It sounds like you need practise using militia tanks. You learn to get out quick when 3-4 militia swarmers / AV nades will kill you. I haven't used higher tier tanks this build, but over confidence is the biggest killer of HAVs IMHO.

I feel the problem lies with the actual cover we're hiding behind. Tank traps, huge cargo crates, massive towers, and generally things which aren't "person size". The battlefield does feel like it's not designed for infantry to be dug in anywhere....

Well Noc, that depends on how they balance the reppers and damage reductions. Probably more like 5-7 seconds. Plenty of time to die to splash damage. But a change on boosters/reppers will keep them out of the game longer when they sustain damage. ...

Relax, and let them fix stuff. I think tanks are legit for ambush. Once we have our 25% damage back it'll be ok. Still scary... But it's a tank. You should be afraid. You shouldn't be helpless.
