If active skill points became "deactivated", the playerbase would be lower than it is....significantly lower. There is nothing to do right now but pub matches. Not too many people will log on everyday to play pub matches with Dust's gameplay. Sure, you'd get rid of afk farming if you removed active skill point accrual but you will lose playerbase just the same.
What you should really ask is if the skill point cap is good or bad for the game. Because active skill point accrual is an imperative.
Edit: Bluedots man :/ Agreed, Ydubbs - losing active skillpoint gain would lose players, and is imperitive. Also, I think a sp cap is equally important.
But, in defence of the OP, what is actually being criticized is the passive component of match rewards, and the natural roll-on effect: the need for MCC afking.
I agree with the OP's motivations but not his solution.
I've been struggling with contradictory beliefs: that an fps should have primarily active sp rewards but at the same time I find myself thinking 'if sp were all passive we wouldn't be dealing with this AFK bullshit'. But that's just a knee-jerk reaction on my part.
In the long run, all-passive skillpoint accrual is the easy answer but not the right one. A dynamic hardcore mmofps like DUST aspires to be demands pure active sp accrual in match. Steady passive time-based sp tickover is fine as a mechanic to accomodate a broad playerbase with varying RL commitments, but match rewards need to reflect activity and contributions.
What I'd like to see is what several other peeps have proposed:
1) Passive tickover for everybody worth maybe 75% of possible max sp accrual. Boostable(independent rate and cap boosters).
2) Active accrual only for in-match actions(Zero & negative sp for a match is possible). Boostable(independent rate and cap boosters).
3) Passive sp can be spent anywhere, because this is the machines force-feeding knowledge into you clonebrain.
4) Active sp can also be spent anywhere, but get derated if you spend them in branches of the skilltree separated from the branch you earned them in. More separation = more derating. And, no, this is not hard to track. It would be nice to avoid a guy who's whole life is spent spamming RE's becoming a highly skilled forge gunner without ever having picked one up and faced off against T-Brown or Lurch, for example.
5) Rasatsu's log-damped rewards from a sp-pool-with-rollover reward mechanic. This is the most balanced, natural, intuitive solution to the active sp vs. sp cap dilemma. It allows mercs to get ahead through contributing more, and allows us to make rational decisions on how many sp our RL time is worth.
That's enough to keep me happily immersed in New Eden forever. |
