Where does this misguided notion that we are brutal masters. Emperor Heideran VII stated that slaves must be treated fairly, a sentiment our current Empress shares. Um ... interestingly, Mr. Echo, the freed Matari who returned to the Republic very frequently retain the Amarrian faith, even if they still hold some Matari identity. This has been causing some tension with their neighbors and relatives, apparently.

More generally-- you're not wrong that the Amarr faith is aggressive, which makes them somewhat dangerous people to live near if you don't share their religion. However, there do seem to be quite a few-- likely even a majority-- who genuinely see slavery as a sort of spiritual apprenticeship.

There's nothing especially hypocritical about it; they think they're doing you a favor if they conquer and enslave you. The fact that they mostly think it's for your own good, however, doesn't make it much less worrying.

As for why they associate with the Caldari, neither the State nor the Empire cares to face both the Republic and Federation alone-- which they would be doing if they parted company. More broadly, the Empire and State each appreciates the other's comparatively orderly, conservative culture. They're not the same, and, in the long run, maybe not even compatible as neighbors in the absence of bigger problems on each empire's borders, but it's more than enough to cement relations comfortably.
