I'm here to do my part in building Earth's first virtual universe, which is what New Eden will become once DUST has fully integrated with EVE.
I got into DUST as early as possible primarily to ensure that New Eden and its values were carved into the bones of DUST. I felt there would be a lot of pressure to dumb down New Eden in DUST, and to make it exactly like every other meaningless fps out there - and as things turned out there was a lot of pressure.
Much of that pressure has abated now, mostly because anybody still left in the game has had time to absorb some New Eden ethos and culture and come to realize that there's more to this than some arbitrary MMO backstory.
I admired your post 8231, but i will say that your realizations about what DUST is are to me the same thing as peeps saying 'Y'know, this DUNE story might not make a bad movie' or 'Ya, LOTR, maybe it would be a good cartoon.'
Imo the rabbit hole hasn't even materialized yet, and lots of work remains to be done EVE-side. And DUST is still only a heartbeat away from going to fps-hell in a poorly-woven core mechanics handbasket.
But there's a long-shot chance that this community of gamers/developer might make virtual-universe history. And Earth history too. |

This is way premature, but maybe it's worth bringing up now.
There is a part of the EVE universe that we mercs will never be able to effect, and also that EVE pilots cannot effect, and the we can also not effect working together.
It's the factional regions that are part of the backstory of New Eden - in hisec, in losec, in nullsec.
If we mercs conquer every mothaluvvin' planet, every moon, every installation, if we kick the ever-lovin' kittenpoop put of everything that moves, and if the pod pilots do the same in the space above us - we change the factional balance of regions not one bit.
The reason i bring this up now is really just as something to think about - although it is an amazing sandbox, New Eden is in some sense 'dead'. There is a level at which it has no ecology, no implicit dynamics, no interaction with it's sentient residents(i.e. us mercs and pilots). If we do succeed in collectively calling into existence this new universe, it will be to some extent a shallow and arbitrary in a universe that is little more than a painted back drop.
Now, that's a little harsh i know, but once integration happens and we have a unified economy, it will be the single biggest thing that limits the legend of New Eden. |

The Jita monument is an example. As CCP move away from Eve as a game towards New Eden as a virtual universe I expect to see them doing more and more of this. Look for in-game changes based on the "true stories" initiative as a first step. I agree that the devs have the ability to change the game and CCP certainly has made an effort to write player actions into the lore and the game, and i'm a big fan of that - the Jita monument was a tremendously classy act, imo.
But that is a completely different thing than players interacting with a living universe and thereby changing it. I'm not being critical of CCP here, just trying to sow seeds for the future. |
