This is all I see all match almost every match and it is slowly driving me insane! Does profile dampening do anything to counter this for a medium frame suit or is this the great scout advantage? I'm not asking for a nerf I'm sick of nerfs, but I'm also getting more than a little fed up of the active scanner. Anyway I just needed to rant sort of, its cathartic.

The most advanced Prototype scanners can scan through EVERY dampening system you can put on a fit. So its not even balanced. I ran Dampeners a lot, but even Proto Scanners will break though 2 Enhanced Dampeners on my Scout
Of course, CCP wasn't thinking when they put it in the game. It only adds to the Protostomp. Like DJNN said, best defense is to just scan them back.
Honestly, it should have enver been put in the game in the first place, but it shows just how STUPID CCP are as a whole. |

Prototype damps are pretty cheap. Two of them on a medium frame makes it immune from scanning, barring the Duvolle Focused scanner.

Active Scanner Fixes:
-First of all, make it a directional scan like it's meant to be. No more of this "spin to win." This, I think, is the most crucial, but I'll continue.
-Change the chevron results to be static icons that "refresh" over the enemy's head every second/half-second or so. No more of this wall hax stuff.
-Buff countermeasures. I shouldn't have to sacrifice ALL of my tank and hundreds of SP just to counter one advanced scanner. I think the first two changes will be fine, but perhaps rebalancing could be looked at too.

Mieli Sydan wrote: This is incorrect. Level 5 dampening will put your medium suit at 45 dB precision. An enhanced dampener will drop your profile to 36dB, which is exactly the precision of an ADV scanner, which means the scanner will see you:
50 * .9 * .8 = 36 dB
You need Profile Dampening V and a complex dampener module to defeat ADV scanners.
You're right, for some reason I keep thinking they scale 15,22,30 but they don't.
So yes Lvl 5 dampening and 1 complex.
Also it takes 2 basics and lvl 2 dampening to get below 36. |

You have got to be kidding. A whine thread about scanners?
Two patches ago everybody could see everybody and we fought and had fun. Now people have to give up a slot to see what's gong on around us.
I've been running scanner since the day 1.4 came out. They're a pain in the a$$. They get you killed when you can't grab your weapon fast enough, they only last a few seconds, and they don't offer us near the visibility we had before 1.4. The only reason I run one is so that my squad can excel, and even that is a double edged sword because the second my peeps see the scanned enemy they rush forward and get the kill while I'm still spinning in circles. It's a balancsd item with a significant downside. Stop your bloody whining.
I hope CCP has the sense to ignore this juvenile gibberish. |

Solution: skill into scout. ;) As a scout, you still need to skill into Profile Dampening IV before you'll go underneath most (not all!) of the scans. And they'll still know someone's there. Considering the loss of eHP, slots and the SP investment, it's really not worth it.
I have started to run scout and say it is definitely worth it. I have made some observations running scout with long range passive scanning and an advanced scanner equipped.
1. If I get the message scan prevented, I can see on my tachnet that the red dot running the active scanners starts to twirl, fun to know that he is paranoid knowing a sneaky scout is close by but not where I am hiding. Working as intended and SP spend on dampening and scout is worth it.
2. When I scan the red dots and they are informed of my scanning's I see them very often stop chasing me and begin to cluster together afraid that a competent squad is close by with intel of their locations. Gives me time to escape in my skinny scout suit running in a direction where I see no red dots on the tachnet.
The above have been observed by either visual sight or by having them visible on tachnet from passive scans before and after active scanner was activated.
I do not know why you continuously say dampening is not worth it, the scanning messages are very useful when in a scout suit. I also have a logi with a scanner. I hate the you have been scanned messages when in my slow logi suit as I can not do anything about it and know a scout will soon jump on my back and shoot me in the head with a shotgun.
Now I am the scout doing the hunting.
Getting under the advanced scanner is enough for most pub matches, I know I need to stay far away if I get scanned by a proto scanner. That is most+ likely used by a proto squad, no match for my scout. |

But this is a good thing, do not buff countermeasures, now there is actually several modules to choose from on the low slots besides stacking armor and repair. Now you have to choose between tank or avoiding being scanned. As a newly born scout I very much prefer you keep your armor stacked as I do not have to add precision modules to my suit to scan you :)
I do agree with the spin to win issue, this need to be addressed. Change so that if you keep it still while scanning the chevrons are dynamic. Spin and the chevrons will just blink once and disappear again. Keeping the scanner steady will give it time to lock on the signatures of each dropsuit or it will only briefly show the location. |

This is an issue. Couldnt agree more. Having been on both side of the scan, scanners are :
1) way too efficient over range 2) very difficult to dodge even with 2 dampeners on a medium suit or 1 on a scout suit. 3) way too quick to cool off so you can just spam it over and over again. 4) Not that difficult to fit so you end up with 7-8 scanners in the same team.
Let's just say it is way more easy to scan than to avoid being scanned. Which poses a big issue in my opinion.
But hey i tend to hate detection tools in any FPS.

I'm not sure if scanning its ok or too strong, I'm in the fence with that one. But I do think CCP needs to add a covert ops scout suit with a cloak that renders it immune to all scanners all the time. Make the cloak hard to fit and the suit squishy so it's really only good at scouting and ninja hacking. I wouldn't want more ghost shotgunners and nova knivers. |

Actually, scanner are what GIVE scouts stealth. When someone's running scanners in your squad you get REALLY used to the information. You get used to seeing the enemy chevrons and utilizing the minimap for your information. It's SO useful that when someone evades scans it's a COMPLETE AND UTTER SHOCK. By having scans be so useful for picking up everyone else you forget about what you can't see, therefore making you look around less and rely more on the information provided and ultimately making a sneaky scout so much more sneakier. The way I see it scans are perfect the way they are. |

I agree. They should just do one of the following:
a) Leave "YOU HAVE BEEN SCANNED" up permanently on your screen - I ignore it anyway and just play with the assumption I have been scanned because it pops up virtually all the time in battle.
b) remove the notification entirely - even if you've been scanned. It doesn't help me (I just assume people can see where I am), and the person doing the scanning has his own notification icon, so it doesn't help him either. |

sure, as I said it is infested with scrubs defneding their crutch thus I let the thread die => https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=116805
I can only repeat what I said back then, scanners put the gameplay a step back because they nullifty certain tactics with no viable counter and beside that the mechanic of scanners is too binary and binary mechanics were never a good thing in games. currently you decide between making your fit useless in exchange of making the scanner useless or you just accept that you are perma scanned the whole game.
to simply fix it, the scan strength of the scanner should depend on distance of the scanned object, similar to weapons falloff mechanic the scanner would have an optimal range and falloff range. In this case dampening would simply reduce the range at where the scanner can effectively detect you. suit type, obstacles, skills & modules should add dampening to you reducing the scanners range but not completely making it useless. by such simple change the scanner mechanic is suddenly not binary, you can make compromises in fittings if you want to without making the fit almost useless and position on the map is even more important. |

Jack McReady wrote:-snip-
While that is an interesting mechanic, its not good enough. Non-dampened suits would still end up being constantly detected at normal combat ranges. If fall off was great enough that wasn't the case, people would switch to the long range scanner and continue as normal. It is also unreasonable to say then they should add dampeners because not every suit is supposed to be a stealth suit. You should have the option to make a stealth suit, but it shouldn't be required for gameplay tactics more advanced than full frontal assault.
The true problem with the scanner isn't the strength of the scan but the frequency of the scan (spinning/sweeping and margin of error aren't good either). This can only be remedied by greatly increasing the scanner's cooldown.
