I'm not impressed with DUST, especially its playerbase, that's no secret. I'm not impressed by a 3-man squad in an HAV feeding off each other's assists to get a lousy Orbital. I'm not impressed by a guy that goes 30/0. (unless he's using nova knives perhaps, lol... non-glitched). I'm not impressed by how the game runs as a whole as far as programming.
But, after thinking about it. I think it's me. I've been playing FPS for so long, that nothing surprises me anymore. I stopped looking at games from a fan's perspectives; now only as a top competitor. Its easy to look past what's original about DUST, because to me it's just another FPS I'll play in the endless line of FPSes...
What drew me to DUST in the first place was it's likeness to Homefront (don't ask me why, it just reminds me of it). As far as content itself, I see a lot of Planetside, Battlefield, Homefront, Crysis, and a little CoD aspects mixed into one. Its like a FPS gumbo, as far as the battlefield and merc dormitory.
So, I the last time I logged onto DUST, I had my friend play; first timer. Everything was new to her, so I got to see it through her eyes in a sense. Needless to say, she did simply terrible, but it was her niave perspective that caught my attention. The super tall buildings, the cool looking characters, the non-earth weapons, the planets, the lore/back story, etc... not just another game where you have a gun and shoot.
And this is what occurred to me: DUST can be original in story. The Role Playing aspect. The immersion. Take some time to just look at DUST, look at the art, the concepts the ideas, the buildings, the weapons, etc... the content itself. On paper, DUST is a brilliant game. It makes a good gameplay trailer. And can be very original.
Now, if CCP can execute this, they'll have struck gold. Let's say 10 years from now, the game is finally finished(probably moved to P/C) Who says they can't recruit a blitz of people to play it then? The game would be 10 years old, but new to the people that haven't played it. And they will be awed by it's originality.
Something has brought people to play DUST, and some of those people actually stuck around. What was it that made you stick it out for any duration? Was it because you are the original TEAMPLAYERS and have reputations and districts to defend? Was it because you liked the EVE Universe concept? Are you playing it more in protest to other titles? I want to know. |
