Playing in a suit that is underpowered and doing well makes me feel good about my skills in a lot of ways in this game. The lack of a kill cam is a godsend lately due to trends as well. Plus i like to take unique but not necessarily powerful weapons and use them effectively even if the people of the forums dictate that they are **** weapons (i.e the unloved plasma cannon).
I like to set goals to accomplish and this game gives you tons of them. Character development is much deeper than normal games where its not just you now have a better spell, have fun. It becomes it will take me this long and this many games to get X skill to a level where I feel comfortable then i can start working on this skill.
The game offers a lot that other games don't which will keep me playing for a long time. Take for example the battlefield series. I played battlefield 3 for over 700 hours. But the new one Ive played for a few days and maxed scout helicopters, maxed recon and dmrs, gotten everything i wanted in the game. Now what is there for me to achieve...nothing really. This game rewards you for the time you put into it. |

I want to see what Dust is in two or three years time and be able to tell someone who wasn't around as long as I have, "Back in my day..." This, plus the fact that I enjoy the vision, and the current product is a good, playable game.

That's a good question. The lore appeals to the mmo RPGer.
I never pay for a game/movie without a good story and the World of New Eden has plenty of lore to sink my teeth into.
Although DUST 514 is subpar in its current state, and yes people, this game is subpar, CCP's continuous push forward and ideas are what keeps me here.
So the Tl'DR version of why I play dust:

Today I logged in to get my 6k SP.
Then I played Fallout New Vegas, there are some DLCs I had not gotten around to. Some new mods for weapons and a few new weapons as well. Some perks looked cool. That and I got it on Steam as well as my Xbox 360.
Oh! You meant DUST!
Tomorrow I will login to get my 6k SP, if my friends are available I will play. If not, back to Fallout New Vegas or something on Steam.
Nothing about DUST motivates me to play.
My friends and squad mates motivate me to play, nothing CCP/Shanghai has done since 14 May has enhanced the game. Broke the game, changed the game, turned the game into a boring SP grinder and many other verbs and adjectives.
Motivating ... not one of the words I would choose.

It's fun to kick a$$ with my buds
it's rewarding to put my hard work into things that improve my capabilities in the game
dem matches where neither side gives up and the fight can go either way
heavy customization
satisfaction you get from killing an expensive looking suit or a really thick tank
that pain when you see the killboard and think "well that emptied my wallet a bit..."
stuff I'm expecting for the future (cmooooon mechs and PVE! also bigger matches)
the fact that I know it's gonna be here for a while and that it's constantly building on itself
FREE! (if you choose it to be)
The sp cap kinda makes me feel like I have to play (consider the rollover idea)
I can see this game completely overshadowing cod and bf in complexity and enjoyability, simply because of how much work will be put into it, keep it up! |

Honestly, STFU. Gathering such information at this point in time with the game in the state that it is in is a waste of resources. You're goal should be attracting new players and retaining them, not caring about what a few vets think. We have our spot in the game for one reason, we've already been here long enough to not warrant going anywhere until a better game or console comes along that will separate us from DUST.
The playerbase is like a rope on fire. The flame is burning upwards, and eventually will reach the longer players. |

The people I play with as much as the fact Dust is a scifi combined arms FPS. THe only other online multiplayer FPS I spent a massive amount of time at was BF3 on hardcore mode. It was excellent but the lack of play meaning anything and no real customisation mean I was fairly bored by time Dust came around. Much as the TTK here has gone to the dogs recently, the game is still excellent fun. Yeh, I do get occasionally stomped because I like the challenge of not using weapons or suits above advanced in FW and pubs, but when I'm playing with a bunch of any of the chilled out friends I've made through Dust, it still is fun. I think to many people play to grind, rather than allowing the SP to be the cherry on the cake. The good part is chilling with mates, shooting, sneaking, blowing up stuff, driving, flying, etc.
Disclaimer: Beer and whiskey might have been occasionally used to enhance my Dust experience, so the above statement can be taken with a pinch of salt |

- My initial motivation was the potential of Dust 514. I was never impressed by its mechanics, gunplay or visuals, but what the game COULD be drove me to invest heavily in this game
- When that motivation waned, it was the skill system that kept me going. There was always ONE MORE THING I wanted to get in pursuit of the perfect Proto setup
- After hitting my peak in what i wanted, my only motivation was my fellow Corpies and the pursuit of PC we all participated in. Being the best of AU/NZ was the goal, and competing at a global level with my fellow soldiers was the reward.
However, all these motivations were lost when frustration came to a head. Dust 514 is not the game I have stuck around so long for to get. Even overlooking the vast amount of bugs that tamper with a fair competitive arena, the game falls short with very little options for players (not referring to the skill tree as that is still a work of art).
If I were to get motivated again, it would require Dust to become the game I hoped it would be back in mid 2012. |

It's another facet of New Eden to experience.
There are no fixed roles. I constantly experiment with new fittings. Running straight assault with FOTM would induce massive boredom. Maybe that's why so many here say they don't play much. I've yet to need a respec and I play a wide variety of variations.
I'm now attached to this character as much as I am to my three pilots.
Analysis, spreadsheets in space and now on the ground.
CCP developers are some of my favorite people.
You can talk to devs and actually influence the course of the game if you are mature and reasonable.

I've been playing since closed beta in June 2012.
A few months ago I took some time off to play TLOU and GTAV which were awesome, but just recently I fired up Dust 514 on an impulse and am hooked again!
I wondered why I keep coming back to this game and have concluded that it's because:
1. The attachment to a legendary game world--EVE--and the continuous growth and bonding between the two games. 2. The opportunity to be a part of an amazing corp. 3. Great freakin' comms--both in battle and out. 4. Dynamic politics between players and corps facilitating the existence of a meta-game which continues to grow. 5. The depth of customization is lovely and rewarding. 6. PC makes my heart pound and will only get better and better.
The game is not perfect, but there is nothing like it in gaming today.
This game will NOT die regardless of what the doomsayers think and say! |

Hope I suppose. Or just that I haven't been able to use my computer for a few days. The game does enough things right to make me want to come back, but enough things wrong to drive me to insane frustration while playing. There may only be a few maps, but the modular design and the different lightings are solid. While the racial suit variety feels (and is) incomplete, the suits that do exist are racially distinct in most cases. I would say nice things about the weapons, but since the AR has been king for so long that quite a few of the other weapons may as well not exist for how often they get used. Collision detection still drives me mad (grenades bouncing off thin air, my legs freaking out trying to climb, etc). Prototype gear is out of balance with the rest of the game, and combined with the current state of ARs and TTK makes any meaningful fitting choices irrelevant. Why should I bother with an active setup, or any of the lesser used modules (speed, hacking, sig) when I die instantly anyways? I may as well run around in my Templar Sentinel BPO with double Templar pistols because it's cheap and doesn't die instantly, and when that's how I have to define enjoying the game, something is wrong.
Edit: Oh, and there is no metagame. Until they add meaningful conflict drivers, which PC isn't, then there will never be a flourishing metagame. |

Well a few things.
1. The repair tool. Not many FPS games have a medgun, and even fewer have a fun or rewarding way to heal people. The last game I played with a good medgun was Resistance 2's Pheonix. As most player have seen me getting 7k+ wp with the core focused, it's definitely my favorite equipment...still waiting for the fix in 1.7 to see allies health again.
2. Fittings. I love being able to have tons of different variants for suits and how versatality is actually a viable tactic in this game. There are so many options and most of them are balanced with each other (do more damage or have more health or have faster regen or have faster movement). The variety of suits and weapons also keeps things interesting. Sometimes I'll just randomly be thinking about a new fitting I want to try out during work, and it makes me want to jump into the game right after I get off.
3. Team Play and communication. When I join up with a few of my buddies in the game and start mowing down the competition it's so much better than doing that by yourself in a deathmatch. I've never communicated so much in a game before this, especially when just sitting outside of a match waiting for a battle. In games like CoD or Halo I've never sat with someone and discussed strategies about what suit I'm using, or about my recent findings with a certain fitting/weapon. Almost everyone I talk to is into the game just as much as I am and it's nice to know that I can completely nerd out to these people without having to explain what a scrambler rifle or flux grenade is.
4. Passive Skill Points. This is probably the most important one as it keeps things interesting. In most games you have to sit there and grind to get your next unlock...and once you get bored of the game it just sits there collecting dust as you constantly look at it and wish you had a reason to jump into a match besides grinding. In Dust, you can take a break for a week and come back with enough skill points to unlock a new weapon to try, or a module that will expand your fittings even more. This keeps things from going stale as I'll constantly change up my strategies from week to week depending on what I feel like spending points in.
5. Constantly Changing Game. Every update things change. Sometimes a weapon gets more powerful and all of a sudden people are now using different suits to counter it...or maybe there's a new mechanic that didn't seem like it would affect much but made certain equipment more useful and changing up how the game works. This ever-evolving style is what will keep me here for years to come. New content every so often means that I will always have something to try out or experiment with. Eventually this game will have some of the coolest things in any game ever, but it has to start somewhere...and I'm excited to follow along and see what this game becomes in the years to come.

At this point, it's just force of habit. I've made some great friends here too, which helps a lot when matchmaking drops an uber ****ton of protosuits on the other team and leaves you're squad 10 newberries for backup who don't even know how to cycle to their sidearm. everything that isn't "the game" is awesome. fix and add the guns maps modes ect. and it'll be good. but the core gameplay blows. it needs more. the market, the chat channels, the corps, and the meta, are functioning as intended.

I play Dust because when I play other games, I feel like I could be earning SP and skill in Dust instead.
I'm here for the future, the promise, the knowledge that CCP was able to do it before, and hopefully pull it off again.
When I play Dust, I'm kind of enjoying it, even when I'm pissed off at the game. It's the forums that make me question why I still put up with this. Lately, it's YouTube that's fueling my Dust desire. Seeing guys like Ghaz, Li-Moody, Pugnacious, Arkenai, and JohnyPew play the game at a high level inspires me to log back in, try new things, and improve my game. |

SP is what keeps me logging in each week when things are rough (TTK issues, my LR being garbage right now, etc.). More specifically it's the fear of loosing the opportunity to get SP by not capping out.
What makes me put up with the many flaws is foremost about building up a character that will be strong many years from now, and I want to support CCP to see DUST realize its potential. I honestly think DUST could become the greatest FPS ever made if it can make it through the next couple of years.
What compels me about DUST is the deep fitting system, the EVE-style skill system, the potential for deep, tactical vehicle combat one day, and most importantly the RISK vs. ISK mechanic. It's so cool to have a game where players can run proto gear but choose to run cheaper fits in certain circumstances. I like that loss has meaning, and that it leads to more tactical fights where personal survivability is a priority.
