Creates a person sized shield in front of the user. (Ya, I know deployable shield cover is coming, this is different)
Random things about it
- Possibly replaces grenades (or a regular equipment slot, but used by holding square, this is better methinks)
- Just large enough to protect the user (and anyone behind them. BODYBLOCKED!)
- Will stay active for a set amount of time or until it has taken enough damage to break through
- Rechargeable
- Prevents sprinting but does not slow you down
- Prevents you from attacking
Situations it would be useful in:
- When you find yourself out in the open with cover close by, but not close enough to get to (because they'll kill you first).
- When a logi revives you mid firefight but your a shield tanker
- When you're a logi and revive someone mid firefight but they're a shield tanker
- Gives scouts a little bit more survivability
- Using yourself as bait to let a Winmatar sneak around behind the enemy firing line with a shotty
- Getting enemies to focus fire on you then tanking them with this while your teammates can shoot unhindered
- Get stuck in a small room with a live grenade... or several, depending on how much they hate you
- Bodyblocking a door or hallway to give your team time to prepare
- Pissing off snipers
- Being the first person to breach a room
Reason for it to be grenade and not equipment (I'd just like to point out, I generally don't like the whole "grenade replacement" thingy)
- It's a panic device, so you won't have time to use the weapon wheel so it'll need a one button way to activate it.
(press O to enter vehicle, hold O to recall vehicle, press O to bring up shield...) (press O to revive, press O to bring up shield) revives are already messing up if your around a hackable objective
Alternatively it could be brought up by holding square and staying up until you let go (hold), or until you hold square again to deactivate it (toggle) (or it will deactivate once the set time has passed or it breaks from too much damage) |

This is a Phenomenal idea! If you've watched the KillZone ShadowFall Multiplayer, they also have this, but I like that you can't fire with this. Too many ambushes degenerate to grenade spamming through doors on both sides until a God Heavy( 2000 health) storms through with a Boundless heavy
And this would help PC. Would there be a Proto Level that allows for it be used Offensively, like a Shield detonation? That would be pretty sweet. Amazing work, I'm following this thread for sure!

*Not quite like the KZ one. In Killzone once it's deployed it becomes stationary, the one I proposed is more like a riot shield (Modern Warfare series) or that shield thingy from Halo 4. (I don't play halo so I don't know it's name)
I did think of one other variant too
- Wider shield allowing you to protect more friendlies (will have longer recharge time, shorter duration, less HP, I dunno, one of the three, but personally lean more towards longer cooldown for that one)
*Edit: *I only saw the campaign trailers, so I don't know if the multiplayer one is different.* |

Perhaps I skimmed through too quickly, but you have a logical problem
If it is a riot shield, it should take up a (light) weapon slot, if it is stationary, then it could take up a grenade slot as you suggest

In my head I see it as being more the size and shape of a nanite injector or lightsaber that when you push the button, it forms a shield in front of you. |

Riot shield with ASMG out the sides FTW!
The way you describe it seems ok as a light weapon like some have suggested.
While it may be a cheap halo ripoff, I don't give a damn about that anymore. We need more cool ripoffs.

You're hands would be occupied holding the device. (well, one hand would be, I see it as the left arm coming across your chest with the device out)
I picture the device (bare essentials only, devs can decide if it gets pretty lights or not) as a metal cylinder with a button on the top and the shield emitter on the bottom, your left arm comes across in front of you and holds the top towards you, with the bottom (and emitter) facing outwards, you push the button with your thumb, shield forms in front of you. |

It can obscure the view of the wielder a bit with a purple tint, and it could be kinds inverted trapezoid shaped (the energy bit) with kinda halo style shield effects, where it looks kinda like flowing water)
That's what I think the aesthetics could be.

So yeah, this **** basically would be tougher then heavies, but with less firepower, slower turn speed, flankable, and requires you drop your primary.
Looks balanced.

Stats: (stats affected by the skill will have the number for level 5 in brackets [ ])
Standard: Recharge time: 30 seconds
HP: 750
Maximum Duration: 5 seconds [6.25 seconds]
Advanced: Recharge time: 20 seconds
HP: 975
Maximum Duration:6 seconds[7.5 seconds]
Prototype: Recharge time: 15 seconds
HP: 1200
Maximum Duration: 8 seconds[10 seconds]
Variants (these are working names):
'Hidden'
shield does not appear (as in it's invisible)
Suffers from decreased HP
'Shepherd'
shield extends out to the sides as well, allowing you to protect multiple teammates (note: the shield morphs around/goes through obstacles in your path, so it won't stop your movement)
Suffers from increased recharge time, and slower turn speed (don't want you turning so fast they aren't in cover anymore)
'Scepter'
sends out pulses of shield energy at intervals, causing damage to enemies in the path in front of you
Suffers from decreased duration, and increased signature profile while active
Skill effect: Increases the Maximum Duration by 5% per level

While I was typing that another person posted stats, saying that it should have 2K HP at STD, 2.5 at ADV, and 3K at PRO and that it should slow turn speed.
I disagree, this is not meant to turn any suit into something that out tanks a heavy. The PRO level of my stats gives just 320 less than a MLT Heavy Shield Extender (ya, the vehicle module (1520 HP))
This is meant to give infantry some quick breathing room during a fight or ambush (if they get caught with their pants down)
As well as other tactical applications (see variants and think outside the box)
There's another equipment that has already been confirmed, a deployable shield. (I'm assuming it's some kind of bubble shield from Halo or a shield wall type thing) That will most likely be the kind of tanky shield you want. |

Is the shield coming out of the shovel like portion? How do you hold it? If it's sorta like mine then I'd say it looks more like a melee weapon.
Some more details about mine: on the end with the emitter it sorta pops out like how nanohives do in the middle. The shield energy comes out the cylinder, hits that, and spreads outwards forming a shield in front of you since the thingy is stopping it from going forward.

The shield is bright and colored right? It has multiple uses.
Once people are used to seeing these they'll know to switch targets once a person pulls it up, Hidden stops them from noticing the color and brightness and since their firing, the muzzle flash might stop them from seeing the person hold the device. So they won't switch targets.
If a scout gets into a fight with one other person on a mountainside and uses the shield it'd be like setting off a flair for all the enemy snipers to spot.
See a group of enemies coming towards the compound you're in, there's a heavy frame, a medium frame, and a light frame. Most people would shoot the Light frame first, he goes down the fastest and he's most likely going to shotty you if he gets too close. So you're shooting him but you notice he doesn't die. Too late you realize he was baiting you with a 'Hidden' shield and that he was a distraction to let the other two get close enough to kill you.
Average day in the life of a Blueberry.
Enemy sniper somewhere but you don't know where. Send out someone using 'Hidden' shield to be a target. Sniper shoots, guy survives because of the shield. And now your team knows the location of the enemy sniper thanks to the bullet trail. |

I would love to see something like this linked to the available PG on the dropsut. It could be fitted to a suit that has even say 1 cpu and 1 PG but it would be nearly useless. On a suit with more it would grow in power and usability. For me and my normal sentinel suits it would have a good deal of available PG and cpu to power it. Then there should be a skill for the equipment this would affect its efficiency and how well it uses the available cpu and pg.
This would make me want to play my heavy a lot more often. I could make small fire teams and lead the team through the door as a breach man without getting blown away by nearly every AR in the game.

We also looked at having it be a regular equipment but being activated by holding square. (sorta like how you can revive someone with O)
I think I'm against having it be tied to PG and CPU, it might be fine on a Heavy, but on a Logi? Not enough left. Scout? Assault? I don't know about them for other people, but for me, the only fittings I have with any PG and CPU leftover are Heavies, everything else I fill as much as I can into them. (BPOs FTW)
Perhaps another variant that utilizes the PG and CPU of the suit? The higher remaining PG and CPU in the fitting the more it adds, but if you don't have a good amount then it would be better off using the other version. But then this raises the issue: What if a Logistics suit with barely anything on it used this variant?
It could have several thousand HP depending on how much PG and CPU = 1HP
There would be even more Assault Logis than there are now.
I was also thinking of one that once formed, will gradually reduce itself (so the shield is taking damage always) why would that be good? Because the energy from the shield is being transferred to your suit shield. So when activated this variant will start boosting your shields back up to full while it absorbs incoming damage and acts as a buffer while you recharge. |

And lastly; if the developers insist on it being either a sidearm or equipment, a option could be made to make the quick weapon-swap change between two items of your own choice. So, most would then select their main weapon and this.

if anyone play mass effect 3's MP they had a shield guy... except he couldnt move when he used his shield lol.
anyways it worked like this, you could use it when ever you wanted for as long as you wanted, but you couldnt shoot. The shield itself had a HP value of a few thousand hit points. as the shield took damage it would change color towards red until it reached zero HP. At zero HP the shields broke/shattered stunning its user for a few seconds.
for dust 514, i think we should be able to move around with the shield AND be able to use a side arm, but you cant ADS and movement should be reduced to walking. (same speed as when ADS)
because of the obvious point and function of having a shield like this, it should be able to handle prolonged or focused fire. to do this, the shield would need several thousand HPs
std shield: 3k HP
adv shield: 6k
pro shield: 9k
now before anyone says thats op, energy weapons should work against them (flux grenades, laser rifles, scrambler pistol/rifle) and do increased damage. so anyone could easily flux the crap out of a shield user. also, when the shields HP reaches zero, it breaks and stuns the user for 3 seconds. While stunned, the user cannot move, shoot, switch weapons, or do anything else. (so you could flux a shield user and then kill him after his shield breaks and he's stunned)
the shield would naturally be resistant against explosive weapons! (mass drivers, locus grenades)
I could see the shield being very useful in breaching rooms or choke points (where locus grenades and mass drivers seem to be common), without being OP in open environments. the inabilty to ADS hinders the shield user accuracy in ranged combat, while a 3 second stun mechanic ensures that he is truly "taking one for the team"
add in wp for taking damage also. th wp's gain should increase as the user take continuous damage (starting at 1 wp for taking damage and increasing to no more than 5 wp a second)
and yea... it should take up a light weapon slot. |

add in wp for taking damage also. th wp's gain should increase as the user take continuous damage (starting at 1 wp for taking damage and increasing to no more than 5 wp a second)
and yea... it should take up a light weapon slot. I can't tell if you're a troll or just have a very strange sense of balance...
Several points against you:
- The average total HP of tanks that I've seen is about 5-7k. Now think about an infantry shield with 9k HP...
- Now add on a weapon to that, imagine a Minmatar Assault (skill gets additional sidearm clip size) with a PRO ASMG in CQC with damage mods and all skills relating to SMGs maxed.
- The point of this shield is not to absorb focused fire for extended periods, but only a few seconds. It's not meant to turn anyone into a tank (there is another equipment (a deployable shield) that is meant for taking focused fire and has already been confirmed)
- Taking up a light weapon slot would turn almost all away except for Commando suit users.
- 3 second stun would turn away a good portion of those Commando users
- Explosive weapons already do decreased damage to shields and increased damage to armor. Energy weapons already do increased damage to shields and decreased damage to armor.
Only even halfway decent thing is the WP for taking damage. |

- Two ways to use it: 1. Possibly replaces grenades (2. or a regular equipment slot, but used by holding square, this is better methinks)
Alternatively it could be brought up by holding square and staying up until you let go (hold), or until you hold square again to deactivate it (toggle) (or it will deactivate once the set time has passed or it breaks from too much damage) Stats are here.
This sounds the it would be better as an active module with a cool down for if we ever get active suit mods.

The current mods could be considered passive and in future we could get active mods, obviously like tanks, using an active mod sacrifices passive gains. I'm sure that's been mentioned actually.

I thought of active modules a long time ago but ran into an issue: How would you activate them? >.> Just how many buttons does your controller have? We'd need another menu wheel.
I think it's better as an equipment, but I can see how some people could see it as an active module.
*Edit: If you check the stats post you'll see that it does have a cooldown* |
