You can't split the meaning of a word like that, because that's not the way that language works. Arguing that "I don't mean it that way" is absolutely meaningless- no one else can hear your thoughts, and putting up a disclaimer like that doesn't win you a free pass. Invoking a word will always call to mind every definition, positive and negative, of that word. |

Also, I can vouch that the ShadowCompany are pretty decent folk about this sort of thing. I'll have to kill your clones horridly if you join up with them though :3 |

I rarely ever think of sexuality when it comes to games, this lifestyle is still new and is going through growing pains, basically going through the stereotypes and sensitive issues.
true gamers don't care what the **** you are; male, female, gay, straight, lesbian, black, white. as long as you can help them to gain victory, youl have the respect you want.
its those little kids that care about what you are.. my advice, either stay away form the kids or kill them in battle and gloat about it.
good luck.
This proves the point. Constant use of the word (and others) has desensitized us to the word's true meaning. It's just like driving to and from work. You do it so often that your brain goes into "auto-pilot" and before you know it, you have reached your destination without much detail of how.
The "n" word is just ignorant when used, as it was born from a decrepid era yet is used as a socially accepted greeting. Baffles me really and I am part Black. The "f" word, when used to display anger or frustration towards someone is equally appauling. How would you like it if you were no longer called by your name and it was replaced instead based on a flaw of yours. "You aren't Greg anymore. I think we'll call you 'Captain McStubby' because you are missing one of your apendeges."
To people it offends, stand the hell up and say something because if you don't, 1. you are in no position to complain and 2. you are just as guilty by letting it continue should it offend someone else. Seriously.
Remember...you can't cure "stupid". And ignorance? Well, that is just a deadlier strain of stupid. |

Exactly this. Words have meanings, as trite as that sounds. Otherwise, this would just be a scrawl of lines as opposed to a post. Words have a reason for being, and we invoke that reason when we use them. I can make up a word right now, but it won't matter because not one of you besides myself will know what it means. I can also use an old word but mean something different, but it won't matter because that word already has a definition. |

Let me be the first to say that I use the word gay in game when I die in a way I view as soft,, weak, or with feminine traits, I will not apologize for this as it has no direct derogatory insinuation toward someone who is gay, nor do gays own the rights to the word gay. As a matter of fact most of this post is gay...... There is some validity where personal attacks are concerned but this is within a corp surely they can simply seperate from one another, I mean does this need to be a public debate? I mean name calling? That's where we are?
When it offends someone, yes. What you intend when you say it is on YOU, but that doesn't mean it doesn't bother someone else. It takes, what, one second to say "apologies" and a tiny bit of self control to ensure it doesn't happen again? You CAN'T be THAT lazy, THAT unapologetic or THAT much of jerk, could you? Hell, it may teach you a little lesson in self-control. It has for me. I don't want to have fun talking and playing the way I do at someone else's expense. Why possibly ruin it for them when I have the power NOT to? |

I'd also like to bring up the topic of verbally bashing those with disabilities, especially autism (which, for whatever reason, gets a terrible rap on Eve, and to a lesser extent here).
My past job had me working as a school bus aide for disabled children. These are some of the nicest kids I've ever had the pleasure of getting to know, and it makes me furious when I see people saying things that generalize all disabled people as incapable of thought or emotion.

I'm not a fan of using offensive language unless I mean to offend someone. Words in popular culture have well-recognized meanings (and connotations) which many people rightly consider offensive.
People need to step up their game when it comes to communication. Words can have a lot of power depending on the listener. Insensitive speakers really don't get, or care, about this.
If people are being rude then they need to be called out or muted. The only thing we can really do is choose not to tolerate rude and inconsiderate behavior. |

I can totally agree with the OP, and I feel for the parties who have been negatively effected by the situation. I also, in a small way, can understand the other side of the coin (not from your story specifically, but in general). I use the term "gay" a lot, but I use it as a replacement for "bullsh!t". If I get killed by some laggy f*cking bastard, i'll say something to the effect of "What??!! That's f*cking gay!!", as in that's bullsh!t. Also, growing up, "Gay" was considered politically correct (I do live in the south) so I never really considered the full impact of the word. Of course if said in a malicious way it can be offensive. The more.......abrasive words such as *** and the like, I do not often use, but I would be lying if I said I never used it (never called anyone a *** because they were gay though, just as a general insult, which is I know is not acceptable). If I was running in a squad with my Corp and one of the dudes said "hey look, I would appreciate it if you would stop saying the word gay because it offends me", I would say "yea, no problem. I wasn't trying to offend you, it's just something I say. It may slip out again here and there, but I will work on keeping sh!t like that to myself".
All that said, not liking someone, being mean to someone, excluding someone, or any sort of negativity towards someone based on race, gender, religion, or sexuality is not acceptable. I don't care if you are a half Black half Swedish Jahovas Witness man/woman that likes other men/women. The only thing I care about is can I put up with having this person in my squad and on my headset. If the person is always hollering or screaming or constantly jabbering or interrupting or being rude or whatever, I don't give a f*ck how straight they are, I don't want to have to listen to that sh!t. If you pursue an alternate life style but are a normal down to earth person that I can shoot the sh!t with, you are alright in my book. On the game and in the real world.
Ponies Test, I would say just wash y'alls hands of the hole mess and move on to a new Corp. I read the thread and seen you guys may have found a Corp to your liking, I hope it works out for you guys. There are plenty of decent people here on Dust, it's just the morons that always scream the loudest, in game and in RL (this coming from someone who has been the moron more than his fair share over the course of his life). You could throw out names, but I understand you don't want the spotlight to be focused on the victim, and it would be best to say f*ck it and find a new home (which I know won't be a problem, there are plenty of good Corps out there). Although, I must say if some names surfaced for the community at large to target I wouldn't mind helping to force a bigot to make a new character.

ponies test wrote:Alright. THIS wasn't directed TO me, but I was witness to this, and I would call these "KIDS" out, but in all, it would just harm the victim more. But this is something I want to bring to you, the adult side of this community.
I got a friend into this game who is gay. Now, I'm not saying cartwheels, rainbows coming from his arse, but he does enjoy the company of men.
WELL, hes stayed with the game, and enjoyed it properly. Got him self, now, i think close to 12m SP. So, yes, invested some time into this, got him into " my corp" ( I use this term loosely now) and have had some great time.
All was fine till, after a while, he's noticed a large some of the community ( with in game) and with in the corp of some words going around. He doesnt like people screaming F.A.G. in an unfavorable term. As in, you get killed and hear "F'ing F.A.G.". Let me repeat, with in game, he hears people scream this and is getting offended by this. Even from this corp I spoke of earlier.
A town hall meeting has come up and I brought this up. The response "He should learn to HTFU and learn to get over it", to as far as "This is how I talk. If he doesn't like this, he should leave" My response to this was immediately, "You are justifying being an a-hole. You don't want to change how you talk around this guy, but would much rather continue the way you talk, not in regard to how you might actually offend this guy"
Well, you can see how long he stayed with in the corp. I even left friends and family to even follow him on his journey in being blue. And guess what, this wasn't just there, even in other corps, but it did do something.
The previous corp, the group caught wind of why he left, and it had others spool up and raise their hands saying "this also offends me"
One of them was black. I then received a message outside of game saying "F'ng 'n' ( yes, the n-bomb) should learn to grow up, and HTFU because life is unfair, people ingeneral, in the real world are going to talk to him like that and he should just learn to adjust"
This continued back and forth down to it ending in being called a "n-bomb lover" ( please replace n-bomb for a more or less, 6 letter word starting with n, a few g's, and a 'R')
Well, the corp soon got them selves a holding cell for new players, to teach and mold new players. Cohoerted my friend to rejoin, under new management, and rather a good guy did talk him back in, including the black guy from before.
Long story short, someone in that first corp told me they are now planing on closing this previous corp because they let both of these two in, because of how they left this first corp ( which I seen them leave under the terms of "I'm tired of hearing my sexuality being constantly used in a negative text, and treatment of race ( including N-bombing) is not acceptable as an adult."
So, I come to you guys, he doesnt know the corp he is in, is going to nuke, and take out some rather good names from the corp as...as far as I can tell, because of being a child.
So I ask you, was anyone being in the wrong here? Should I make this corp public ( I won't but I gotta ask)
I'm just left baffled, that someone can confront another, asking them to quit and they can just "I don't want to change, it is YOU that has to change"
I felt I needed to share and start making this public.
TL;DR crowd
Calling that red dot that gunned you down a "gay" can offend people in your squad. And has, and has escalated to an almost ridiculous point that, I want this a little out there.
This isn't CoD. +1
Im not GAY.

I don't think I buy into the 'you offended someone, so thats the only thing that matters'.
The disregard for other humans with slightly differing backgrounds, yes, I'd agree with that being an issue and really why are they?
But being offended is often quite subjective. I'm not interesting in kowtowing to any little thing someone might be offended by because of their own pet peeves, for example. No, not in regards to intolerance to gay people or people of other races, but maybe they just dislike something, but want to act offended about it. That's where the focus goes when you just look if someone was offended.
That's probably part of the problem - they guy doesn't want to ask how high when someone gets offended and tells him to jump.

ITT: Everyone getting butt-hurt about a term used to express frustration. Or is that term also verboten? What about verboten? I mean ****'s used verboten at one time, right?
Main Point: Corps exist for a reason. Find people of similar mind, ability, and motivation to play with. This idea that everyone must be politically correct while we are blowing bodies into a fine red mist would be funny if everyone wasn't so serious about it. Every time I read a story about juvenile behavior in the gaming 'scene', it's not the story that bothers me, but the reaction by other people.
You are using weapons of mass murder specifically designed to put as much biomass and metal into the dirt as possible and you are worried about whether someone is taking the emotions into account of anyone in hearing distance. Think about that for a second.
I'm not saying this behavior is good. I'm not saying that it's bad. I'm saying quite plainly that you are in a game whose sole objective is to kill people for cash, skill, and territory. Most of the world would consider that 'bad' behavior. This is all subjective. If you don't like a particular behavior, you have the power to do something about it. That is what makes Eve Eve. Leave corp, join another, and beat the urine out of these offenders if you feel so offended.
Someone complaining on a forum that someone called them a name while you were murdering each other only shows me that we have some extremely serious problems with perspective going on. |

Welcome to a FPS game. (MMO? You nerds wish. No.. what you have here is a lobby FPS) Offended? Then mute them. You can't control others views, are how they behave. And games, and ONLINE games are a release for many.
If some one is targeting you out, then by all means that's harassment. File a complaint. But if people are just "unleashing" or spewing crap, then mute them.
You can tell em to stop, but THIS IS A GAME FOR RELEASE FOR THEM AS MUCH AS YOU. Moral conduct? lol Yeah that's subjective. In real life and games. everyone moral code is different. doesn't necessary make em bad or good. life isn't black and white.
And if he really offended by this.. I'm guessing he's not a FPS player huh? You can't throw a rock in that field with out hearing some one say "what bloody fairy threw that?"
