest of your day.
I want nothing to do with a company I can't TRUST. "No bpo's are being removed from player accounts". To me, they are just liar's now.
I have almost 30mill sp. I have unlocked everything I wanted. There's nothing left for me in game. 1.7 the BIGGEST patch since release. LMAO Year and a half later 4 boring maps. I could give you a whole list of things that are wrong with dust but you already know them all. After the tenth I probably will never log in again.

1. Even though the "meaning" and "impact" is limited in its current state, to my knowledge, it is still more than other FPS
2. I like the skill tree and development aspect of the game
3. I like that I have not bought another game and don't have to keep getting a new FOTM game. I play and play and them pay a little then play and play then pay a little. It's not necessarily the costs associated with new games, its the hassle of jumping to FOTM. I like sticking with a game and going along for the ride, even if it is not the "best" ride.
4. My expectations are not as extreme as others and the evolution of the game is currently fine with me
5. I like feeling like I can have an impact within the game (read meta) and also in the actual development of the game

Very common problem, open up your ps3, take out screws and open disc drive, apply alcohol to a cotton bud stick and wipe the lens, the problem is caused by the disc shoving dust into the drive every time you put a disc in, check it out as its a certain kind of alcohol, rubbing alcohol i think? But check to make sure.

My hope that one day this game will be the FPS subdivision of EvE. Where our actions will actually have an impact on Highsec and Nullsec policies and politics. Where we can be feared as much from the ground as the goo babies in space. To be completely honest, the game itself doesn't motivate me in the slightest to play anymore. It's been like this since 1.6 dropped.
Only reason I ever get on is to talk and play with friends / corp mates.
So my answer is the people that play the game, motivate me to at least log on.

Motivates me to play?
Not sure really... Would I be completly out of line to say that I still believe that at least some of the things that have teased us will be implemented in the game?
Also enjoying the corp and the people in it.
...
BTW do you think we'll get a decent 1st person view for the dropships any time SoonTM?
I prefer not to think of the answers to such questions, maybe that is the key to enjoying this game? Not looking at how good the game could be but rather how fun it is to kill Proto suits with OHKs from plasma cannons! :)
But seriously though could you decouple the turret from the view in 1st person view for dropships? Would really make it a lot easier to enjoy the game if at least CCP Devs would say something YES/NO/MAYBE/EVENTUALLY and put up a list where they answer to ideas put up on the forums by the player base.

Beginning to wonder that myself
I guess I still play because I hope that 1.7 will give us a respec .. if not then all hope will be lost and I'll move on to a different game .. DUST 514 has had a whole year and their are just as many things missing and just as many problems now as there were in BETA ... progress is way too slow and without a respec I have little interest in continuing to put up with it .. life is too short to wait around for something to get good ...

Recent TTK actually made the gam more fun for me, since skll and map awareness plays a bigger role, and proto gear isn't an effectve crutch anymore.
Overall on my best days Dust is infriating. Even if I'm going 25/0 the game and the people in it **** me off until I'm red with anger and frustration. No other game does this to me. As a result I simply can't stomach playing this game for more than a couple hours a week. It's pretty common for me to refuse to touch Dust for a month, then only play a couple matches before I'm just done.
Only thing that motivates me anymore is substantial changes or new content. Dust and CCP have let me down in ways I can't even describe.
EDIT: Typing on a Vita sorry about the typos.

Easy answer.
The prospect of a quality MMOFPS that truly mattered based in a persistent environment with the history of EVE motivated me. I brought as many people as I could to enjoy the ride...but sadly, it appears it will take a significant amount of time for Dust to deliver on its promise. I don't play anymore (obviously, given the state of the game) but will be among the first to return when its a quality title with the variety, depth and quality we all anticipated.
Not a bitter vet, but i'll be back when we have 10 game modes, jets, all racial suits/wpns and EVE has a reason to care.

I've had some of the most intense edge of my seat moments in dust. Some worthy of being in a sci fi action film. I come back to play because few games do dropships and even fewer do them well. While we still have a way to go with dropships the epic moments I've had keep bringing me back for more.
The universe is also incredibly rich in interesting stories, every merc has had moments like mine, but with completely different equipment and play styles. Every battle is different and tactics change constantly, you can't just go into a game and expect it to play out the same way every time. Keeps mercs on their toes and pushes their skill in battle. Being a dedicated pilot has been a very hard road. I took a break lately because of my frustration. Mastering a skyshark is an art, like painting while riding a bull, sometimes you just want to give up. However flying is what i do in dust and i love it, no other game gives me the thrill i get when im flying my python in dust.
The main reason that I log on and keep my flying skills up is that I have a dream. Every role in dust has had its day in the sun, except the lonely skyshark. one golden day, maps will be vast and the terrain will be difficult to navigate. The dust bunnies will look to the skies asking for a better way, and I will be there to carry them above the carnage. I will be there to return faith to the dropship, to use it for its true intention and make glorious stories I can share. The day that my fellow mercs recognize the usefulness of a true pilot and recognize the hard work so many have struggled with during the uprising. The day when all the months of being blown out of the sky pay off, all the suffering to the hands of those who called dropships a waste of time or flying coffins becomes a thing of the past. The day when a squad of random blueberries jumps at the chance to get in my dropships and knows how to use it. So I log in and keep flying, keep training, for the day that us lucky few, we veteran pilots, can fully shine on that golden day. |

I joined dust because it was free around the time they were giving out codes in July 2012. but as of now, i have lost my motivation.
I ONLY get on to play with my corp/squad mates because i can't stand blueberries, and the fact that the same modes get boring.
I still love dust no doubt about it, but everyonce in awhile you need to take a one week break to get Motivated again.
But the fact that this is the only FPS i have played and stayed with, is something i guess.

SP, character development. But what motivates me to play on a given day.
I think a lot about dust throughout the day. Yet I typically end up only playing for an hour or so. Maybe just for one game. Before I play I get kinda hyped up, excited you know.
But
Here lately I get excited, then start reasoning it all out. What am I going to do, what fit, what game mode, ect. Thats when my will to play begins to decline. I start thinking about tanking, and get kinda bummed. It isn't as fun as it was when I started. As in, I don't get that thrill from it I used to. It feels empty.
So I play a game (From yesterday) and pull out my speed fit ultra glass cannon gunnlogi and rack up around 800 points off turrets right at the start. AV was light, kept to the corners, shot some infantry with my rail (always sweeeet). End of match, 5-0 over 1000 WP.
Next I take a long break, another beer, step out for a smoke, ****, then back to dust. In which I sit and ponder if I should play another game. I really really don't. But I think I might, so I say ok, one more.
Same thing in this match, kill turrets, kill infantry with my rails. Run from swarms, heal, approach from different angle, attack, repeat. 5-0 and over 1000 WP.
Both very good games.
Yet I am bored, and uninterested. For as much as I think about dust throughout the day ( checking forums, checking twitter, ect.) you would think I play all the time. But dust has grown stale.
I can recall, when I first started back in May, always capping out. I played 4 to 5 hours on the weekdays, and many more on the weekends. But over time, as my character and my skills improved, I grew disinterested.
I'm bored. It's the same thing, over and over and over.
As I browesed through the fourms, I come to understand dust and it's progress. There is soo much potential here, and honestly, I feel the game is very lacking. The fact that you can kinda consider this beta really puts me off.
When I first heard about dust 514, I thought holy ****, eve and dust connected. One being a shooter the other a sandbox mmo. So much potential.
Then I learn my Eve char, really doesn't interact with the dust bunnies. No P2P market, or a market between dust and eve. No way to support my dust char with my eve char.
Eve and Dust 514 might as well be separate games.
But in the beginning, I was excited. I saw a bright future ahead for the game. Then the months drag on, and progress has been slow. Patches were small, and never added "content" to the game. Bug fixes, improvements to aiming, blah blah blah. Since release to now, everything has been minor.
Your game, CCP is boring. It has been the same thing, every patch. 1.7 is a major Content update, so we shall see. But, again I'm tired of beta testing. The new patch will bring balance problems, bugs, blah blah blah, that will all require another month to fix. So the content, that I feel should have been part of the game from the start, will be many months down the road.
I'm really thinking about getting into a new game, but I haven't given up hope.
Btw, what motivates me to play, right at this moment, is PC. Which I might be late for!

I'm motivated to play by wanting to create content around the game. I enjoy making videos for Dust/EVE and want to make more videos of better quality. This includes making guides to help newer players, montage videos, comedy videos and soon, tournament videos.
Also motivated to help out friends I've made through both games. I run mostly Gallente FW matches these days to help out the friends I have there. I also like to just chill out sometimes and play with people I know.
Dust isn't really a game I can just sit down and play, I need goals or won't even be motivated to even turn my PS3 on.

I've just had a month off dust, i didnt play the triple sp event, and thats the 1st event i've just not bothered with
dust infuriates me lol .. mainly the matching. 2v16 is no fun, niether is being on a team of starter corps vs 2 stacked squads from well known corps, nor is it any fun being on the stacked team, hovering around the enemys redline waiting for a kill
Also, to many ohk weapons for my likeing, other fps'ers i just accept my deaths as "fair play" and laugh it off and manage to have fun
but in dust, 90% of deaths just feel cheap and pathetic
yet i still log in to check my passive sp
I just unlocked the caldari proto suit, so i've played for the past week or so trying that out, but the noveltys worn off already
I intend to grind up some sp to check out the new rifles in 1.7, even though i wont have much fun doing so lol
what motivates me to play? that sp grind \ unlocking new things \ lvl'n up my toon
gameplay, meh not so much

Playing in a suit that is underpowered and doing well makes me feel good about my skills in a lot of ways in this game. The lack of a kill cam is a godsend lately due to trends as well. Plus i like to take unique but not necessarily powerful weapons and use them effectively even if the people of the forums dictate that they are **** weapons (i.e the unloved plasma cannon).
I like to set goals to accomplish and this game gives you tons of them. Character development is much deeper than normal games where its not just you now have a better spell, have fun. It becomes it will take me this long and this many games to get X skill to a level where I feel comfortable then i can start working on this skill.
The game offers a lot that other games don't which will keep me playing for a long time. Take for example the battlefield series. I played battlefield 3 for over 700 hours. But the new one Ive played for a few days and maxed scout helicopters, maxed recon and dmrs, gotten everything i wanted in the game. Now what is there for me to achieve...nothing really. This game rewards you for the time you put into it. |

I never pay for a game/movie without a good story and the World of New Eden has plenty of lore to sink my teeth into.
Although DUST 514 is subpar in its current state, and yes people, this game is subpar, CCP's continuous push forward and ideas are what keeps me here.

Honestly, STFU. Gathering such information at this point in time with the game in the state that it is in is a waste of resources. You're goal should be attracting new players and retaining them, not caring about what a few vets think. We have our spot in the game for one reason, we've already been here long enough to not warrant going anywhere until a better game or console comes along that will separate us from DUST.

The people I play with as much as the fact Dust is a scifi combined arms FPS. THe only other online multiplayer FPS I spent a massive amount of time at was BF3 on hardcore mode. It was excellent but the lack of play meaning anything and no real customisation mean I was fairly bored by time Dust came around. Much as the TTK here has gone to the dogs recently, the game is still excellent fun. Yeh, I do get occasionally stomped because I like the challenge of not using weapons or suits above advanced in FW and pubs, but when I'm playing with a bunch of any of the chilled out friends I've made through Dust, it still is fun. I think to many people play to grind, rather than allowing the SP to be the cherry on the cake. The good part is chilling with mates, shooting, sneaking, blowing up stuff, driving, flying, etc.
Disclaimer: Beer and whiskey might have been occasionally used to enhance my Dust experience, so the above statement can be taken with a pinch of salt |

- My initial motivation was the potential of Dust 514. I was never impressed by its mechanics, gunplay or visuals, but what the game COULD be drove me to invest heavily in this game
- When that motivation waned, it was the skill system that kept me going. There was always ONE MORE THING I wanted to get in pursuit of the perfect Proto setup
- After hitting my peak in what i wanted, my only motivation was my fellow Corpies and the pursuit of PC we all participated in. Being the best of AU/NZ was the goal, and competing at a global level with my fellow soldiers was the reward.
However, all these motivations were lost when frustration came to a head. Dust 514 is not the game I have stuck around so long for to get. Even overlooking the vast amount of bugs that tamper with a fair competitive arena, the game falls short with very little options for players (not referring to the skill tree as that is still a work of art).
If I were to get motivated again, it would require Dust to become the game I hoped it would be back in mid 2012. |

I've been playing since closed beta in June 2012.
A few months ago I took some time off to play TLOU and GTAV which were awesome, but just recently I fired up Dust 514 on an impulse and am hooked again!
I wondered why I keep coming back to this game and have concluded that it's because:
1. The attachment to a legendary game world--EVE--and the continuous growth and bonding between the two games. 2. The opportunity to be a part of an amazing corp. 3. Great freakin' comms--both in battle and out. 4. Dynamic politics between players and corps facilitating the existence of a meta-game which continues to grow. 5. The depth of customization is lovely and rewarding. 6. PC makes my heart pound and will only get better and better.
The game is not perfect, but there is nothing like it in gaming today.

Hope I suppose. Or just that I haven't been able to use my computer for a few days. The game does enough things right to make me want to come back, but enough things wrong to drive me to insane frustration while playing. There may only be a few maps, but the modular design and the different lightings are solid. While the racial suit variety feels (and is) incomplete, the suits that do exist are racially distinct in most cases. I would say nice things about the weapons, but since the AR has been king for so long that quite a few of the other weapons may as well not exist for how often they get used. Collision detection still drives me mad (grenades bouncing off thin air, my legs freaking out trying to climb, etc). Prototype gear is out of balance with the rest of the game, and combined with the current state of ARs and TTK makes any meaningful fitting choices irrelevant. Why should I bother with an active setup, or any of the lesser used modules (speed, hacking, sig) when I die instantly anyways? I may as well run around in my Templar Sentinel BPO with double Templar pistols because it's cheap and doesn't die instantly, and when that's how I have to define enjoying the game, something is wrong.
Edit: Oh, and there is no metagame. Until they add meaningful conflict drivers, which PC isn't, then there will never be a flourishing metagame. |

Well a few things.
1. The repair tool. Not many FPS games have a medgun, and even fewer have a fun or rewarding way to heal people. The last game I played with a good medgun was Resistance 2's Pheonix. As most player have seen me getting 7k+ wp with the core focused, it's definitely my favorite equipment...still waiting for the fix in 1.7 to see allies health again.
2. Fittings. I love being able to have tons of different variants for suits and how versatality is actually a viable tactic in this game. There are so many options and most of them are balanced with each other (do more damage or have more health or have faster regen or have faster movement). The variety of suits and weapons also keeps things interesting. Sometimes I'll just randomly be thinking about a new fitting I want to try out during work, and it makes me want to jump into the game right after I get off.
3. Team Play and communication. When I join up with a few of my buddies in the game and start mowing down the competition it's so much better than doing that by yourself in a deathmatch. I've never communicated so much in a game before this, especially when just sitting outside of a match waiting for a battle. In games like CoD or Halo I've never sat with someone and discussed strategies about what suit I'm using, or about my recent findings with a certain fitting/weapon. Almost everyone I talk to is into the game just as much as I am and it's nice to know that I can completely nerd out to these people without having to explain what a scrambler rifle or flux grenade is.
4. Passive Skill Points. This is probably the most important one as it keeps things interesting. In most games you have to sit there and grind to get your next unlock...and once you get bored of the game it just sits there collecting dust as you constantly look at it and wish you had a reason to jump into a match besides grinding. In Dust, you can take a break for a week and come back with enough skill points to unlock a new weapon to try, or a module that will expand your fittings even more. This keeps things from going stale as I'll constantly change up my strategies from week to week depending on what I feel like spending points in.
5. Constantly Changing Game. Every update things change. Sometimes a weapon gets more powerful and all of a sudden people are now using different suits to counter it...or maybe there's a new mechanic that didn't seem like it would affect much but made certain equipment more useful and changing up how the game works. This ever-evolving style is what will keep me here for years to come. New content every so often means that I will always have something to try out or experiment with. Eventually this game will have some of the coolest things in any game ever, but it has to start somewhere...and I'm excited to follow along and see what this game becomes in the years to come.

At this point, it's just force of habit. I've made some great friends here too, which helps a lot when matchmaking drops an uber ****ton of protosuits on the other team and leaves you're squad 10 newberries for backup who don't even know how to cycle to their sidearm. But apart from that.... yeah, just force of habit.

the community, nothing more nothing less. I like most of you. I like that corps matter. I like the risk/reward.
everything that isn't "the game" is awesome. fix and add the guns maps modes ect. and it'll be good. but the core gameplay blows. it needs more. the market, the chat channels, the corps, and the meta, are functioning as intended.

I play Dust because when I play other games, I feel like I could be earning SP and skill in Dust instead.
I'm here for the future, the promise, the knowledge that CCP was able to do it before, and hopefully pull it off again.
When I play Dust, I'm kind of enjoying it, even when I'm pissed off at the game. It's the forums that make me question why I still put up with this. Lately, it's YouTube that's fueling my Dust desire. Seeing guys like Ghaz, Li-Moody, Pugnacious, Arkenai, and JohnyPew play the game at a high level inspires me to log back in, try new things, and improve my game. |

SP is what keeps me logging in each week when things are rough (TTK issues, my LR being garbage right now, etc.). More specifically it's the fear of loosing the opportunity to get SP by not capping out.
What makes me put up with the many flaws is foremost about building up a character that will be strong many years from now, and I want to support CCP to see DUST realize its potential. I honestly think DUST could become the greatest FPS ever made if it can make it through the next couple of years.
What compels me about DUST is the deep fitting system, the EVE-style skill system, the potential for deep, tactical vehicle combat one day, and most importantly the RISK vs. ISK mechanic. It's so cool to have a game where players can run proto gear but choose to run cheaper fits in certain circumstances. I like that loss has meaning, and that it leads to more tactical fights where personal survivability is a priority.

I've been seeing a lot of post where it seems the SP is a major motivator in why people play they game. To me that is unsustainable. The game being fun and exciting has to be the PRIMARY motivator for you logging in a playing.

Simply, what motivates you to play Dust?
The idea that one day we will have racial dropsuit symmetry and PvE.
BPOs, in their current state, negatively effect the economy. I say that as a someone who bought the elite pack.

Nothing beside the fact that I need a Sci Fi fix and no other good games are out there that really fit the bill.
I have none of the things I would like in the game, and they wont be here soon..... and frankly I find the shallowness of Dust rather....soul crushing.

I use to play because it was fun but now it is just a SP grind. I use to believe in the dream that never came true. I use to play.
I am on these forums just waiting for the day that the dream comes true.
So what motivates me to play? Nothing, I do not play anymore because SP grind is not fun.
