The difference between sexism and feminism is that sexism was formed to separate men and women based on the idea that "men are better than women", while feminism is based on the idea that "women are equal to men". It's not sexist that I've created a separate channel for women. I did it because I'm tired of males coming on to me in-game because I am a female, acting like I have to be waaaay better (or a lot freaking worse) than them because I am a female, calling me foul words and saying I belong in a kitchen because I am a female, [I could continue this list] and I believe other women feel my pain.


PLEASE let me know NOW that males get this same **** online and I will delete my channels. I'm not saying all males are douche bags, a-holes, stupid, or any other negative thing. I care about too many people to ever generalize any of them. I'm not saying all females are saints either (****, I'm not and I know too many who aren't). I just want to get to the comradeship part without being eroticized. I don't expect every woman to be heterosexual because I'm not, but I do expect to be respected since I'm giving that same respect. Female gamers give me that regardless of sexuality.

Not disagreeing with what you said but sexism is a two way street, its just like with racism its assumed that it only applies one way which is itself racist/sexist. And it really is ****** that people act like such douches to anyone perceived as being different from the norm, in this case female gamers.

I probably wouldn't even bother explaining the nuances of patriarchy to most of the forumgoers, you'll wind up bogged down in semantics rather than the reality of the situation.

The responses I am anticipating to this explanation include "but not all guys are like that, you're generalising!", "sexism works both ways!" and "I'm one of the nice guys!", totally oblivious to the tried and true tropes they are trotting out.

The overwhelming majority of the people you are explaining this to are positively affected by the situation giving them no reason to put any thought into it and plenty of reason to ignore it. If they want to educate themselves, the internets are FULL of resources to do so.

I only turn my mic on in squad, but sometimes the squad leader forgets to lock the squad and we have randoms join. That hasn't really been an issue for me though (I've met some really awesome people through random squads - *cough*Jane*cough*).

This one time, I had one guy join and proceed to immediately FREAK OUT saying "OMG OMG OMG OMG..! ARE YOU A GIRL?!" I swear he was hyperventilating. We are not rare and mythical unicorns - come on, just take a look outside.

My squad leader said something to the effect of "No, he's just a young boy."

It was pretty hilarious.

I count myself among one of the lucky ones on Dust (and in FPS games in general) who hasn't been the target of very many sexist / offensive remarks, but I know that it does exist and it happens quite frequently to others. What Valencia and a few others have said is correct... There is definitely a difference between getting harrassed for being a scrub or how you play the game and getting harrassed based on your gender. If you can't tell the difference between the two, then you are part of the problem.
