Laser rifles are, out of all things, really cool. But I remember when I got in the beta back in January February and March a lot of people used the Laser Rifle. Of course not too many, but a fairly good amount. It was really common and admired. It was very considerably effective weapon at range then the AR and alike, but not for sniping ranges. But it killed efficiently (wasnt overpowered though) and was a unique weapon. I am a very frequent Dust 514 merc and I've been for a good amount of time, but ever since Uprising and the respec, I tried the LR again. But it was different. It was better in many good ways, but it isn't powerful enough now. I saw a dev article about LR and the new red dot on it. It looks awesome! So I figured since you guys are tweaking it, please upgrade the damage output alike it used to be. It's a great concept and a tactical weapon that requires precision, timing and focus. But it's damage output, in general, really isn't rewarding enough anymore. Does anyone know what I'm saying? I barely see any Laser Rifle drop suits anymore too. Thanks,

I think your memory is colored by nostalgia - they (at least the PRO Viziams) were very OP and overused right before uprising. They could pretty much insta-kill any suit just by sweeping over you for a fraction of a second once they were warmed up. At the time, people were saying that there was a bug with only the Viziam...I don't know if that was true, but the LR in general got nerfed hard with Uprising.
I've only tried the STD LR since Uprising, but I tend to agree with your current assessment on their current state...they feel a bit underpowered. I much preferred the Chromosome sights, big wings and all. I'll reserve stronger judgement on their current effectiveness until I try the new red dot... |

I have to agree with Gorra Snell; it used to be completely OP.
I've tried up to the ADV LR and I don't really have anything to complain about; haven't tried the red dot, yet. I've found the weapon is actually pretty effective, but its role has change. The LR is no longer a run-and-gun assault weapon; it is a tactical support weapon. In its current state, the LR isn't meant to maul a large number of people, it is meant to suppress, get kills assists, and kill steal. Also, anyone not in cover, in an open area, or standing still are subject to getting fried; gotta pick the right targets. It's a difficult weapon to use, no doubt, but it's an effective weapon if one knows how to use it. |

The new sights will be an improvement but sometimes I still feel that they could use a longer range since they are ineffective at closer ranges and only start doing decent damage after it has warmed up for a bit. I think this will make it better at its niche to be more of a suppressing weapon.

It needs some tweaking. It doesn't stand out at long ranges anymore and it obviously isn't ment for close quarters. The advanced LR, I actually haven't tried that, lol. |

I haven't ever seen it as a run-and- gun nor actually have seen anyone try that, but you can't say that the standard is effective, especially comparing it to pre-uprising. It's pretty nerfed, I usually only see 1 person using it every 3 matches or so. |

I run the ELM LR fairly often these days. Unfortunately you HAVE to run it on an amarr assault with with at least three points in it. That makes the LR the only weapon to require 812k sp before even speccing into the weapon for it to be useful, and even then you have to use a certain weapon.
This weapon would be fine (even with the current sight) if the way the damage bonus was removed after you stopped firing. The LR damage bonus should cool down instead of being reset to 0 instantly.
As it stands now, you reload everytime you shoot because once you've gotten the beam hot enough to kill you've burned through half your cap anyway, so you'll need to reload before you have a chance to kill again.
With the damage bonus resetting instantly also renders the LR operation passive bonus f'ing useless. you reload after every time you fire anyway, so what does it matter if the gun is cool three quarters through the reload instead of just at halfway?
So tl;dr - slow the rate that the LR loses it's damage bonus from sustained fire.

The laser may need a buff. It may not. I suspect that the current numbers are okay but the weapon is hampered by its sights and difficult to judge range.
Before changing the damage or range we need to see how it performs with the new sights. Then CCP can decide what to change next. An increase in range would probably require a debuff somewhere else to keep it in balance.
Changing too many things at once is just going to break what little balance we have.
TLDR: Wait and see what happens. |

Was using it earlier today. The laser rifle is functional... went like 8/3 in one match... 7/1 in another. 10/2 in another.
It will eat scouts alive, kill assaults/logis, but it seems to have a hard time on heavies. I mean you'll overheat before you kill a heavy usually....
But they are quite effective at borderline sniper range. The new red dot sight is going to help out. |

What suit were you using it on? |
