Actually the smallest match in MAG were the 64 player game modes. Suppression and Sabotage, the former being the noob fodder training mode TDM game while the latter was pretty much what most people played overall.
As for Dust being an FPS MMO, the "persistent world" was never going to be the combat maps, but the PC system and fact that we share the same space as Eve players. So yea, that right there makes this game into the quasi-MMO it was claimed to be. However I certainly agree everything needs to be bigger overall. As of now, the Maps are already large enough to host far more players then currently available but I guess mechanical issues are still preventing the increase in player count. Just the 'simple' act of making the fights bigger would certainly help boost the fun factor of the game as a whole imo (as long as it runs smooth and is balanced well).
As for character depth, there certainly is a good amount of options out right now, more are always nice though but I'm sure that stuff is coming eventually (we've already seen concept art of many of the still unreleased suits, weapons, and vehicles and no good MMO releases all it's gear at the start). Hopefully this depth grows deeper as well as wider, not only coming out with different weapons and vehicles, but also adding to the specializations of the current line up of gear and transport we already have. More role specific suit skills (AV Caldari Assault or melee specific Minimatar Scout Suits to skill into) so players who already know and like what they're already running with can just get better at running with their current stuff. New guns and suits are great, but if we already really like older stuff, then new things just don't really help much.
Though I personally feel that the biggest improvement needed in this game right now (outside of mechanical fixes and gear balancing) is the addition of actually new game modes. When push comes to shove, all we have is TDM and Control Points, and after a while they get boring. PC matches especially need to feel different and unique and should not just be the same Skirmish mode and matches we've been playing since the closed Beta. PC fights are attack/defend battles and the gameplay should reflect that notion. More variety in the actual game modes alone would be a HUGE boon to the game as a whole and is something that should have already been addressed and added.
More info about the eventual PvE mode would also be really appreciated, especially if it as well had some sort of Persistence to it. If this game is to be heralded a persistent world (universe) MMO, players need to see that their actions do indeed achieve something in said world. Planetary Conquest is certainly good in that regard, but it's generally seen as the "End Game" content of this MMO, something only few will actively be able to participate in on a consistent basis. Adding the PvE mode, tying it into unclaimed planets through out the Eve universe and making it available for all players to participate in would suddenly give all players the ability to see the persistent universe they're playing in. Something like joining a mission on an unclaimed world and unexpectedly running into other players who are also undertaking this same mission would bring a lot more life to this game as it would show people that these planets are something they can access and step foot on outside of "Us v Them" fights or random Pub Matches.
Now I'm sure there's still plenty of new content Coming SoonGäó but right now it certainly feels like no one's really listening. The first few months of an MMO's launch is always rough and often underwhelming compared to people's expectations, so communication with the player base is extremely vital. If players feel the Devs don't care while the game is new, they won't be as willing to sit through the rocky first year to get to where the game finally starts reaching it's stride. Personally, I really do hope that many of the promises already made, and most of the issues currently wrong with the game will be addressed and that Dust really does become the massive persistent universe shooter it was billed as being. Despite the current problems facing the game and all the complaining I've done so far, I really do actually enjoy Dust and the universe of New Eden and I'm hoping I'll get to be apart of it for a long time to come, with boots on the ground and gun at the ready. |
