Its almost been a year now..... since I got the game I mean. Ive been through so much of it, and the game is still going.
I was there for the zero hit-detection days. Back when HMG's were the only things you could use because they were the only weapon that could shell out enough bullets to actually get hits on people. Well..... HMG's or the dredded swarm launcher. Lol, they swarmed you alright. A dumb fire rocket that had 300 + splash damage per missile, and did almost zero damage to the user no matter how close he was.
I remember when the SP system was still under diminishing returns and you could make as much SP as you could fit into the three hour time frame after it reset every 8:00 PM before you inevitably ran out of time and the returns would drop down to almost zero.
Then they introduced the weekly diminishing returns. This was even better because you'd have to go about 4-5 days after you hit your cap making about 1 SP per game no matter how well you did.
Im talking days back when it was possible to make 200k SP per match if you were on at the right time and did well enough.
This was also a time when Voice chat didn't work and Squads weren't around so what we did at STB was talk over Ventrillo and join the same matches together (cuz you could choose which matches you wanted to join back then).
I was there when you could glitch Vehicles so that if you called one in, the servers wouldn't take it right and continue sending in Bollus's with whatever you called in over and over again. Imagine..... someone glitches their tank, and within two minutes theres a legitimate mountain of tanks piled up on the outside of the communication compound. That happened.
Then they introduced the Super tank...... My god it was awful. STB coined the nickname "tank spammers" during this period. Between Ted nugget, Rage wardog, lurchassaurus, Dr Skurlock, and many others we would roam into pub matches and well..... it wasn't really fun on the receiving end. At the time tanks had STUPID amounts of health. Like.... over 9000! And missiles were the God mode of that era. Splash damage made it impossible to fight them as infantry. Well CCP swung the nerf hammer hard on them didn't they? So hard that the effects can still be felt today.......
It was around this time (I think) that CCP introduced corps..... lol it was nice to finally have one.
Then it was all about dropships..... with tanks gone dropships roamed the skys. Their gunners, going easily 40-0 in matches. This was because CCP only nerfed large missiles, Dropships had amazing accuracy and great DPS. Well it wasn't long before those got nerfed.
Other then that we had Skirmish 1.0 which was fun in its own way (and much better for PC btw.....)
LOL once upon a time you could chuck a limitless amount of AV nades on the ground and they wouldn't ever disappear. So basically...... FREE AV MINES EVERYWHERE!!!!! lol, that was fun.
Then came the laser rifle..... ah that was my baby. That got introduced in chromosome I think? it may have been the patch before that. and I picked it up about three days after their release. Another day or two of figuring out the gun and how it worked and I was golden, this was the first time I ever transitioned away from AR's and my god was it amazing when I hit proto level........ lol so OP.
Anyway they eventually destroyed the controls and I had to get used to it again, once I figured that out things were good..... uh what else? Forge gun spam? lol, people would go to that four letter map on the towers using Dropships and just forge people from across the map. This prompted the DS flight ceiling being introduced, along with a reduced splash damage to forge guns. I believe there was also a period where snipers were crazy..... but I cant remember.
The hit detection was still bad then, but what can you do right?
Then the open beta hit.... our characters got wiped but we were given a 1 week headstart and a chance to buy BPO AUR stuff DIRT CHEAP. like...... militia shield extender BPO's for 30 AUR. (of course they didn't tell us that though, so many people just bought what they needed at the time). and the SVER suits for like 10k AUR......
Lol the open beta was nice..... Then they had the release and uprising came with it. My god did they crap on the controls..... and this time I couldn't figure it out..... But its gotten a little better with patches I suppose. Laser rifles are on the endangered species list with only a few true veterans sticking with it. I did the math and only with proficiency 5 and damage mods stacked on brings the PROTO laser back to the Base damage it used to have before uprising....... it makes me sad.
LAV's now seem to run the show with crazy Tank and a relatively low SP investment to do so (about 200k SP gets you into a logi LAV). Tanks can be tough but are super easy to kill if your specialized and other then that? well...... idk. Flaylocks are dumb..... SR's are decent. The AR is still solid. and now were just waiting for the next build.

Gunloggi with over 10k shields, resistance mods were way more effective back then...it was nuts. I also remember there used to be a hell of a lot more forge guns back then too, but those tanks still wouldn't go down.
I remember having over 10 million SP at the end of my first month.

I miss Skirmish 1.0, it gave me hope that this game would be like MAG in terms of the kinds of game modes that it would offer, then CCP took that hope away from me. I remember suicide killing with the swarm launcher once, I'm sure it could kill the user. I hated the diminishing returns so much. I miss the militia items all being BPOs, including vehicles. I miss the massive mountains of tanks. I miss the easy dropship controls. I miss the mass driver and laser rifle not being complete jokes.
Controls were never good. I remember when you couldn't cancel reloading with melee, and lots of stupid crap like that. |

controls have always been terrible - from replication onwards. People are now reminiscing about chromosone's but the reality is they were terrible then (and before).
Also, CCP nerfed the speed out of the game - reducing it every build -making it a slow moving game. (rumour has it they nerfed the speed to in an attempt tp improve hit detection - but I am not a programmer so I don't know if this is true). |

LOL the inability to cancel reload animations was awful.... Now I dislike how the animation will finnish, but the number wont update until a second afterward, so if you sprint its as if the reload didn't happen but it looks like the reload did happen..... just annoying. |

Look sinboto..... I didn't want to tell you this but im the head of a small government party that's sole purpose is to cover up the knowledge of the LR's true powers. You see..... what was released back then was all prototype technology. We had originally intended to release a much weaker version and add on to the power little by little over time, but somebody leaked its true power on day 1. This has set us back considerably due to new laws mandating LR's have limiters hard-built into them as a standard practice...... Thus my foundation started up the CULT (Cover Up Laser Technology) Committee in an effort to reverse the damage that was dealt to us. Now what im telling you already is highly classified, but rest assured..... the LR will rise again, and when it does, Light, medium, and Heavy suits will all fear it again. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA PREPARE YOURSELVS FOR YOUR DOOMS APROACH YOU!!!!! |

Nothing like parking your (easy to fly) dropship at the top of the building of the 4 letter map and spamming missiles with huge splash damage all around, or making our enemy suffer at their spawning point since there was no huge redline to help them, spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn, die on a barrage of vehicles and snipers.

I still remember spawning in literally the exact same spot at each spawn. I remember when strafe speeds were so high and hit detection was so low that the game seemed more like DDR 514. I remember when remote explosives were combat weapons. I remember being an immortal scout with just garbage gear because hit detection was so bad. I remember making more SP than I knew what to do with. I remember NULL cannons that could be taken out by tanks and AV with ease, on the only progression based map we've seen so far (Crater Lake).
Back then if you died while shooting, you'd continue to shoot as you fell down and layed on the ground until you emptied your clip; I miss that so damn much. I remember watching the MCC move. I remember getting a system freeze every single time I played anything other than Ambush :/ I remember the original textures and blocky / pasty suits. I remember STB and raging at them for their tank use. I remember when dropships were laughably easy to fly, and took basically no impact damage; DEATH FROM ABOVE (the true DUST bunnies). I remember when dropship controls were initially changed, that was hilarious and also induced much rage from me.
I remember when CRUs were little, and you could stand inside turret installations at a control panel. I remember flux grenades that would slaughter you, and the first time fused grenades were ever introduced. I remember losing all my stuffs to yet another character reset.
Lots of remembering. Ahh, nostalgia. |

Codex was the build when I really got into dust; I played in the builds before that, but I had no idea what I was doing (btw, laser rifles were released in codex)
And DAMN was codex imbalanced. That was when dropships couldn't be touched (yet destroyed everyone they flew above), and ARs had scopes, no recoil, and the accuracy of a laser rifle.
There was also the testers' tournament in codex, which (looking back ) was complete bullshit anyway since it was just a competition of who uses the OP stuff more (the winning corp was supposedly using 2 godmode gunships as opposed to the other team's 1)
You also forgot that when corps first came out, eve players could join and transfer a ridiculous amount of ISK, so CCP ended up patching that and doing an ISK/asset reset on everyone. |

I remember hearing about DUST 514 years ago- and knew right away that I would be buying a PS3 just to play it.
I havent played console games in almost a decade, not since FFX, GTA Vice city and Gran Turismo 3.
I sent in my beta code request, but as an EVE player I got a code soon after anyway.
I knew I would get my ass handed to me, not being a FPS player, and when I started playing, I did
I remember playing on my CRT TV with my roommates, and handing the controller over to my Halo-playing buddy- and watching how he played.
I remember when I finally started going positive in my KDR
I remember finding a corp for the first time.
I remember doing really well with the AR, then CCP bringing the Iron sight changes and my crybaby rage
I remember speccing into logi, and the ridiculous WP factory that they used to be...
I remember the bomb-fest that the MD used to be in certain situations (on top of the dish)

I'm looking forward to speccing into minmatar assault, and running dual-slaylock

There was nothing balanced about replication...... it was either "you had the heavy or you lost"...... AR's were a joke back then, and so was hit detection.... |

Azura Sakura wrote:Oh man. I was there for the Super tanks too! Once you mentioned Ted Nugget, that brought back bad memories because that's the reason why I quit Dust. Because of all the those tanks completely made the game boring. I even spec into AV that build but I was like the only 1 each time trying to forge gun the bastards lol. Also remember all the post STB made durning that time, was really fun reading those
Lol I remember what you mean..... times were..... fun back then. Though infuriating too because of the tank. Literally, I remember the devs had a match against the players and they got redlined via tank spam. LOL |

Scheneighnay McBob wrote:Codex was the build when I really got into dust; I played in the builds before that, but I had no idea what I was doing (btw, laser rifles were released in codex)
That's the one! Yeah..... lol thanks for the correction. And your right, that build went through sooooo many nerfs it wasn't even funny |

My favorite memory was being able to swarm launcher the MCC down before any of the red dots got close enough to kill me in skirm 1.0. I'd like to see that mode make a comeback as Onslaught or named something similar. I don't want it to be that simple to kill the MCC either though. Everything should damage the MCC's, but I don't think anything should beat all the null cannons in a stage. |

You forgot one of the most important things imo. Character movement. Yes your characters base movement used to be super fast, and way more fun. It felt a lot like old socom or mag. But same story as now, Babies couldnt shoot for crap with the ps controller so speed was nerfed. Hmm now that i think about it i have never seen a game nerfed so much from what the dev had originally intended. |

Seamie Schmoove wrote:Invalid fits anyone??? Jesus even remembering it is making me clench my teeth... Those red letters haunt my dreams. Seems like you could never get more than about 3 games back to back without invalid fittings ruining all your fun.
I also enjoyed that one bug where I don't remember what caused it but the game would hang on the spinning circle when looking for battle. Seems like if you opened up the market before going in to match you could see if something had loaded or not, and if it hadn't that means you'd get that error. But you could fix by opening up the leaderbaords and waiting a minute for them to load and then find a battle by using that terminal you had to walk a few steps to get to because if you went through the NEOCOM it's lock the game up on you. Details are off but that's pretty much how that went every match for a while.
And as much as I hated those damn dropships I was still out there every match being the only one it seemed like with my forge trying to kill them. I kind of enjoyed the suspens of it like I finally got the bastard...but then I'd get two shotted by the missles while the DS slowly went in circles. Eventually they'd have to go to the redzone and rep before coming back. Honestly doing that day in and day out did a lot for my forge gun aim. |
