First of all, I love this idea! It using a grenade slot is a great idea so it can be easily accessed. It would be wrist mounted like a buckler and once activated won't deactivate until its time runs out, or the shield is compromised, so you can't turn it on and off at will, you have to commit.
Number stuff:

Why are some people giving it several thousand HP?
There are two versions of shield equipment (hopefully including this one, otherwise just one)
- Deployable shield
Creates deployable cover. Been confirmed but no details were given beyond that (that I remember). From my understanding it's a bubble shield or wall shield type thing that is placed on the ground
(For protecting groups of mercs | will have high HP because of this)
- Personal Shield
Merc uses a small device to create a shield wall just large enough to protect them from fire, shield wall is attached to the device which, since the merc is holding it, moves with the merc and is always kept in front of them.
(For a single soldier who needs to be a bit tougher for a few moments | will give a good boost to defense, but is not meant to make them indestructible)
Allow me to point out some factors so that people will think about them when posting stats.
- Recharge Time:
Fizzer94 wrote:Kaaliakota Assault Personal Shield Shield Hit Points/ 1100 Active Time/ 7 Seconds Recharge Time/ 5 seconds Protection Angle/ 60-¦ Movement Penalty/ none CPU/ 85 PG/ 17 Remember when making recharge times: The second it's done recharging the merc can use it again. So a 5 second recharge on a 1100 HP shield, imagine a dropsuit with that stat. A good chunk of firefights last longer than that, so a merc could use it at the start, the enemy uses their ammo attempting to break it and is now empty as it goes onto cooldown, with the user now armed. If the merc with the shield starts to fear for his life at any point in the fight he can just put the shield up again. Invulnerable.
- HP:
DeathwindRising wrote:std shield: 3k HP
adv shield: 6k
pro shield: 9k Scale it with other things in mind, It should not give infantry comparable(or more) HP to that of a tank. The deployable cover mentioned earlier might, but that covers an area and must be deployed with the carrier only having a limited supply, this protectes one merc and recharges.
- Merc behavior
Keep in mind that due to the nature of the game, things will be used for purposes other than the intended one, try to think as much outside the box as you can when trying to balance it.
I'm fairly certain if you had 9k HP on top of your normal HP you could potentially survive an OB. I've never checked how much damage I take per blast, but I can survive one blast in a suit with about 400 total HP, so I'm fairly certain the only thing that would stop you is being too slow on turning to the blasts.
As it stands with my PRO level having 1200 HP you would still be able to survive a direct hit from a Large STD Railgun, just let that sink in.
The only problem I've seen with the 1200 HP shield is that's the exact amount of damage one STD Flux Grenade does. I'd forgotten to account for Flux Grenades since I hardly ever see them. So a slight increase might be due, but not by much. (or give it a damage reduction on all kinds of damage, which at first glance, I think might be better) (Note: Energy weapons would still do increased damage to it, but not as much as without the resistances) |

Reno Pechieu wrote:Ecshon Autorez wrote: I was also thinking of one that once formed, will gradually reduce itself (so the shield is taking damage always) why would that be good? Because the energy from the shield is being transferred to your suit shield. So when activated this variant will start boosting your shields back up to full while it absorbs incoming damage and acts as a buffer while you recharge.
Would that imply that it takes from your own personal shield? Also, would this mean that suits with shield buffs get more out of this? And lastly; if the developers insist on it being either a sidearm or equipment, a option could be made to make the quick weapon-swap change between two items of your own choice. So, most would then select their main weapon and this.
I added two new variants to my stat post: 'Aegis' and 'Siphon'.
To extend what 'Siphon' does:
It starts at a set HP like all shields do. All other shields only lose HP when being damaged, 'Siphon' will transfer its own HP to your shields, recharging them till you're at full, or it's empty.
So the shield itself acts as a buffer, preventing you from receiving damage, while you are recharging your dropsuit shields, but the transfer is not instant, it does it slow, like say, 30 HP/s, so if the shield is destroyed fast then you won't regain as much dropsuit shields as if it had lasted the full duration. |

With the addition of the 1.8 Sentinel bonuses granting damage resistances these shields can now be changed to prevent the PRO shield from being 1 hit by a STD Flux.
Give the shields a damage resistance to EM or just to all damage, but more on EM. I'll be going back and seeing if I can fit that into the stats, not sure if it should be a bonus from the skill or just all shields get it on their own.

Ecshon Autorez wrote:SummaryCreates a person sized energy shield in front of the user. (Ya, I know deployable shield cover is coming, this is different) Random things about it
- Two ways to use it: 1. a regular equipment slot, but used by holding square (2. Possibly replaces grenades) (I prefer 1)
- Just large enough to protect the user (and anyone behind them. BODYBLOCKED!)
- Will stay active for a set amount of time or until it has taken enough damage to break through
- Rechargeable
- Prevents sprinting but does not slow you down
- Prevents you from attacking
Situations it would be useful in:
- When you find yourself out in the open with cover close by, but not close enough to get to (because they'll kill you first).
- When a logi revives you mid firefight but your a shield tanker
- When you're a logi and revive someone mid firefight but they're a shield tanker
- Gives scouts a little bit more survivability
- Using yourself as bait to let a Winmatar sneak around behind the enemy firing line with a shotty
- Getting enemies to focus fire on you then tanking them with this while your teammates can shoot unhindered
- Get stuck in a small room with a live grenade... or several, depending on how much they hate you
- Bodyblocking a door or hallway to give your team time to prepare
- Pissing off snipers
- Being the first person to breach a room
Reason for it to be a grenade and not equipment (I'd just like to point out, I generally don't like the whole "grenade replacement" thingy)
- It's a panic device, so you won't have time to use the weapon wheel so it'll need a one button way to activate it.
(press O to enter vehicle, hold O to recall vehicle, press O to bring up shield...) (press O to revive, press O to bring up shield) revives are already messing up if your around a hackable objective
Alternatively it could be brought up by holding square and staying up until you let go (hold), or until you hold square again to deactivate it (toggle) (or it will deactivate once the set time has passed or it breaks from too much damage) Variants and stats are in post #16. Yes yes yes yes, and good a heavy can use it, all we need is a slight hmg dps nerf and mmm the taste of excellent ideas everybody would love...

Aseair wrote:Ecshon Autorez wrote:Stats: (stats affected by the skill will have the number for level 5 in brackets [ ])
Standard:
Recharge time: 30 seconds
HP: 750
Maximum Duration: 5 seconds [6.25 seconds]
Advanced: Recharge time: 20 seconds
HP: 975
Maximum Duration:6 seconds[7.5 seconds]
Prototype: Recharge time: 15 seconds
HP: 1200
Maximum Duration: 8 seconds[10 seconds]
Variants (these are working names):
'Hidden'
shield does not appear (as in it's invisible)
Suffers from decreased HP
'Shepherd'
shield extends out to the sides as well, allowing you to protect multiple teammates (note: the shield morphs around/goes through obstacles in your path, so it won't stop your movement)
Suffers from increased recharge time, and slower turn speed (don't want you turning so fast they aren't in cover anymore)
'Scepter'
sends out pulses of shield energy at intervals, causing damage to enemies in the path in front of you
Suffers from decreased duration, and increased signature profile while active
Skill effect: Increases the Maximum Duration by 5% per level
Seems to be pretty good. Strong enough to survive a bit of 'nade spam, not stronger than a heavy. Not sure exactly what the purpose of 'Hidden' would be, though. To get them to fire on you and not teamates or trick them.

And as been just commented here has been suggested before, repeatedly. Actually much before the other one. At least over a year ago.
And so it goes.
