I'm not impressed with DUST, especially its playerbase, that's no secret. I'm not impressed by a 3-man squad in an HAV feeding off each other's assists to get a lousy Orbital. I'm not impressed by a guy that goes 30/0. (unless he's using nova knives perhaps, lol... non-glitched). I'm not impressed by how the game runs as a whole as far as programming.
But, after thinking about it. I think it's me. I've been playing FPS for so long, that nothing surprises me anymore. I stopped looking at games from a fan's perspectives; now only as a top competitor. Its easy to look past what's original about DUST, because to me it's just another FPS I'll play in the endless line of FPSes...
What drew me to DUST in the first place was it's likeness to Homefront (don't ask me why, it just reminds me of it). As far as content itself, I see a lot of Planetside, Battlefield, Homefront, Crysis, and a little CoD aspects mixed into one. Its like a FPS gumbo, as far as the battlefield and merc dormitory.
So, I the last time I logged onto DUST, I had my friend play; first timer. Everything was new to her, so I got to see it through her eyes in a sense. Needless to say, she did simply terrible, but it was her niave perspective that caught my attention. The super tall buildings, the cool looking characters, the non-earth weapons, the planets, the lore/back story, etc... not just another game where you have a gun and shoot.
And this is what occurred to me: DUST can be original in story. The Role Playing aspect. The immersion. Take some time to just look at DUST, look at the art, the concepts the ideas, the buildings, the weapons, etc... the content itself. On paper, DUST is a brilliant game. It makes a good gameplay trailer. And can be very original.
Now, if CCP can execute this, they'll have struck gold. Let's say 10 years from now, the game is finally finished(probably moved to P/C) Who says they can't recruit a blitz of people to play it then? The game would be 10 years old, but new to the people that haven't played it. And they will be awed by it's originality.
Something has brought people to play DUST, and some of those people actually stuck around. What was it that made you stick it out for any duration? Was it because you are the original TEAMPLAYERS and have reputations and districts to defend? Was it because you liked the EVE Universe concept? Are you playing it more in protest to other titles? I want to know. |

It can be interesting to stop thinking about Dust as a stand-alone game, and even to go beyond Dust+Eve.
Dust and Eve are two games set in the universe of New Eden. Also set in that universe are:-
* EVR (the Occulus Rift space fighter game) - soon(TM) * Three books * Countless chronicles and short stories * One TV miniseries - soon (TM)
These are the things we know about. Beyond even that, we know that the guy who was running Eve has moved within CCP and is now leading their "mobile" division, so we should expect some big things there.
So, are you playing Dust for its value as a multiplayer FPS? Or is it your way of experiencing the New Eden universe?

Dust has years to "become successful". It is free to play, and CCP don't really need it to make money as a stand-alone game. It is part of a wider strategy.
With most games in the state that Dust is, the publisher would write it off and move on to the next game. CCP aren't building Dust as just a game though. It is an element of that wider strategy, and so it has value even in the state it is now. Maybe at some point in the future they will decide that other elements of the New Eden experience are doing the job that Dust is doing, and they will let it die, but right now this is what they have, so they'll stick with it. |

I'm here to do my part in building Earth's first virtual universe, which is what New Eden will become once DUST has fully integrated with EVE.
I got into DUST as early as possible primarily to ensure that New Eden and its values were carved into the bones of DUST. I felt there would be a lot of pressure to dumb down New Eden in DUST, and to make it exactly like every other meaningless fps out there - and as things turned out there was a lot of pressure.
Much of that pressure has abated now, mostly because anybody still left in the game has had time to absorb some New Eden ethos and culture and come to realize that there's more to this than some arbitrary MMO backstory.
I admired your post 8231, but i will say that your realizations about what DUST is are to me the same thing as peeps saying 'Y'know, this DUNE story might not make a bad movie' or 'Ya, LOTR, maybe it would be a good cartoon.'
Imo the rabbit hole hasn't even materialized yet, and lots of work remains to be done EVE-side. And DUST is still only a heartbeat away from going to fps-hell in a poorly-woven core mechanics handbasket.
But there's a long-shot chance that this community of gamers/developer might make virtual-universe history. And Earth history too. |

As a great fan of the New Eden universe I agree with all that you said about the story.
One easy way to improve player's awareness of it would be to have the writers work on a few chronicles from the DUST side of things, post those up, and then provide a full transcript that can be read via the front screen in game.
Yeah it's just text (a well written story though, normally) but it's things like that which would help players to get a good feel for the universe.
That said, I'm just a fan of short written stories inside a lore I already know (that's written by it's creators) so I'm terribly biased in that regard. |

Originally, when I saw DUST on the PSN Store, I thought to myself "it's F2P how good could it actually be". This thought prevented me from downloading for at least a month. I finally gave in out of boredom.

This is what grabbed me. It pulled me in and hooked me. The depth of character development, it seemed HUGE, in the trailer showing the discovery of the implant, the Amarrian Empress seemed like such an self righteous tyrant that I wanted to cause the Amarr to collapse when she said
"we have been blessed, I will unleash this new power and end the war"
I remember thinking; "what makes her think she deserves to rule over mankind"
I immediatel identified with the statements made by the Gallenteans;
"We cannot allow one nation to control it.
"They have done enough to leave their mark on history."
"The soldiers would be dangerous beyond measure."
"The power they would have, they would be..."
"...immortal"
I wanted to fight for the underdogs. I wanted to take down the tyrants. I wanted to be able to play a role in the shaping of New Eden!
It was exactly what I had been looking for in an MMORPG shooter.
CCP, if you read this, which you will, give us more RPG in game. Let us feel the impact we are having on the universe.
Let us be the Merc we want to be: give us all our Racial Dropsuits! Let us dress in plain clothes inside Merc Quarters, and have the ability to customize our look and the look of our gear!
Give us loyalty rewards for our factions. Give us Pirate Faction Dropsuits! Give us more skills which give passive bonuses to various traits.
Let us interact with each other outside of the battlefield. Give us a Forum we can hang out in. Give us a world to engage our rivals in non-violent disputes. Give us a Market we can go into, instead of a simple menu.
You could even add a radio channel, which plays music and reports the Breaking News in New Eden while we are in Merc Quarters. It would add so much to the game. Fallout 3 and New Vegas had a feature like this, and it was very immersive and entertaining at the same time, because it reported the effects our actions had in the game, making you feel like part of the world you were playing in.
I know all of this would take time, but some things could be added much, much sooner than others. *coughdropsuitscough* |

This is way premature, but maybe it's worth bringing up now.
There is a part of the EVE universe that we mercs will never be able to effect, and also that EVE pilots cannot effect, and the we can also not effect working together.
It's the factional regions that are part of the backstory of New Eden - in hisec, in losec, in nullsec.
If we mercs conquer every mothaluvvin' planet, every moon, every installation, if we kick the ever-lovin' kittenpoop put of everything that moves, and if the pod pilots do the same in the space above us - we change the factional balance of regions not one bit.
The reason i bring this up now is really just as something to think about - although it is an amazing sandbox, New Eden is in some sense 'dead'. There is a level at which it has no ecology, no implicit dynamics, no interaction with it's sentient residents(i.e. us mercs and pilots). If we do succeed in collectively calling into existence this new universe, it will be to some extent a shallow and arbitrary in a universe that is little more than a painted back drop.
Now, that's a little harsh i know, but once integration happens and we have a unified economy, it will be the single biggest thing that limits the legend of New Eden. |

i'm glad to see there are people who love New Eden and who haven't got any EVE background.
Man, if DUST one day gets fully integrated into EVE universe, then the stuff that makes you drool now is only the tip of the iceberg. EVE lore is solid and pretty extensive, but what makes New Eden special are it's players. THEY create content that simply doesn't have any parallel to anything any developer could create. Markets, empires, politics, betrayals, power grabbing, plotting, scheming, spying... you name it. THAT is what makes New Eden so special place. If all this gets in to DUST one day, man, you're in for a wild ride.
I'm a gamer for as long as I can remember. From pencil & paper RPGs, board games, PC (and before PC), consoles... you name it. I tried many MMORPGs before I tried EVE. After seeing what EVE is, I can only say this - EVE has effectively ruined every other MMO for me. There's simply nothing on the market that can even begin to compare with it in terms of complexity, depth and immersion. In my book, EVE is the only game deserving the title "MMO". A true virtual world in every sense of the word. I can just hope DUST will one day become a true part of it. |

If DUST was open-world, the level of immersion would be phenomenal. Even if it were just an instanced open-world, much like EVE. The galaxy, our own too. Each constellation, cluster, and system. We can explore. The space stations of EVE, our cities. The ships, us. The space they fly in, the land we walk on. |

CCP have in the past used their dev powers to change the Eve universe in response to significant player actions. The Jita monument is an example. As CCP move away from Eve as a game towards New Eden as a virtual universe I expect to see them doing more and more of this. Look for in-game changes based on the "true stories" initiative as a first step. |

I agree that the devs have the ability to change the game and CCP certainly has made an effort to write player actions into the lore and the game, and i'm a big fan of that - the Jita monument was a tremendously classy act, imo.
But that is a completely different thing than players interacting with a living universe and thereby changing it. I'm not being critical of CCP here, just trying to sow seeds for the future. |
