Hi. I just got into the beta yesterday, and have already played a few matches. So far, the game seems pretty solid (as long as it's not going to be released before the end of the year). But my biggest concern is that nothing is adequately explained. I'm a hardcore gamer (especially within the FPS genre), but I have no idea how most of the game works, even after reading the tutorials.
So, here are my questions: 1. What game-types are there other than team deathmatch? 2. Is the heavy class supposed to be good against vehicles? I tried to hit a vehicle multiple times with what looked like a rocket launcher, but I didn't see much happen. Is there a charge up time for those types of weapons? 3. I've seen ammo caches around the map. Is there any way to destroy enemy ones? And can I steal enemy ammo from said enemy caches? 4. How do the limited supplies (like guns and shields) work? 5. Is experience in a category gained by killing people, using that particular equipment, or in some other way? 6. Do items ever drop on the battlefield, or do players always have to buy them from the store? 7. There is no music during most of the game. Is that a glitch or is the music not finished yet? 8. The battlefields I've been in seemed predominantly grey and brown. Is there a lot of map variety, or is that the overwhelming standard so far? 9. Is melee supposed to hit instantly (when the button is pressed) or when the knife actually swings (there is a 3 second or so delay)? How effective of a strategy is melee when up close, and does a melee from behind result in a 1-hit kill? 10. How effective are grenades? I never managed to hit anyone (well, enemies at least) with one yet. 11. Are there squad-spawning mechanics? The menu makes me think so, but I never bothered trying to figure it out (easier to spawn in default). |

1. What game-types are there other than team deathmatch? Skirmish which is objective based. Hack the node, hope you kill the MCC. More to come.
2. Is the heavy class supposed to be good against vehicles? I tried to hit a vehicle multiple times with what looked like a rocket launcher, but I didn't see much happen. Is there a charge up time for those types of weapons? Heavy is good against infantry and can use a forge for vehicles. I hear forge is crap this build.
3. I've seen ammo caches around the map. Is there any way to destroy enemy ones? And can I steal enemy ammo from said enemy caches? You can, hit it a lot with AV stuff. you can also hack it for you team.
4. How do the limited supplies (like guns and shields) work? If you buy anything thats not militia, you get a limited supply. Buy them in batches. Every time you die, you use the items used. Theres a risk for using better equipment then militia.
5. Is experience in a category gained by killing people, using that particular equipment, or in some other way? Killing, hacking, assisting. Its not even across the board but I don't know the details.
6. Do items ever drop on the battlefield, or do players always have to buy them from the store? They don't currently drop on the battlefield, but you get misc items afterwords
7. There is no music during most of the game. Is that a glitch or is the music not finished yet? I dont know.
8. The battlefields I've been in seemed predominantly grey and brown. Is there a lot of map variety, or is that the overwhelming standard so far? Play a few more. Theres grassy, red, barren environments.
9. Is melee supposed to hit instantly (when the button is pressed) or when the knife actually swings (there is a 3 second or so delay)? How effective of a strategy is melee when up close, and does a melee from behind result in a 1-hit kill? I don't bother with melee. I dont know how it works.
10. How effective are grenades? I never managed to hit anyone (well, enemies at least) with one yet. AV grenades are great against LAVs. other nades are also good when you get a hit. can OHK I think.
11. Are there squad-spawning mechanics? The menu makes me think so, but I never bothered trying to figure it out (easier to spawn in default). Sort of. You can join the same team as your squad.. But I dont think you can spawn to your squad unless they are in a Vehicle with a MCRU |

I'll elaborate on these ones:
Dactis wrote: 2. Is the heavy class supposed to be good against vehicles? I tried to hit a vehicle multiple times with what looked like a rocket launcher, but I didn't see much happen. Is there a charge up time for those types of weapons?
The swarm launcher (which the heavy starter fit is equipped with) is really only effective vs vehicles and structures, it has a huge penalty vs infantry. Right now, it can be dry fired, or if you hold R1 it will pop up a lock-on function.
Dactis wrote:5. Is experience in a category gained by killing people, using that particular equipment, or in some other way?
You gain skill points based on the amount of war points you earn in battle. War points are the numbers that pop up all over the place, +50 for kills, etc.
Dactis wrote:8. The battlefields I've been in seemed predominantly grey and brown. Is there a lot of map variety, or is that the overwhelming standard so far?
There's a lot of brown right now, but there is the occasional grass and snow variant. There should be a lot more diversity in the future, we've only just now gotten more than 1 setting per map with this build.
Dactis wrote:9. Is melee supposed to hit instantly (when the button is pressed) or when the knife actually swings (there is a 3 second or so delay)? How effective of a strategy is melee when up close, and does a melee from behind result in a 1-hit kill?
Melee seems to activate when you let go of R3. It doesn't go when you click it, but when you release, which can cause that delay. It's not a one-hit kill, and never will be unless you get its damage up high enough. You can check your dropsuit's info to see your base melee damage (I think it's 135 right now), which can be increased with skills and modules. I think this is going to change in the future, because it looks like the knife will be an actual equippable item, so it shouldn't be listed on the dropsuit if that changes.
Dactis wrote:10. How effective are grenades? I never managed to hit anyone (well, enemies at least) with one yet.
They're very strong right now, many I've talked to think too strong. They also have a chance to glitch it seems, causing no damage when they look like they should. It's being investigated by the devs.
You can apparently only quote 5 times in a post now... 11. Are there squad-spawning mechanics? The menu makes me think so, but I never bothered trying to figure it out (easier to spawn in default).
There are not in the sense of spawning on your squad leader. Vehicles can equip mobile CRUs (clone reanimation units) that allow people to spawn inside the vehicle (some vehicle variants have this built-in), and infantry can equip and then use drop uplinks, which act as stationary, deployable spawn points for the team. |

1. What game-types are there other than team deathmatch?
There are variants of objective based maps. It's randomly chosen at the moment, but last build had optional game types. This concept will expand in time as it integrates with EVE.
2. Is the heavy class supposed to be good against vehicles? I tried to hit a vehicle multiple times with what looked like a rocket launcher, but I didn't see much happen. Is there a charge up time for those types of weapons? Charge, yes. L1 to zoom, line up the taget vehicle, HOLD R1, wait for red lock-on. Release R1. Repeat as needed. Just keep in mind that it's quite possible that your target vehicle driver has skills enough that your starter gear may do no real damage.
3. I've seen ammo caches around the map. Is there any way to destroy enemy ones? And can I steal enemy ammo from said enemy caches? Supply Depots are hackable. From the map overview and mini-map view, yellow is neutral. Red is enemy controlled, while blue is friendly. These items are hackable by either team. Move close enough and you should see the Hack Installation option using the O button on your DS3 controller. There are temp portable options that players can drop strategically around the map. You can't hack those, but you can shoot them.
4. How do the limited supplies (like guns and shields) work? Shields recharge with time. Shield recharge has a default delay before recharge starts. Check your gear specs to check times and values as each item is unique. Market items can boost this. Skills can boost this. Etc. Armor repairers exist on the market also. Shields go down, then armor goes down. Some BASIC questions might be answered in the reply here: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=293648#post293648
5. Is experience in a category gained by killing people, using that particular equipment, or in some other way? Little bit of everything. Helping your team capture, defend, kill, flight, etc. etc. You gain skill points from what you do during a match. Also, points are earned passively but slowly. Use those skill points to train skills to boost stats and/or upgrade gear.
6. Do items ever drop on the battlefield, or do players always have to buy them from the store? Items drop. Dust calls it "salvage". Notice the lower left corner block of your end-game stat screens. It's automatic and you do not have to manually hunt for salvaged items. It just happens or it doesn't. This may change with time I assume.
7. There is no music during most of the game. Is that a glitch or is the music not finished yet? Never really paid attention to the music. You're in a battle field though, so I can't imagine why it would belong there ;)
8. The battlefields I've been in seemed predominantly grey and brown. Is there a lot of map variety, or is that the overwhelming standard so far? As BETA we're restricted to what they see fit. It's temp. There have been other maps, but yes I've seen more dusty play fields than others. They do exist though, and will open up with time.
9. Is melee supposed to hit instantly (when the button is pressed) or when the knife actually swings (there is a 3 second or so delay)? How effective of a strategy is melee when up close, and does a melee from behind result in a 1-hit kill? I hate the knife to just not bother as I've always swung moments after the enemy has already moved out of the way ;) I believe there are skills to help though available from the market.
10. How effective are grenades? I never managed to hit anyone (well, enemies at least) with one yet. My experience, started grenades are weak, but do kill. You may need to practice leading your target with them, like for example, if you notice an enemy running towards and behind a wall or hill, toss the grenade towards his estimated exit point. He will die. The problem I notice is that most players see you throw it at them and if you don't hold it for a moment, they will simply move to another location.
11. Are there squad-spawning mechanics? The menu makes me think so, but I never bothered trying to figure it out (easier to spawn in default). Objective-based maps you have default spawn locations. Hackable locations can become spawn points if your team controls it. You lose the spawn option if the enemy hacks and takes control. Tug of war. The team deathmatches you mentioned are random spawn points. Players have options to get Drop Uplinks from the market to place around the map. If you drop one, all players on your team will see this temp spawn point on the map upon death. These are temp, so don't depend on it for too long. 10 spawns or whatever the specs describe.
Welcome aboard, and good luck.

1. Skirmish - basically it's about saving your MCC(Moblile Comand Center), and destroying enemy one with huge structures. 2. Swarm Launcher it's Light weapon, try to use Forge Gun(Assault ver. have best dps, Breach have biggest alfa but it's preventing you from move) and remember to shot tank form safe distant. 3. Nanohive(buble thing) can be just destroyd for now, but you can always retake enemy Supply Depot if you need some ammo, grenade or you need to switch dropsuit. 4. Every time you die(bleed out) you lose you fiting - weapon, shield's modules, dropsuit etc. to come back on battlefield you need to have those items in you're assets or resupply them from the market. 5. It is a pattern for that that's for sure, it's include War Points that you gain during the battle, number of how many you die, and of curse did you're team win the battle. Each time when you kill someone, re-take structure, hack it, or revive fallen friend you gain War Point's. 6. At the end of the game, sometimes you get salvage items from that battle. Basic, Advenc, Prototype, Unique. 7. That can be some bug, but fact remains that CCP had some more important thing to do lately than add new sounds. 8. For now we testing game-play dusty environments - we don't see much tree. 9. Knifing from behind in not result 1-hit kill as in BF. If you max knifing skill to max and use modules you will hit for around 600hp/hit or something like that(cheak ninja tutorial somewhere here, it's explained that kind of thing better). 10. I have not much experience on that to, except basic AV that blows up militia LAV with one hit.. 11. Team spawning - you can use module "Drop Uplinks" ppl can spawn on it(check on market), or you can use on vehicle CRU module. |

Thanks for the quick answers guys.
Out of curiosity, do the devs plan to increase movement speed (not sprint speed)? It feels a little lacking to me right now. |

There is skirmish mode where your team has to destroy the other mobile command center capturing Null cannons to fire at them. In the future more will be added such as 'incusion' mode where you and your team has to fight off hoards of enemies.
Heavy Suit is designed for operations where he doesnt have to run around that much and have to withstand alot of fire power. As with any suit how you fit it determines it role. A heavy suit for example with a shotgun is an excellent stormtopper able to clear out rooms. While ones armed with an HMG can cut squads down and those using forge guns could cuase serious hurt to vehicles.
The 'supply' depot if you refering to this is caputrable just run up to it an hack it. The amoo spheres you see are nanohives they're not stealable but destroying them is a simple manner of one or two shots.
All items with the exception of starter fits are lost on death so stock up ahead of time
Salvage at end of hte fight is a random loot roll of the table the more stuff gets destroyed the larger the table gets and the better you before the more rolls you get up to max 3. future interations will improve this to match your 'class'
Earning war points also works on skill points, you can use skill points to improve yoru soldier or qualifiy for new items, war points are also spent seperately on infield support these are reset every match though but tallied up as a score on the leader boards.
Most multiplayer games dont have music in them, You can google up eve online music and hear alot of the music that could be in dust 514 one day or something inspired.
Keep playing there is green red and white a bouts and thats just mood setting we're still technically on one planet.
its instant and the swipe is much larger than the screen area. its gong to change up next patch however.
Grandes are not working due to some collision bug, its being worked on after all its beta.
There is a drop uplink that a squads can deploy for thier team it would not suprrise me if htey come up with a mobile drop uplink for command suits comming soon. |
