I feel it's a shame that CCP didn't stick with the philosophy of EVE and simply have passive SP accumulation only. They did this to remove the "taskmaster macros" of early MMORPGs where you'd AFK with a skill accumulating macro.
I know a lot of people will go "but that means that the new guys don't stand a chance!", but that's bullshit. People are AFKing now to hit the cap each week so in a sense we're "all" (many/most) accumulating the same amount of SP every week, leaving us in the same position as a passive only accumulation would.
This would remove AFKing
I understand that CCP is doubling it's booster sales with active and passive SP accumulation so it's a monetary incentive for them. But I feel people might simply use the booster for longer with this lower SP accumulation. I personally will be using active and passive boosters until I hit a point where I feel that for my main playstyle I am in a good place i.e. I have a "corp battle protobear" setup as well as a "regular" and "cheap". After that point I might keep a single booster on to skill up for a secondary playstyle. But I have an alt under some rock that's passively skilling up for a totally different playstyle I want to try/enjoy.
I do understand also the preference of front-end-load on return on investment for CCP where they have most of their sales happen earlier to recoup investment faster. But this could affect people's enjoyment of the game if the system around it can be broken (MCC AFKing).
Wouldn't it be great to join a match and see people play for the simple reason that they want to play to win? |

No reward points after battle = no reason to play imo. Points give me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Take Battlefield for example when you earn a bunch of medals after a good match. K/D ratio and ISK aren't enough reasons to try hard in a match, I want points dude POINTS. |

You must be new to FPSs. Points and character progression are a very new phenomenon in FPSs - and not a welcome one for me. It does make sense in an MMOFPS, though.
Nevertheless, if you need points to feel motivated to play Dust (or any other FPS), you probably won't last long. Melting faces should be motivation enough. |

All FPS have some kind of progression system dude, unless you're talking about +10 year old games. Even America's Army had one, where you had to actually train to use things. |

I didn't talked about passive SP. Since you mentioned it imo matches should reward very little passive SP or none at all. Take for example a Battlefield match participation medal, it rewards like 200 XP, very little compared to the high amount of XP you need to level up. + BF does it smart by only unlocking things with the use of things, meaning you can't upgrade jets if you're only using ARs, etc.

I don't need active SP. ISK, and effects of my efforts in a persistent universe (the upcoming planetary conquest, and faction warfare) is all I think Dust need. Games shouldn't need points to motivate you to play, gameplay itself should be the reward (in public matches). I don't understand it when people stop playing a game simply because there is nothing else to unlock, or no more points to gain, it saddens me that this is what gaming is becoming about. |

I believe that active SP is bad. Active SP makes grinders and then the game has no point next to grinding out SP. There is no passion in a game of grinders. We should want to play because we want to change something about the universe not because we want a better suit. Fame and fortune should be the reason not SP. |

People just like to be rewarded for their actions. Almost all multiplayer games have some kind of progression based on match performance, it's not limited to FPS. I don't know the gameplay mechanics of EVE but I could guess it has other incentives that makes you continue to play it. I'm guessing ISK is much more important there than in Dust. |

I feel that active SP gain in DUST is necessary. It allows a feel of progression in the game and rewards those that put effort in it. There may be those who afk farm -BUT- they lose out on ISK and SP bonuses from combat and WP accrual. I love EVE, but EVE is NOT a FPS. You will bleed dry the player base without some sense of gain per combat scenario. |

I personally wish we had a 100% passive SP system but this is because I'm an Eve-vet and work 10+ hours a day. I simply don't have the time to hit the cap every day and still maintain some semblance of a social life. This puts me at a disadvantage because real life.

There is soooo much wrong in this thread. I can't even believe that people are supporting the OP. We have to stop trying to turn dust into eve. Dust is an fps....eve is an mmo...let it go.
If active skill points became "deactivated", the playerbase would be lower than it is....significantly lower. There is nothing to do right now but pub matches. Not too many people will log on everyday to play pub matches with Dust's gameplay. Sure, you'd get rid of afk farming if you removed active skill point accrual but you will lose playerbase just the same.
What you should really ask is if the skill point cap is good or bad for the game. Because active skill point accrual is an imperative.

I agree passive only would be the best for me
Its less about keeping it fair and not having the time its more about getting rid the AFK players and removing the grind
i want to play because i enjoy the game, now im finding im playing purely for the skill points and when im at cap i don't see a reason to carry on playing and move to another toon
We should be playing for the fun and for the isk, personally i would like to see the points award to be loyalty points for the faction your working for and then have our own point store (it does not have to be called loyalty points can be called store credit)
used to buy faction gear / vanity gear that we can sell on or use etc when the market opens up |

It's not that I care about people AFKing in the MCC, I'm just tired of having to AFK there MYSELF to keep up with the SP accumulation. I don't have enough time to play enough to cap SP but since I'm working from home I can keep DUST on and AFK in the MCC. I'd prefer just playing for fun and not grind.
I in the beginning thought you could either use a passive booster to gain 80K-ish extra SP a week OR (not both) an active booster that allowed you about 15K more SP a week if you capped. I was fine with being 15K behind a week without grinding, but I do feel I'm getting left behind if I'm falling behind at close to 400K a month (for the first few months, this will not matter after some time).
But I understand the "instant gratification" point of view of rewards equal to effort with regards to matches. As there is currently very little to spend ISK on apart from protobearing in pub matches (a WASTE of ISK), there's not much satisfaction in banking millions of ISK now and people want something more valuable for their efforts, namely SP. |

The reward for the battles will be your corp/alliance name on the persistent universe.
SP will only get you so far, and after the "main" build is ok, the rest of the time will be only "Meh, where should i spend all this?"

Why do you say "New Eden"? Dust is also a part of New Eden, Dust has an Active SP system, and not everyone who plays will give a **** about faction warfare, lore, or any of that other EVE stuff.
If there's people who care about "gold stars" then Dust will suit them just fine.

I say "New Eden" because it contains Dust, EVE, and possibly more games in the future, just like you reiterated.
Yes, it has an active SP system, i didn-¦t mention anything about it, for i-¦m fond of this mixed system as it is. (Even with the afk people)
I-¦m not saying people will care about FW, Lore or something about EVE. I don-¦t care what they care about.
What i do care, is the hability to harvest tears from the players, to destroy what they care about, to go to their quiet little safespot, their pretty little sandcastle, and simply smash it, because i can do this.
It is not due to social inability, it is not to "ruin" their game, it is not to make them quit.
It-¦s to make them realize, hell, to make them live the inconstancy of life, to know it is aleatory, that there are no "safe" places, that their security is an illusion that can be ruined with a simple gesture.
Is to invite them to grow with this experience and become stronger by it.
A lot of people won-¦t see it that way, but those few that do, it-¦s amazing to watch them transform and become "more than they were".
The guy so scared of being locked on a gate camp that his voice trembled on TS, becoming a kick-kitten FC and leading a full group of newbies. The girl that was scared of your voice, damn, of her own voice, becoming pro-active, shouting instructions to people and making things happen. This is awesome stuff to be part of.
Growth is pain. Is leaving stuff behind. Is changing.
I didn-¦t wish to invalidate your form of gratification, and i-¦ll repeat again, i know people have different forms of gratification. Of course Alliance/Corporation stuff is one form of golden star, everything is a form of scooby-snack.
Mine is to invite people to change, and if Dust follows the hardcore mode of New Eden, then it wil lmean that there-¦ll be plenty of opportunities to destroy everything you care for, and hope that you-¦ll rise stronger by it and make your move to shape the universe the way you want it to be.
