Tribes Ascend.
Planetside 2.
Halo 4.
Natural Selection 2.
Borderlands series.
Look these up for starters. It's not just about weapon sounds...explosions and environmental sounds too. |

I didn't say anything about realism. Re-read again.
I said they sounded crap.
Now, stop being sensitive and either contribute or go be sycophantic to CCP in another thread.

You said you didn't say anything about realism, yet in my previous quote you clearly did. So, mr expert game sound designer, what's a realistic sound for plasma weapons? Don't forget to use your past experience with plasma weapons as a basis, oh....and halo too.

Jesus christ. It's like trying educate pork.
Are you able to separate your love of the game from it's current state for 5 minutes? Are you able to comprehend that you are a beta tester and that you are here to critique various aspects of the game to help make it better? How in the name of all that is good in the world are you unable to see that the game would benefit from better sound design? Is it really that hard to understand? If it is, then I just don't know what to say to help you.

I don't know what theoretical plasma weapons would sound like but I'd bet my bottom dollar if I had an Assault Rifle based on these design (with all the aesthetic looks of a generic AR) that it wouldn't sound like a guy playing a washboard in a southern cajun ensemble. |

Constructive criticism yes, not rip the damn thing apart!! Yes I'm aware I'm a beta tester, I've been testing it since december 2011,I'm fully aware of what we are here to do, but coming out with crap like 'hire a new sound designer' is not constructive criticism, it's rude and damn obnoxious. Especially when you have no reasoning behind your OP. Give an example of what YOU deem acceptable for plasma weapons to sound like and then maybe your argument will have some foundation. |

Good job with reading comprehension there or perhaps you're just trying to twist his words.

Yes, because I need to be able to make a film to tell when a film is good or bad, paint a Mona Lisa to critique art or play an instrument to tell that Skrillex is horrendous.

I gave 5 examples of games that I think have good weapon sound design. 2 of them are F2P FPS's.
I still don't understand why you are so sensitive to my wording (which was tongue in cheek), unless you are part of the dev team? |

The point is that the sounds in this game sound about one step above 8 bit MIDI. if I wanted the sound like that I would play snes. It's like the sound is missing multiple channels worth of effect. I don't need to be a sound engineer to recognize when a sound is plain and unlayered. I have a feeling some of these fanboys play on SD tvs and still play 8track tapes.
The difference can also find metaphor between your laptop stock speakers and a Bose system. The punch of the sounds just isn't there.
I don't care if they sound modern or realistic , although those sounds come to mind as good sounds bc they are very real and sound amazing. It's the "punch" a sound can deliver and dust simply doesn't have that yet. It all sounds like 1hp , battery operated, junk. No feeling of power

I'd be one happy camper if PS3 allowed MIDI interaction or just a multi-channel output I could hook into my Behringer Eurorack mixer

Hi, CCP Earworm, sound programmer for Dust, here.
Later this week we're content streaming a lot of new sounds, affecting everything from the music to the explosions to the firing sounds of many different weapons. These changes are a big step to finishing the sound and setting the mood we want.
The LAR is one sound that we've constantly iterated on since it's the bread and butter of the dust battlefield. We've gone through a ton of versions to find the right fit for the LAR, and the new version coming in this week (along with all the sweeping changes in overall sound) takes into account what you guys have been talking about here.
Thanks for all the comments!

My overall impression of sounds are that they are pretty suitable to the mood of the game. The only sound that really made me react was the shotgun sound, it's friggin awesome! First reaction was like "wtf was that? better stay at range.." |

I hope that the shotgun will be among the sound effects you're modifying?
My only reason for not using such a badass thing as a plasma-burst shotgun is that the damn thing sounds like a badly-oiled wrought iron gate. |

Can not unhear... you have ruined it for me.
Personally my biggest issue is the LAV sounding like how a stand up comedian makes out a Prius. The thing needs to be louder, more distinct among the chaos of battle. |

Nice to hear that sounds are being updated. THe one thing I would like to hear a difference in, is the sound right before an orbital strike. I dont know know about you guys, but I would like a sound thats just bone chilling when you hear the imminent strike from the sky. I sort of had in mind like that chilling sound the aliens made in War of The Worlds, ( yes the tom cruise version ) that deep horn type of sound. Something along that would be awesome, seeing as how an orbital strike is something that EVERYONE should fear!! |
