I have a sister who loves shooters, so recently I got her into Dust 514. It took some coaching but eventually she got the hang of the shooting mechanics, neocom, and even the skill system. She was having a blast playing in the academy scoring numerous kills with her shotgun fit scout suit. However, though she had played multiple FPSs prior to Dust, she had never coordinated with a squad on a mic. Then I had her play several matches with me and together managed to do fairly well however, I told her that it was absolutely necessary for her to play this game as part of a corporation for her to have the most fun. She was excited about this since she had also never played in a close-knit community of players like that seen in many corporations and alliances in Dust.
Needless to say, the reality was a bit of a shock. No sooner had we joined when our squadmates started using the most offensive of vulgarities in seemingly endless repetition. My sister was forced to listen to jokes and quips involving ****, abuse, and all manner of misogynistic vulgarities. Now to be clear, my sister is no prude but this was way over the top.
I want my sister to like this game and I think she wants to like it too but really guys, can we please tone down the hypermasculine banter a bit? Obviously as her brother, I feel a sense of protectiveness but it would be disturbing for any sensible human to have to listen to a bunch of grown men behaving like animals in front of a woman. I can tell you right now, if she feels like its way out of hand, she will not want to continue playing for long.
I don't want anyone to think I'm suggesting censoring yourselves all together by running every sentence through a mental filter. All I'm asking is that we treat the women here like we would if they were our real-life friends: with a sense of decency and, dare I say it, like a gentleman would.
Am I crazy to ask such a request? and are there any women who care to voice their opinions on the matter? |

You're always going to run into vulgarities on the internet but women do have it tough on video games.
You have a bunch of ***** deprived men with no sense of how to deal with women and they just say whatever comes to mind because of the previous mentioned severe ***** deprivation these fools suffer from.
usually little boys that have small penises and even smaller egos will act outlandish when they hear a girl.
Now the grown men that act like they've never seen a woman before are what real life people call "failures." |

Well, I think it depends from the attitude/culture someone or some groups of people have. We used to have 4 girls playing with us on MAG, and we were ok with each other and...we did gathered each others many times and someone even found love |

Yeah, that'll be the day.
With that said, I was happy to discover the kindness that sprung up from this thread. I came in expecting people to constantly remind you of the ignore function, along with statements of how that's just the way things are. Instead I've seen people agreeing that these loudmouth idiots are stupid and aren't worth the time it takes to kill them. Given how oddly bitter that sounded, I suppose I'm a little weird for knowing that such a sentiment warms my heart, but still. |

Solution: create a custom chat channel and invite players you know to be respectable to join. The channels you join will always be there even when you log back in. You can even give them passwords. Join a corporation with strict guidelines on age/behavior. I have teenage boys in my corp that have more maturity than I did when I was their age. It'll take some work, but it's definitely possible. |

I think all decent internet-proficient human beings would agree that you can be just as vulgar as you wish on the internet and say whatever you want and it's cool. We aren't bother by things like "suck my **** *****" and other casual banter. The thing is that's not what people are talking about. What's being talked about is people talking about specific and personal sexual comments towards an individual. And I don't care if it's male or female...or even the same sexes. That's just creepy.

Hope you don't think I'm trying to be an ass for stating that, but I see this kind of logic all the time. The fact of the matter is we all treat each other like **** in online games. We all just try to tolerate it to some degree until we're desensitized to it. But once a female gets added to the equation, we suddenly have to be on our best behavior? Its a bad habit that makes you undesirable to people who would make nice friends, with a good impact on you, and to others. Society generally views, and half of the time stops, profanity around children. So should dust. |

That's what I'm saying in a round about way. Why is this suddenly an issue now when a female is involved. Toxicity in a community isn't an old concept, but people just like to turn and look the other way since anonymity dictates it. It only becomes more apparent when gender is thrown into the pot. |

I suppose there are a few that would prefer to have their sex demeaned and unvalued but I think most would like to be respected for what they are. I'd rather we clean up our act as a whole instead of adjusting when we thing someone with ovaries are on. Yeah I was going to say something about being desensitized. It's still cool and I say crude things to my female friends as well. The same stuff I'll tell anyone that's not the issue here. |

I tend to stay away from females in shooters. They don't really like my approach, I talk to them and treat them just like anybody else. As opposed to the loser who hears them talk and quotes how sexy they sound or how they would become a slave for them bla bla bla. I guess it's because I have a girlfriend of my own so don't feel the need to attach myself to them in a video game. I do have a few female friends in PS3 though, they earned my respect by being capable teammates. |

Making offensive comments (that aren't just in the spirit of something, like game trash talk) to ANYBODY, stranger or not, is not cool with me. That's just stupid.
Sucks for females and games though. If this thread is simply asking for people to not be a total **** to females, than I agree one-hundred percent. Some of the stuff I hear (and it's probably why I hear it so rarely) when a female is on mic is crazy.
Other than that, I say absorb 'em in our chats! Don't have to change anything...except the comments regarding women if you do that. If impossible, there is plenty of people out there! I know they've got groups of similar people with similar problems and such. |

Understandable but I'm curious what corporation you're in.
Have you brought this issue up with corporation command? Or atleast brought it to the attention of those offenders? They may well just simply be used to the "boys club" mentality and simply need a reminder that ladies are present. |

Sadly, you will not be able to change the community as a whole, although it doesn't hurt to try... The more people who speak up for this, the better.
Too many people still consider gaming a "boys club", which just doesn't do justice to this fantastic new medium. We will all have to grow out of that eventually (you can have your boys club, but keep it to your "bros" please... I'm not your bro). |

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Take my comments as sort of a gentle suggestion.
As I've previously stated, I don't expect the dust community to change their behavior. I'm simply saying that its not going to help us bring in women like my sister who enjoy shooters.
To those of you who say we shouldn't treat women any differently I have to disagree. Women are different from men and not just physically. Sure they don't want us to coddle them and treat them differently as a person while playing. Obviously I'm not asking that we go easier on them in the game or treat them like they're stupid when it comes to video games. All I'm asking is that we show a little decency when they are in our squads.
Tbh, I wouldn't mind if we were a little less crude and vulgar when women aren't around. I like to think I'm playing this game with a bunch of adults and not 10 year olds who just learned how to say the "F-word". However, I do think we could stand to make a special effort when women join our squad. As also previously stated, no doubt there are women out there (perhaps even our friends) who have a very low sense of self-worth. This shouldn't give us license to flash our childish behavior and conversations around other women who aren't impressed by this.
I know its kind of a cultural thing and true "manliness" is slowly falling by the wayside. No where have I noticed this more then in video game communities. If you are behind hearing this then by all means, ignore. I'm simply speaking to the men who like me, grow tired of the constant degradation of women in our talk, especially when they are present in our squads.
FYI, AnotherHeavy, this is not my main character. I am with EoN on my main. For the most part they have been pretty good but there is room for improvement. I don't want to leave the corp I'm in and there are several guys who I'd love for her to squad with. We squaded with some non-EoN guys last night who were making some obscene gay jokes and just generally talking trashy (different from trash-talking which is fine) so we left and tried to join another squad. Sometimes you have to take what you can get but that can at times be disastrous. |

Thanks for the post, TC. Overhearing gross jokes is pretty annoying (of course, I think most of those people are middle-schoolers), so usually my chat is off. But I can't imagine it's only girls who are irritated by this. |

It sounds like you're overfeminised. Words are just that, words, if you get offended by them then you have the mentality of a teenager. Grownups talk how they like and can let others words wash over them without getting their feelings hurt. |

Leon Nocturna wrote:I have a sister who loves shooters, so recently I got her into Dust 514.

They shouldn't. But as a general rule you should not be a dumbass towards anyone. Women just seem to get a disproportionate amount of dumbassery directed towards them. |

Lol @ takahiro kashuken. So you're saying that women should just endure vulgarities and such towards them in game because that happens in real life too? How about growing up? Or if you really are an adult, how about little reality check, getting out of the basement and meeting people in real life? Sorry, tried to quote but phone`s acting up. |

We're not talking about trying to appease ppl and if you really can't control yourself around women then by all means don't bother. No one is making a scene either. They'll just stop playing and leave. If that's the way you want it then ok. Contrary to what a lot of people here seem to think, real grown up adults do not make racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. comments as a general rule. I think the majority of guys who play this game would agree. |

Bottom line by my reckoning is that you should try and treat all people with respect. If it's someone you can't bring yourself to respect at least angle for civility. Gender shouldn't even factor into it.
The way some folk react to a woman's presence on the net is wearisome and cringeworthy. In the cases leaning toward creepy rather than crass it just makes me feel grimy even though it's not directed at me. Must be real uncomfortable on the receiving end.

Actually they do regulate certain behaviours in game. Read your TOS.
When it becomes a repeated and targeted behaviour, it begins to violate REAL laws and CCP has to step in at the moment they become aware or face legal repercussions themselves.
And I am unaware of any faction in EVE that openly endorses or encourages this behaviour. |
