I did a little testing this week. Played Skirmish and used CRU drop ships in all games. This is what happened in EVERY game :
72 people spawned in my CRU ship over 14 matches.
1) Game starts and I Spawn a ship and fly to rooftop/unclaimed OBJ. 2) Bluedots attack and first wave suffer deaths. 3) they spawn in my ship over OBJ. 4) they never leave the ship. EVER the whole game, at least 4 of them. 5) the gunners NEVER stop shooting even when I am way off map repping; they shoot the walls, the sky, the front of my ship sending it into spasms.
I move to a OBJ that ground forces are attacking and hover overhead, my ship stays full. None of them drop out. I try landing. Nothing. I move to the spawn near the MCC and land. All of them sit there, even when I sat there for 8 minutes.
Result = My 800k ship locks 4 to 6 people out of the battle for the whole match. We lose 70% of the games. Even though i take risks to get them to OBJs that are free for enemies, they still sit there shooting the sky.
In PUB matches it seems a CRU DS is in-fact good to help the team lose most of the time.
SUGGESTION : (may add to feedback section later. Just venting atm)
The kick from ship thing has been discussed, so ill add something new - How about a GTFO pad? there are many landing pads on structures already. How about at each spawn near the MCC there is a pad that when you land on it all occupants GTFO. Its a safe place and I can get the message to them that they are useless and not wanted.
This can be an addition to any GTFO green light or whatever gets added as per the DS discussion threads.

I've had the opposite experience as you, my CRU dropship usually helps win matches. Of course I'm using my mic and switching to the team chat channel telling people to jump out. |

Tried it. Silence. Of course these are the results from 14 matches with a 70% loss ratio. By no means fully representative of gameplay as a whole. Also with people in squad chat, they often can't hear me anyway.

I never see reasoning for going out of your way to use a CRU on a dropship. I see them then just go "Why! Why waste the game and the ship like that!".

dude i was playing an ambush match today and someone took down one of those cru dropships right..
the thing was shot down and hit the L pipe on that 5 point clustered map.. 5 kids crawled out of the wreckage onto that pipe man.
i was like what in the hell just happened, i got a triple kill tho.. dunno why people sit in those things, maybe they just like the view.. |

I never understood why people just sit in the dropship. Whats the fun in that. Maybe instead of GTFO pad there could be a jump light. Kinda the inside of the dropship would have red light flashing so all nongunners could see it. Then maybe they would get the hint. Also maybe that eve lady from the warbarge could just say " please exit dropship" |

That isn't enough matches for the derpship to be considered a factor in the losses. Could very easily be that 70% of the limited number of matches you played would have been lost with or without the ship, especially seeing as you had the type of team that doesn't know to get out over an objective.
Do you think they would have done any better on the ground? |

How could they not do better?
In a DS all they can do is die.
On the ground at least they can maybe get kills. Or be a bullet sponge for other good players but more effectively than in one DS because they'd be spread out with separate HP pools. |

Do you have a mic?
Did you enable Team Voice?

Specifically did you instruct the Blues in what to do?

More Explanation from my own experience:
The reason I ask is that when I am doing the Lone Wolf thing I switch to Team Voice and lead the Blues. That simple action gives me a 50% success/failure* rate. Sometimes you are against experienced Corp squads and those odds are definitely stacked against Random Blues.
Example conversation:
Blues, this is Kal Of The Rathi. I am your Tank driver. Your job is to capture Letter Objectives and to keep me alive.
The longer I am alive the more the Reds will obsess about killing me and my Tank and the less they will focus on winning the battle.
If you want to be a Gunner fine but please let those with a mic have first choice. Comm between Driver and Gunners are crucial.
We need a Squad Leader with a mic. Create a Squad, tell myself and my Gunners to join your Squad. Set Defend Order on the Tank. Use Orbital Strikes as soon as possible. Don't worry, we will try to get you another one.
If you want a Supply Depot capture and defend it. If it is Red more than Blue I Will Destroy it. Same goes for CRUs.
Etc., etc., etc.
Adjust as necessary for your particular situation such as explaining the use of the pip for targeting, never fire on a turret unless I Tell you to, how to use a Cycling Missile Turret (Hold down the trigger and don't let up once you have a target) and when you shout Drop or Bail ... do so Immediately.
* success/failure can be subjective as well as objective. Did I find some good Gunners? Did the Squad Leader do their job? Did the Blues start grouping up and capturing Objectives. At the very end of that list is did my Tank survive and did we Win. |

There's something magical about derpships that can transform any type of KD/R player into an eyes glazed over comatose clone.
In all likely hood they'd have at least as good kd/r on the ground as the other teams redberries. Except in a DS they can only die. 7 people in a dropship effectively leaves the game as 7 vs 15 and those 7 left are much worse off to get camped and stomped without even the Illusion of support than they would if everyone was on the ground derping around. |

I switched to team in all but two of the matches. Atleast one of the people in the ship had a mic as I could see the mic symbol and it pulsed green every now and then meaning they were making some noise (breathing, button pressing etc)
I tried to keep it as simple as I could.
1) First I asked if they had a destination 2) Then I told them where I was going 3) I told them I would say when we arrived 4) I told them I would say when it was safe to exit
not once did they acknowledge that they heard me. (I did shout really loudly once so I could hear myself feedback through their mic, so I know at least sometimes I was heard) I also typed a message in team chat each round instruction them to exit the DS as it was not being played as a gun-ship
In most cases most of the ship did not have mics active. Often they were in a squad so not in team chat (not the full squad in the ship, just one random guy). The issue may have been one of communication but I susspect not. There is just nogood reason to hang about in a gun slot if the pilot hangs in a safe spot against a building for a few minutes or parks on a roof or is waiting at the start for pickups.
THE big issue is they are filling the ship stopping people from spawning in who might want to try get an objective. In the best match someone may got AFK to help their child or some valid reason. I need to be able to get them out in a fair way. GTFO pads (or a more ccp friendly name of MUAF pads or TDPs- Man Up And Fight or Troop Deployment Pads) get them out in a most likely safe place. a GTFO at spawn leaves them perfectly safe (PS and OS the exception) |

True there are too many factors to consider the CRU ship the deciding factor. But it is hard to see how removing 4 players from acting (5 if you add me) for the duration of the match would not have some negative effect on my teams performance. |

I would take the boot of god tower sniping DS of yore over what they are now, I mean CCP fixed all the issues with dropships with AV grenades and render distances that don't suck, why they then proceeded to further break DSs is beyond me.
+1 to OP all the way tho I still favor the kick button, I'll take the potential to troll if it means that DS can do their jobs, if it means no one gets in my DS anymore least they are not wasting my teams time. |

I actually think some players don't know how to exit vehicles. If I were a straight newbie in this game I surely wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes in a landed dropship shooting a wall. I'd like to get out so I can do something interesting. If I knew how to get out. Otherwise I'd be stuck with only a turret to shoot and no other form of interaction.

My very first day playing I spawned into a DS and dint know how to get out, but that isn't last long. I think some new players are just entranced by the view. |

Yeah but most of the time we want the gunners to leave the ship. I rarely fly any more, have proto turrets and all the good stuff...waste of sp, until i can kick out bad gunners and pick up someone that can prioritize between the enemy tank i am hovering over and that random red dot on the opposite side of the map that is even out of range for a Thale's sniper rifle.
On a side note, if you have a worthless gunner that is pissing you off, just go find an enemy sniper and hover in front of him. Either the gunner will die or maybe (just Maybe) he will kill the sniper....either way problem solved. |

This is pretty much what I have to resort to. Obviously the game is broken if I have to hover in front of an HMG praying he'll spray my bluetard dead so my million isk DS can stop being an expensive 100% worthless liability. |

How about instead of a GTFO light, the pilot has access to bay doors, and just drop the kittens (minus gunners that are strapped in) out into the fray? Make it a literal "drop"ship, plus you can drop afk'ers on top of a tank, or in the path of an LAV if they're annoying.
To really screw with someone, you could find a location near the flight ceiling, and find a way to wedge them up there. Above the draw distance for any chance to contribute to the fight.
To clarify, I don't fly yet, still working on skills, but reading about blueberry hitchhikers has me rankled already. |

CCP take dropships off the game now!!.. or add fighter ships... so people can understand the diference between a dropship and a fighter ship...
I mean, i know its fun to fly inside this flying tank, but the damn thing is expensive you know, if you can-Št shoot then jump and kill people on the ground. |

i think dropships will see much more use once people can shoot out of them.
nothing like a spinning short bus with 4 swarm launchers and 2 missile launchers firing at everything ever.
if it has wheels, treads, or bolts it will be destroyed. |

Pilots need a chat where they can put together squads. I started a thread and got some good advice on what we should do when we spawn into a DS. Since then I've been in a dozen or so and only one pilot had a mic. When they do drop me its been someplace high and my AR is useless so I jump down, thats better than spawing into a bunch of red dots though. They fly someplace high and land that way most know to get out, sometime when you are just hovering I''m not sure if you want us to jump or not.
We are also going to need a way to find pilots for Planetary Conquest, good pilots will be a huge plus in those battles. |
