I remember getting 40k sp one battle right after the reset. Now that there is this cap, I literally can only get 27k in a day. If I play a battle for the whole 15 minutes, that's 4500 wp. If I get another 1200 wp that brings my total to 5700 sp. ...

They're coming out with a plasma cannon or something that will be dumbfire only I believe. But yes, the splash damage radius doesn't make sense. A better bonus would be a 5-10% increase to swarm speed per level. That, or faster lock times.

The best solution would be a different color of nanite bubble expanding from the nanohive. For instance, an ammo hive would appear bluish, a repair hive would appear redish, and a hive that gave both would appear purplish.

The easiest way to implement this would be to combine it with the signature profile of the vehicle. Basically, the lower the signature profile, the harder it is to maintain a lock, or the less of a chance for the lock to be successful.
