I had to biomass an alt to get to the new character creation screen, but right you are! I'm glad they're incorporated, but as you say, their presence is pretty subtle. So, I amend my suggestion to: Put the racial movies in the Help->Movie menu.

My impression is that the feel of this has slightly improved, and I'm happy enough with it for infantry weapon and equipment selection...selecting the wrong thing takes just another half-second to remedy, and that's usually not a life or death pro...

I think your memory is colored by nostalgia - they (at least the PRO Viziams) were very OP and overused right before uprising. They could pretty much insta-kill any suit just by sweeping over you for a fraction of a second once they were warmed up...
