Hey everyone, If we want this to have a sticky, then we need to make our voices heard.
Everyone report the OP and in the text ask CCP to give this thread a sticky. That way our voices will be heard!
And I started a thread just about it here: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1368271#post1368271 |

I can't believe that certain people have negative comments about this thread, I haven't seen them but there have obviously been a few. To the sad people who posted them, I hope that if someone in your family ever gets sick you will remember the day you were so insensitive and stupid to say something bad about another person's misfortune. There is a special place in hell reserved for people like you!
My thoughts and prayers are with baby Weston and his family. The birth of a child is meant to be the happiest day of one's life, unfortunately for this family that feeling has been postponed for now. The feeling will instead be reserved for the day Weston is given the all clear and can begin his life in earnest, free from all pain and ill effects of his ordeal. May God watch over Weston, ease his pain and help him on his road to recovery and may God also grant his family the strength they need to get through this time of adversity.

I cannot aid financial support at the moment, however, I noticed there were some negative comments regarding the ill and disabled, as well as euthanasia. It is important to remember that everything in this world requires resources. The ill may consume "more" until they are healthy, or always consume more depending on their illness, but everyone consumes some.
The computers you type on requires all sorts of metals and plastics. Your smartphones probably contain rare earth minerals that we can not replenish. If you are speaking on this forum and play Dust, you are a drain on the resources of this planet. Surgery's and medical services allow people to continue on living and enjoying their lives when they would've suffered and died. I think that's a better use of our resources than playing Dust, buying a new smartphone every year, watching TV, listening to music, and more, all of which are not essential to our lives. Does anyone you know own jewellery? Well, someone had to dig a mine and find the metal ore and jewels to make that, someone had to cut the jewels, smelt the ore, make the ring, transport it, and then sell it, all so someone could affix a ROCK to their finger that shines. In the case of diamonds, not even a colorful rock. Now, that is a wonderful use of materials such as gold, silver, steel and diamonds. Plus, the fuels used to dig the stuff out of the ground, transport the stuff and convert it into the product. Obviously. /sarcasm
Life saving medical attention is not the problem. If anyone wants to scream about the time, energy and materials medical care consumes, you should get rid of all your technology and go live in a forest eating nuts, because all your fancy entertainment devices consume MORE, so you certainly are not living in a manner that sustainably and efficiently uses resources to reduce human suffering.
Also, if you think euthanasia without consent when a person can be saved with a reasonable success rate is reducing human suffering, you must also think jumping off a cliff reduces human suffering. Life is often a painful struggle. If we all just jumped off a cliff as soon as we experienced suffering instead of working as hard as possible to diminish it, where would we be? Extinct. That's where we'd be.

Sorry if that was a long tangent to go on. I hope Weston gets better and lives a full, happy life. |

The first thing I noticed was this from the website linked by the OP... "We are just trying to raise some money so they can be closer to their son"
Kobra, what is wrong with this? I get that you're sucking the utility argument **** all over this thread but riddle me this: regardless of the outcome of this child's complications/treatment, why would the parents being closer to their child be a bad thing? I think I saw before that you discouraged people sending money partially on the grounds of it not being able to take significant financial strain off of the parents but it would help them be closer to their child. The contributions made by these generous people would have an enormous impact on the parents no matter what happens so why isn't this considered in your analysis of the overall utility of the situation?
Full disclosure, I support euthanasia in the following cases for different reasons... 1. A person wishing their life to end and deciding that they would prefer to die rather than live. 2. A person leaving behind instructions on what to do if unable to make medical decisions on their own (say, while in a coma). 3. A person unable to give consent but has no chance of survival and will endure pain until death.
Each of these cases is complicated with its own reasons for or against, but ultimately I have been in favor of euthanasia after careful thought.
****I should probably make it completely clear that I DO NOT feel that this situation falls into any of the three cases.
The thing about you, Kobra, is you give me the impression of someone who has not yet thought of all of the consequences to the arguments that you're using here either purposely for shock value or because you just didn't think enough before coming to your conclusion on the matter.
For example, you use the utility argument that boils down to "society would have more money if they didn't keep the disabled alive". Let me just remind you that this would mean that researchers, doctors, or anyone who has made a career out of helping the disabled or sick would probably lose their job. Society would have no use to try and improve on current medical treatments for these people and medical science would basically slow to a halt. I know this is sort of a slippery slope argument but not really. My main point is that you're not thinking about what your black and white implications mean past the initial "I'm the Dr. House that everyone is afraid to be but not me, I'm bold" factor.
I will just skip the emotional utility counterargument as I'm sure everyone else on this thread has demonstrated it well enough.
Basically I just see you as a bully. People might be ganging up on you because it offends them but it doesn't offend me at all. Say whatever you want but don't hide behind the utility principle like a shield because it's a weak shield at best. I'm calling you out on it.
Please just remember that you don't have ethics on your side and that there's at least someone who sees through it as just a way for you to rebel against modern social norms. If you wish to continue a debate on the moral issues involved with euthanasia I'd be happy to start another thread but considering you've made your opinion known here the only thing you stand to gain from continuing to discourage people form donating money is the satisfaction that you're potentially keeping grieving parents away from their sick child.
Looking forward to hearing back from you, or better yet, not at all.
I don't believe in any god but I do hope that things work out for the affected parents. I can't imagine how hard this must be for them.
+1 I ike you Toby Flenderson, i'm glad you were a random blue that jumped into my squad o7 ... and said hello ;)

I couldn't find the original postings, so assumed that was so, yet when I hear something like that, I always feel the need to post something in rebuttal, regardless.

As a merc I am not SVER fan boy, nor do I hate them. They are brother mercs on the battlefield whether they are blue or red dots, it is the battle that really matters.
As a father in RL I can only begin to imagine the battle that little Weston and his parents are in. I am very proud on the community's response so far, I have met some good people playing Dust & EVE, this just goes to prove it.
Both Jason & Mandy have had to give up work to be with Weston as much as possible at this most difficult of times, the hospital is 30 miles away from where they live. SO if you can give something, no matter how small (pennies all ad up) it will go to Weston's parents to help them support him in his difficult entry into this world and will be appreciated more than you probably think. I have given what I would normally spend on my passive and active boosters for the month.
My thoughts and prayers go out to little Weston, Jason & Mandy
