I have a sister who loves shooters, so recently I got her into Dust 514. It took some coaching but eventually she got the hang of the shooting mechanics, neocom, and even the skill system. She was having a blast playing in the academy scoring numerous kills with her shotgun fit scout suit. However, though she had played multiple FPSs prior to Dust, she had never coordinated with a squad on a mic. Then I had her play several matches with me and together managed to do fairly well however, I told her that it was absolutely necessary for her to play this game as part of a corporation for her to have the most fun. She was excited about this since she had also never played in a close-knit community of players like that seen in many corporations and alliances in Dust.
Needless to say, the reality was a bit of a shock. No sooner had we joined when our squadmates started using the most offensive of vulgarities in seemingly endless repetition. My sister was forced to listen to jokes and quips involving ****, abuse, and all manner of misogynistic vulgarities. Now to be clear, my sister is no prude but this was way over the top.
I want my sister to like this game and I think she wants to like it too but really guys, can we please tone down the hypermasculine banter a bit? Obviously as her brother, I feel a sense of protectiveness but it would be disturbing for any sensible human to have to listen to a bunch of grown men behaving like animals in front of a woman. I can tell you right now, if she feels like its way out of hand, she will not want to continue playing for long.
I don't want anyone to think I'm suggesting censoring yourselves all together by running every sentence through a mental filter. All I'm asking is that we treat the women here like we would if they were our real-life friends: with a sense of decency and, dare I say it, like a gentleman would.
Am I crazy to ask such a request? and are there any women who care to voice their opinions on the matter? |

You're always going to run into vulgarities on the internet but women do have it tough on video games.
You have a bunch of ***** deprived men with no sense of how to deal with women and they just say whatever comes to mind because of the previous mentioned severe ***** deprivation these fools suffer from.
usually little boys that have small penises and even smaller egos will act outlandish when they hear a girl.
Now the grown men that act like they've never seen a woman before are what real life people call "failures." |

Well, I think it depends from the attitude/culture someone or some groups of people have. We used to have 4 girls playing with us on MAG, and we were ok with each other and...we did gathered each others many times and someone even found love |

Thanks Sgt Kirk, I agree. And Royce, I definitely want her to get to know some of the guys and for them to get to know her better as well but she won't want to if they are constantly making comments which display a generally calloused sexual attitude towards women and spilling vulgarities with rage-soaked misogynistic venom. |

Seriously though, at least we do have the ignore button but it does suck to be them sometimes.
I watch my little sister play video games she now just mutes everybody that has a mic because it's easier that way

Yeah, that'll be the day.
With that said, I was happy to discover the kindness that sprung up from this thread. I came in expecting people to constantly remind you of the ignore function, along with statements of how that's just the way things are. Instead I've seen people agreeing that these loudmouth idiots are stupid and aren't worth the time it takes to kill them. Given how oddly bitter that sounded, I suppose I'm a little weird for knowing that such a sentiment warms my heart, but still. |

meh. gender is irrelevant. skill is relevant. you a girl? neat. can you shoot/toss out equipment/pilot a vehicle? that's the important question here.

Solution: create a custom chat channel and invite players you know to be respectable to join. The channels you join will always be there even when you log back in. You can even give them passwords. Join a corporation with strict guidelines on age/behavior. I have teenage boys in my corp that have more maturity than I did when I was their age. It'll take some work, but it's definitely possible. |
