Vs bunny hoppers, don't aim where they are in the air, aim where they are going to be landing because when they lift off they cant change their trajectory and it gives you a second or so extra to line up because it takes less setup then trying to track a bunny. |

If i could have add a hundred likes to that thread i would have done it. I was very pleased to know that a Dust University was created a while back and that's typically the type of players i was expecting to see in it. Imo, one dumb stubborn individual ready to ***** at the game for every death or difficulty will never consider joining a teaching corporation as he already knows everything about everything...
On the other hand, a player smart enough to take a step back and go "hey, i'm gonna need a hand there" deserves to have the opportunity to learn.
So bottom line, congrats on the work there to Dust-Uni. And kudos to the OP for offering such a refreshing post.
Oh and to Dust-uni leaders, please do contact me via mail in game to set some specific games. |

Fox, great post and great thread overall. Nice to see so many supportive responses from experienced players. I was beginning to get tired of all the machismo BS attitude that flared up when we went into open beta.
I've been playing since last summer and I'm still dying, lol. Like you I haven't played so many fps games, was never my thing. But Dust is so different somehow, I'm determined to get better. I'm determined to become a real asset to my corp as well and it was first when I joined D-uni and started running with squads that certain things started to make sense. Heck I even learned a thing or two from your OP. thanks for that. Thank you for braving the flames to tell us about your experience thus far. There are many ways to play this thing ,I think. It is, after all, just a game (oh yes I didGǪ) There are new players joining all the time that run circles around me and there are players ,like myself, that have been here for a while, but take time to get good. Now I can survive with style more often than not (though nobody is ever around to see this happen) and am constantly honing the techniques and tactics I learn from others.
I look forward to squading up some time. |

I tried using the controller/mouse combination last night.
The mouse did give me more precise control of my aim and allowed me to aim more quickly. At mid range I could line up head shots or track moving targets much more easily, and at sniping rang it made it much easier to line up a target.
Unfortunately, the mouse sensitivity was not set as high as I am used to and I could not turn fast enough to track a target in close quarter combat, or to quickly scan the horizon for snipers.
I also found that my left hand did not know what my right hand was doing. I was fine until I started moving, then I kept running into walls and getting lost. I would probably do better if I used a keyboard with the mouse. If I stuck with the controller/mouse combination I would probably get used to it with a bit of practice.
However, one of the things I like most about Dust is the fluid feel of movement using the two sticks on the ergonomically layed out controller. I feel like I have complete control of my movement. I can run in a straight line while looking left, right, or even turning around without altering my direction of travel. My left thumb knows what my right thumb is doing and automatically compensates. The buttons are layed out in a way that I can hit the right button every time. No hitting the wrong key or losing your place on your keyboard.
Also my PS3 is in my living room and I already have enough remotes and controllers laying around without adding a keyboard, and to use one effectively I would probably need to have a flat surface to lay it on. This adds to the clutter in a room I donGÇÖt want to look cluttered. Finally, my PS3 only has 2 USB slots so if I use a mouse and headset I have to shuffle USB connections before and after I play in order to keep my headset and control charged.
I think I would rather just try to get good with the PS3 controller. It seems that with practice I should be able to approach the accuracy of the mouse with it. It is all about stopping your swing at the exact right moment so that you land on your target the first time without having to jerk back and forth to fine toon your aim. If I am going to be playing for a long stretch I might setup my wireless thumb ball mouse on the coffee table beside me so I can reach down and fine-toon the occasional challenging sniper shot. But I donGÇÖt think I want to become dependent on the mouse. |

I am also those who grab PS3 for Dust as well and never play any FPS on console before. I also threw the controller/ headbutt to the wall numerous time during the first two days I started playing this game. I tried and tried. It was like no, impossible, I can't play FPS on console. I simply can't AIM at anything AT ALL. As I'm on the verge of rage quitting. I saw a mouse/keyboard in an option. I suddenly grabbed some random USB keyboard and mouse lying around, plug it in, problem solved :)

In the last two days I have had several matches where I faced skilled FPS players. The experience was impressive/daunting/scarey but most of all very humbling. (For instance, in my only Corp battle to date we went up against What The French. WTF was certainly my reaction to meeting them in battle. LOL) A good player with an assault rifle can kill me at their maximum range in the time it takes me to line up a shot with a sniper rifle. And I sport an assault suit with upgraded shield and armour skills, not one of those paper scout suits. I use cover, and study tactics. I try to play this game smart. But non of that matters when it takes 3 seconds to line up a shot and I am playing against people who can line up their shot as fast as they can move their weapon. On the up side, I am way better with the controllers than I was when I started about a week before Open Bata. So I think what I need is just practice, practice, Practice! Luckily my wife is going to be away for the next 3 weeks on training. Now, the points I want to make (all be they random and divers): - This game does require skill, the kind you canGÇÖt buy in a book using ISK. I know, because I donGÇÖt have it. (Yet?) - I am an expert at dying, yet I have not encountered a weapon yet that I thought was overpowered. I have been able to figure out how to deal with each one I have encountered... in theory. In practice a girl-scout with a sling shot could probably take me in a straight up fire fight, but I did not make this thread to cry for a nerf to slingshots. - I have encountered players who are worse than I am. I sure hope they donGÇÖt post nerf threads. - The frustration of being killed 5 times in a row by the same guy with a laser riffle all goes away when you come over a hill with a sniper rifle and see laser riffle guy standing with his back to you. Give me 10 seconds to aim and even I can get a head shot. - Finally, as horrible as I am, I have been thoroughly enjoying this game and the people in it. I would like to tip my hat to the skilled FPS players that I have faced in battle and who have shown me a level of skill I can aspire to. Well said, Fox Gaden, and well fought.
For what it's worth, i'm in exactly the same boat as you. Bought my PS3 for DUST, never used a controller before in my life. The learning process has been interesting....and painful lol =)
I bought my PS3 before getting beta access and to practice up before hitting DUST i bought a used copy of MAG. Epic spastic antics ensued. I was so bad peeps would basically auto-kick me on sight from the most lowly pub matches. I was called many, many different forms of loser in team chat, in several different lanuages. And I can't say i blame them, tbh. Things have gotten better but there's still a looooooong way to go before I've learned my fps chops.
I've(very recently) been where you are right now - you're still working on turning all your clear-headed thinking into muscle memory, and the only answer for that is time-in-combat. But it comes, and if you keep on pushing yourself into situations that are just on the outer edge of what your skills can handle, improvements happen steadily, even if it is a little bruising to the ego =P
Looking forward to seeing you on the battlefield, and looking forward to the day you're sending serious pawnage my way.
Die well. |

This is the kind of positivity that we've tried to encourage in DUST University and Fox is a credit to that positivity. o7
We're never going to be the most deadly corp out there, or the most feared. But what we are determined to be is the best thought of. Once the roles mechanics are sorted out and we can put in place a bigger staff, the plan is run it like our sister corp EVE University.
In the meantime its just me running it at the moment. So if any corps want to arrange a match , just check into the Chat.D-UNI channel and, if I'm online and send me a message.
We also schedule corp Matches from 18.00 Eve time to 08.00, every two hours on Monday to Thursday's and every 90 minutes Friday to Sunday between the same hours, so check them out
I usually set them up before going to work between 7.00 eve time and 8.00 eve time.
Ohhh to have roles in the build other than CEO and director. I can then delegate. |

gotta say if you aren't trolling, you deserve some respect for that.
THAT right there is the number one problem with the console gaming community:
they think they are equal to everyone.
they aren't.
you can't go up against someone who has been playing team based shoooters for 10 years and think you're gonna be equal to them. just ain't never gonna happen. you can play for 10 years but unless that guy quits... he is now 20 years experienced vs your 10.
so the devs come along and put training wheels in place to keep the casuals from finding out what you posted.
red lines, FF off, V2K off, nerf, nerf, pussify.
all those things and more are training wheels for the masses. they go a long way toward creating the illusion of player balance.
of course the vages will claim that's not true... until you turn all those things on and then the vages will run screaming to the forums about how "they can't handle the truth" and need more protection from the ass kickings they are getting.
keep playing and you'll get better. blame the game and you'll never change.
1 thing though:
put down the sniper rifle. it's useless and you're useless to your team when you use it. get better at cutting your response time down. but don't do it with a sniper rifle. it's a waste of time.

Play and learn. Don't go solo. Try medic and shadow. But most important is pick a role and stick to it. Get awesome in it. Don't try for doing everything. FPS Vets didn't get good over night. You want to snipe? Then Snipe, At the objective's. COVER objectives. I secure and hold with my shotty and c4s. But it's always a big help if after my c4 eats a few, that I have to only worry about one target instead of two. |

Also, as a sniper use mouse+DS3 combo if you want to do well.
However if you want to get good at handling the DS3 then sniping is actually a rather good way of building the muscle memory required to do fine-adjustments and in general aim. |
