It still feels like MMO to me because of the large-scaled maps. Actually, they're gonna bring in at least 15,000 maps. That's large enough for me. Just wait, it will expand.

People are gonna make the argument that the SP system is pretty deep already when in reality it is just a grind straight to the Caldari Logi LOL.
Also, people will say that there is MMO features in it, but PC is really just a more easily seen form of displaying win loss ratios for corporations... it really is a bare bones system atm and lacks any real MMO strategy or tactics... |

Because they couldn't render the spaceships without setting your PS3 on fire.
But seriously IWS, it doesn't actually affect the game play unless you force it to, like achievements in CoD. |

Totally agree, an MMO is a game with a persistent world and a large number of players able to all interact within the same game space.
The issue, of course, is there is no true definition to 'large number of players'.
However, I feel like the community has reached a somewhat unspoken cut off of around 1000 simultaneous players in a game space before you can call it an MMO.
This is a lobby shooter, and is no more MMO than call of duty or battlefield is.
An RPG or levelling aspect to your game does not make it an MMO.
This is an FPSRPG, not an MMOFPS or an MMORPG.
To IWS: You cannot point to squares in the sky and call this game an MMO, im sorry but that is just flat out dumb of you to even attempt to argue. Those squares up there do not interact with the gamespace AT ALL. You cannot consider the failed mechanic of orbital strikes as bridge which links the two games' gamespace and say that any particular battle has hundreds to thousands of ships participating in our FW or PC battle. |

I'd like to see a more prolonged game modes -- once Null Sec comes into play -- that take full advantage of the entire map size and are capped at typical server capacities: around 2000 players. Time frame for a single game would be about a week on average.
That'd be more like an MMO.

Seems to me that planetary control is persistent and involves a large number of people. Some of those corporations and coalitions are pretty large. I'd also say that while not integrated to much of a degree today that EVE qualifies as an MMO and does already have some integration.
Now, I'd also suggest that MMO's don't always have persistent actions. For example, back when I played WoW you could take any number of characters through and they'd all see basically the same thing. Resources and so forth simply regenerated so a later user would have the same experience.
Also, to avoid the fanboy crap, I realize there are plenty of issues that we all would like addressed, blah blah blah. My comments are generally defending against ridiculous attacks -- not trying to suggest the current state of the game is the pinnacle of achievement or anything like that.
If you can't tell the difference between the two you are stupid, so shut up. |

This is an FPSRPG, not an MMOFPS or an MMORPG.
An MMO is exactly what the words mean. A Massive Multiplayer Online game.
CoD is an MMO, Ultima Online is an MMO, the Texas Holdem Poker game on your andriod or iphone is an MMO.
There are currently a number of browser based games that are MMOs, as well as a snowboarding game that is an MMO.
ANY game that has a large number of people playing together simultaenously is an MMO. Hence the phrase "Massive Multiplayer Online".
CoD = MMO that is an FPS. WoW = MMO that is an RPG. DragonPlay Texas Holdem = MMO that is a card game.
Dust 514 = MMO that is an FPS.
Knowing the definition of words is commonly taught from the 1st grade onward.
P.S. OP - Yea, a 16x16 battle isn't massive. The 100 games of 16x16 player battles happening simultaenously is though. With your logic, doing a dungeon in World of Warcraft isn't considered part of the MMO experience. |

Those 16v16 games do not interact with each other, and each world is not persistent, as the world is deleted once the match is over.
1000 lobbies does not make it MMO. The term defines number of players in a single game world, not in 1000 separate and not persisting game worlds.
You can argue PC is a step in the right direction, but its not quite there, and each match deletes the game world when it's over, there is no persistence game to game.
Call of duty is not an MMO, I don't think anyone has ever argued that before or agrees with you.

MAG makes your excuse seem silly. Very silly.
It's kind of sad that a shooter claiming to be an MMO would release onto the PS3 over THREE FULL YEARS after MAG...... then pretty much whine that the difficulties of spawning 48 measly players on one map were too great to overcome before launch day.
Still waiting on those 48-player maps CCP. Back in MAG we called anything under 64 players a n00b map, only suitable for small-scale runnin gunnin TDM style newbie stomping (no platoon or company sized goodness). Then, the decent sized maps started at 96 players to 128 to 256. Just sayin.... |

When I first started playing Dust a few weeks ago, I felt pretty stupid because of this. I'd already told irl friends and coworkers that Dust had such a feature, only to find out that I was 100% wrong when I started to play the game for myself.
At least, I didn't make the mistake of personally recommending the game beforehand. Would of lost tons of cred had I done that.... |

1 - I never argued CoD was an MMO, i made a statement. You seem to want to argue CoD not being an MMO, which you can continue to do so since it never started with me, and i have no reason to enter into an argument i care nothing about.
2 - instead of quoting a collection of opinions that don't need to provide a shred of evidence to post said opinions....you quote 3 more collections.
You proved your point well.

Actually the smallest match in MAG were the 64 player game modes. Suppression and Sabotage, the former being the noob fodder training mode TDM game while the latter was pretty much what most people played overall.
As for Dust being an FPS MMO, the "persistent world" was never going to be the combat maps, but the PC system and fact that we share the same space as Eve players. So yea, that right there makes this game into the quasi-MMO it was claimed to be. However I certainly agree everything needs to be bigger overall. As of now, the Maps are already large enough to host far more players then currently available but I guess mechanical issues are still preventing the increase in player count. Just the 'simple' act of making the fights bigger would certainly help boost the fun factor of the game as a whole imo (as long as it runs smooth and is balanced well).
As for character depth, there certainly is a good amount of options out right now, more are always nice though but I'm sure that stuff is coming eventually (we've already seen concept art of many of the still unreleased suits, weapons, and vehicles and no good MMO releases all it's gear at the start). Hopefully this depth grows deeper as well as wider, not only coming out with different weapons and vehicles, but also adding to the specializations of the current line up of gear and transport we already have. More role specific suit skills (AV Caldari Assault or melee specific Minimatar Scout Suits to skill into) so players who already know and like what they're already running with can just get better at running with their current stuff. New guns and suits are great, but if we already really like older stuff, then new things just don't really help much.
Though I personally feel that the biggest improvement needed in this game right now (outside of mechanical fixes and gear balancing) is the addition of actually new game modes. When push comes to shove, all we have is TDM and Control Points, and after a while they get boring. PC matches especially need to feel different and unique and should not just be the same Skirmish mode and matches we've been playing since the closed Beta. PC fights are attack/defend battles and the gameplay should reflect that notion. More variety in the actual game modes alone would be a HUGE boon to the game as a whole and is something that should have already been addressed and added.
More info about the eventual PvE mode would also be really appreciated, especially if it as well had some sort of Persistence to it. If this game is to be heralded a persistent world (universe) MMO, players need to see that their actions do indeed achieve something in said world. Planetary Conquest is certainly good in that regard, but it's generally seen as the "End Game" content of this MMO, something only few will actively be able to participate in on a consistent basis. Adding the PvE mode, tying it into unclaimed planets through out the Eve universe and making it available for all players to participate in would suddenly give all players the ability to see the persistent universe they're playing in. Something like joining a mission on an unclaimed world and unexpectedly running into other players who are also undertaking this same mission would bring a lot more life to this game as it would show people that these planets are something they can access and step foot on outside of "Us v Them" fights or random Pub Matches.
Now I'm sure there's still plenty of new content Coming SoonGäó but right now it certainly feels like no one's really listening. The first few months of an MMO's launch is always rough and often underwhelming compared to people's expectations, so communication with the player base is extremely vital. If players feel the Devs don't care while the game is new, they won't be as willing to sit through the rocky first year to get to where the game finally starts reaching it's stride. Personally, I really do hope that many of the promises already made, and most of the issues currently wrong with the game will be addressed and that Dust really does become the massive persistent universe shooter it was billed as being. Despite the current problems facing the game and all the complaining I've done so far, I really do actually enjoy Dust and the universe of New Eden and I'm hoping I'll get to be apart of it for a long time to come, with boots on the ground and gun at the ready. |

I honestly dont think this game will live to be able to be an actual MMO or even a "great game". So far i have not seen anything impressive as far as MMO standards yet because PC is a joke pretty much right now. You fight against another corp in another country such as Russia or Japan from U.S., your going to lose due to lag. Not to mention what will deliver the final blow to this game will be the PS4. Dust will lose its main player base and will not have the hundreds of thousands of players it needs to be able to open up the rest of the PC map and be ready for an open market. I can't see this game competing with Planetside 2 on the PS4 at all. |
