Alright. THIS wasn't directed TO me, but I was witness to this, and I would call these "KIDS" out, but in all, it would just harm the victim more. But this is something I want to bring to you, the adult side of this community.
I got a friend into this game who is gay. Now, I'm not saying cartwheels, rainbows coming from his arse, but he does enjoy the company of men.
WELL, hes stayed with the game, and enjoyed it properly. Got him self, now, i think close to 12m SP. So, yes, invested some time into this, got him into " my corp" ( I use this term loosely now) and have had some great time.
All was fine till, after a while, he's noticed a large some of the community ( with in game) and with in the corp of some words going around. He doesnt like people screaming F.A.G. in an unfavorable term. As in, you get killed and hear "F'ing F.A.G.". Let me repeat, with in game, he hears people scream this and is getting offended by this. Even from this corp I spoke of earlier.
A town hall meeting has come up and I brought this up. The response "He should learn to HTFU and learn to get over it", to as far as "This is how I talk. If he doesn't like this, he should leave" My response to this was immediately, "You are justifying being an a-hole. You don't want to change how you talk around this guy, but would much rather continue the way you talk, not in regard to how you might actually offend this guy"
Well, you can see how long he stayed with in the corp. I even left friends and family to even follow him on his journey in being blue. And guess what, this wasn't just there, even in other corps, but it did do something.
The previous corp, the group caught wind of why he left, and it had others spool up and raise their hands saying "this also offends me"
One of them was black. I then received a message outside of game saying "F'ng 'n' ( yes, the n-bomb) should learn to grow up, and HTFU because life is unfair, people ingeneral, in the real world are going to talk to him like that and he should just learn to adjust"
This continued back and forth down to it ending in being called a "n-bomb lover" ( please replace n-bomb for a more or less, 6 letter word starting with n, a few g's, and a 'R')
Well, the corp soon got them selves a holding cell for new players, to teach and mold new players. Cohoerted my friend to rejoin, under new management, and rather a good guy did talk him back in, including the black guy from before.
Long story short, someone in that first corp told me they are now planing on closing this previous corp because they let both of these two in, because of how they left this first corp ( which I seen them leave under the terms of "I'm tired of hearing my sexuality being constantly used in a negative text, and treatment of race ( including N-bombing) is not acceptable as an adult."
So, I come to you guys, he doesnt know the corp he is in, is going to nuke, and take out some rather good names from the corp as...as far as I can tell, because of being a child.
So I ask you, was anyone being in the wrong here? Should I make this corp public ( I won't but I gotta ask)
I'm just left baffled, that someone can confront another, asking them to quit and they can just "I don't want to change, it is YOU that has to change"
I felt I needed to share and start making this public.

Oh and while I am at it " hearing"
"This isn't a girl friend corp" one more time because a female squads up, let alone is asked to join, I thank you plenty for scaring off the female base in this game. I mean, it is small as is, lets remove maybe another 10% off already.
No.... you talking like this just makes you sound like a sexist/racist bigot. |

The problem for your friend is that this is a MMO. Where everyone is behind a character name. With this they feel free to let loose with all sorts of diatribe that they would never use elsewhere. This will never change.
It is definately a two-sided coin though.
One side would be that everyone agrees to be sensitive to others beliefs/sexual orientation/etc...all in the name of getting along.
The other side is why should the majority change for those in the minority?
I guess for you and your friend it comes down to how much you like Dust as a game. Is it worth putting up with it to enjoy the game or do your ideologies take precedence. Only you can decide.
For me it goes along with hate/rage mail. I certainly don't like being called names but I recognize this is a game and casually ignore it as there is no real threat behind it. I could certainly report them but I don't see it being truly effective as it wouldn't change that persons behavior one bit. |

Racism and homophobia have absolutly no place anywhare as far as im concerned. Normally when it comes to nameing and shaming im not in favour but when someone is consistantly racist or homophobic then id gladly name and shame. These kids ned to be educated or at least informed that such oppinions should be kept to themselves in adult comunitys. If your friend has any issues concerning homophobia then get them to report the partys involved. |

I know this might be taking this too far, but... I feel they were wronged, and obviously for leaving, they felt wronged. |

Your friend is not alone in this oppressive and degrading actions and speech is not only offensive to many people regardless of orientation, gender identity ethnicity or any other difference that people can use to promote their own self loathing. Unfortunately i am going to bed right now and likely this thread will hit a low point and be locked before i get a chance to reply with a full sentiment. Good on you for advocating for your friend. |

honestly im surprised people still use those words as sexual insults... when I call a red or teammate a f-g, Im thinking hes an ******* that needs to get his ass kicked because hes being a ******* idiot in game and its getting in the way of me helping the team get a victory... im not thinking that hes a homosexual... I could care less about that if you can pull the trigger of your gun to kill the enemy.
I rarely ever think of sexuality when it comes to games, this lifestyle is still new and is going through growing pains, basically going through the stereotypes and sensitive issues.
true gamers don't care what the **** you are; male, female, gay, straight, lesbian, black, white. as long as you can help them to gain victory, youl have the respect you want.
its those little kids that care about what you are.. my advice, either stay away form the kids or kill them in battle and gloat about it.
good luck. |

@OP, you can't demand from people to have integrity in a "kill-or-be-killed" game. But you can cultivate integrity in yourself. Be the change you want to see. The rest will come with it. It won't happen overnight. Have courage to forgive and have courage to keep your integrity at all time...
If you think it sounds "soft"... try to be nice to other people despite what they do to you. Just for one day. You will see then the "soft" way is to not be nice... It's cool to not be "soft" imho |

nah, I wouldnt apologize for it, I really mean to call the idiots a ******* ******* in any way I can think of.
I don't give in to sensitive people or pressure, I speak my mind, if your offended by it, your best chance it so mute me. if you ask respectfully and mannered then yeah, il call the assholes something else but I wont change the way I talk because someone is sensitive to it. that honestly not my problem.
people have their own vocabulary and I have mine. if what I say means something different to you than it does to me, eventually wel both adapt to what each other's meaning behinds words are.
it seems that he lacks confidence in himself because of this, that's what im getting out of it.
when I talk, the last thing I have in mind is disrespect other than when im trying to insult someone lol.
honestly though, your asking this from a community of ******* kids from call of duty that are still in school. not going to be possible for the community to do what you want unless you parent each and every one of them.
this community is the shittiest community I have ever come across, you learn to ignore the kids and continue on to do what matters for you. |

As a openly gay gamer for the last 17 years all i can say is you've just gotta get over the little stuff, rarely do ppl say these things with actual malice towards the ppl they might be insulting, sometimes they do, then if you wish you document it and report it.
Your friend seems to have the right idea though, if a quite word doesn't change it just move on these games are huge and there is always welcoming groups that don't care or even openly welcome ppl with diverse backgrounds and ways of life, smart people know there is strength in diversity.
People would be wise to remember that what they say in game is kept in vast logs, in eve a copy of the chat logs is kept on your computer, players would have years of convos, here we don't have them or perhaps we don't have access to them, but rest assured CCP does, and if you cross the line they will if prompted kick you in the butt. |
