This is intended Dropships at 0 stop flying. So testing on the ground makes no difference because it's not going to crash to the earth. They take a little bit after hitting 0 to burn and blow up. They can blow up before hitting the ground.

yep I think we need them back too. It's really the best way little corps get involved in the game, they regularly play corp matches. With PC though way too much is at stake. To launch a failed invasion costs at minimum 80 million.
