lol When I said "creepy" I meant the dudes who don't actually identify as female, but just want to be in the channel to be creepers. I don't think I've run across creepers in LFSquad, but that's because they're all looking for a squad. |

The difference between sexism and feminism is that sexism was formed to separate men and women based on the idea that "men are better than women", while feminism is based on the idea that "women are equal to men". It's not sexist that I've created a separate channel for women. I did it because I'm tired of males coming on to me in-game because I am a female, acting like I have to be waaaay better (or a lot freaking worse) than them because I am a female, calling me foul words and saying I belong in a kitchen because I am a female, [I could continue this list] and I believe other women feel my pain.
PLEASE let me know NOW that males get this same **** online and I will delete my channels. I'm not saying all males are douche bags, a-holes, stupid, or any other negative thing. I care about too many people to ever generalize any of them. I'm not saying all females are saints either (****, I'm not and I know too many who aren't). I just want to get to the comradeship part without being eroticized. I don't expect every woman to be heterosexual because I'm not, but I do expect to be respected since I'm giving that same respect. Female gamers give me that regardless of sexuality. |

I probably wouldn't even bother explaining the nuances of patriarchy to most of the forumgoers, you'll wind up bogged down in semantics rather than the reality of the situation.
The responses I am anticipating to this explanation include "but not all guys are like that, you're generalising!", "sexism works both ways!" and "I'm one of the nice guys!", totally oblivious to the tried and true tropes they are trotting out.
The overwhelming majority of the people you are explaining this to are positively affected by the situation giving them no reason to put any thought into it and plenty of reason to ignore it. If they want to educate themselves, the internets are FULL of resources to do so. |

Speaking very roughly, because I have some faith in your ability to engage on the topic (though a long conversation about it probably doesn't belong here), sexism, like racism, when spoken about academically are a combination of prejudice towards a particular group and the power to act upon that prejudice.
It's pretty easy, as a guy, to be totally oblivious to the power that our Western society allows us to exert, comparative to a woman of otherwise equal social status... because experience has taught us that it's just how things work.

I said the second one just to make the point, and i am well aware that while it works both ways the majority of traffic is one way EDIT:agreed if we start talking in depth on it it'll turn into a threadnaught, but you're right as a guy i have very little idea what it must be like for a woman in our society but you can get an idea just by looking at the most common stereotypes and the various jokes (make me a sandwich, get in the kitchen etc). And just from looking at how some male players behave towards female ones its just shameful and disgusting. |

If the idea behind feminism is equality then segregation of the player base doesn't help. I'm sure that those kind of people have plenty of problems to be sexist behind the internet (low self esteem, unattractive, etc.) So I say you should return every low blow with one of your own, besides, you know what to say to a man to crush their self esteem correct? However, if it's just someone trolling (as in not a true sexist) your idea is better because trolls feed on that stuff (So delicious tears!). |

Valencia, I didn't see a point of two channels, so I have closed mine. Judging by the responses in this thread, I am sure there are a lot of immature boys who will try to infiltrate your channel. I hope you had an EVE character create your channel so they could kick members.

I can understand why it may be difficult for a female gamer nowadays.
I have only run into a couple female gamers in public matches and damn can they run their mouths off. I guess they had to develop a thick skin in order to combat the insensitivity some guys expressed when faced with a female. Almost as if they had never spoken to a female in their lives before... I am certain that their are many more female players but they prefer to just leave their mics turned off. It really is a shame. Even though society had equal rights, and anything a male can do on this game can be accomplished by any female. females are still treated as second class citizens in the gaming community.
As a guy, I rarely get disrespected in such a way that a female would be disrespected. I do run into other guys who brag about themselves, challenge me, challenge my corp, even curse at me. And that is all fine. This is all apart of the competition of the game and I enjoy it.
But what I would not enjoy is being told to get into the kitchen. Being in the war room trying to see who im playing against and being humped by 5 guys because I'm in a female scout suit. Calling out objectives and positions on my mic and then being hit on ingame or insulted based on my gender.
This problem does not only exist in the game world but it also exists in society. I have alot of lesbian friends and I cant really say im surprised that they enjoy the company and touch of a woman more. They show me the texts random guys send them on their phones/facebook. Its ridiculous. Before that I had never realized there was a problem. Guys can be outright rude and creepy. My female friends can reject them but they never stop harassing them.
I don't think its no longer about equal rights. Women can do anything a guy can do. Laws are set in place to disallow discriminating against gender.Although I do not think the fight for equal rights is over, especially around the world, I think our next focus should be on equal respect. |

I only turn my mic on in squad, but sometimes the squad leader forgets to lock the squad and we have randoms join. That hasn't really been an issue for me though (I've met some really awesome people through random squads - *cough*Jane*cough*).
This one time, I had one guy join and proceed to immediately FREAK OUT saying "OMG OMG OMG OMG..! ARE YOU A GIRL?!" I swear he was hyperventilating. We are not rare and mythical unicorns - come on, just take a look outside.
My squad leader said something to the effect of "No, he's just a young boy."
It was pretty hilarious.
I count myself among one of the lucky ones on Dust (and in FPS games in general) who hasn't been the target of very many sexist / offensive remarks, but I know that it does exist and it happens quite frequently to others. What Valencia and a few others have said is correct... There is definitely a difference between getting harrassed for being a scrub or how you play the game and getting harrassed based on your gender. If you can't tell the difference between the two, then you are part of the problem. |

I really wish you had done this on a female gamer website so I didn't have to see this.
This is pretty sexist to be honest. Intolerance in any form infuriates me. I don't care if females are a minority in gamer circles, they shouldn't get special treatment. No-one should.
We are all brothers and sisters together.
Integration not segregation.
Okay, I'm done pontificating.

Sorry, but it IS rare. I'm not saying what happened is excused, but I don't bump into female gamers everday. When I do I am grateful, it doesn't happen everday. You should also consider the signifigance that you are different in ways other than physiologically. Women are different company to be kept and they obviously change the atmosphere of the squad for the better. If you can't understand this, then my words are lost but I don't regret trying.
Now, with all the sunshine in the universe gathered in one place the rest is wrapped in darkness. What I mean to say is we will see you even less and you will be missed. |
