I have tried my best but just can not for the life of me get more kills than I have been killed. When I aim at someone, its like I hardly hit them at all and they kill me in just a matter of seconds. I guess this is just no my thing. Compared to the players that get 20+ kills to just a handful or less deaths, I am completely useless. Quite depressing. |

also you can change the controller sensitivity in the settings, might help.
also yeah other posters are right, there will be match making soon, right now you are stuck with new players and good players with better gear in the same map...

Don't worry.
My K/D is about 0.33 right now.
Are you making yourself useful to the team? Hacking objectives, taking down vehicles or forcing them to retreat, making enemies hold back from objectives that have been hacked (you don't necessarily have to kill for this), repairing/reviving teammates, etc. are all valid ways to support the team WITHOUT giving you a good K/D stat. |

I agree. I'm on my third weekend and am just now coming into my own. I also think that too much importance is placed on the K/D ratio. This game is unlike other fps' IMO. At least in the skirmish matches. |

Get a mic and talk to people in the game. People with mics are exciting and having a great time everyone is glad to share some tips and information on the game to newcomers. Make sure to go in options and turn on voice chat.
Don't worry about your KD Ratio. Just like the other people said try to play in a group don't run around solo its gonna be very hard to do damage when everyone is fitted much better. Just try to provide backup and scare off people not necessarily take them out and die so much |

I feel you. This is my second weekend of play and I am pretty terrishitpoopbad. I think I am about 0.4 kdr. Does not matter though. Play smart and roll with your squad. Hack objectives or jump around spray and pray while an ally take the obj. Just as helpful as an actual kill. Also coming from the PC also I am having a hard time with the joy sticks... |

Command points, CRU's, Supply Depot's, and Vehicles can all be hacked. Walk up to the little blue sphere on any of the first three and it will say "Press O To Hack". For enemy vehicles they have to be unmanned, and you just have to stand next to it, they don't have a little blue sphere.
A good way to be supportive is to get a Logi suit and put down nanohives for your Forge gunners or anyone using Swarm Launchers (good for the rest of your team too). Can also get a Repair Tool to heal injured allies, or a Nanite Injector to revived downed friendlies.
Don't worry, as you spend more and more time in game, it will get easier and easier, you'll figure it out as you go. Using a mic (make sure to turn on voice chat even if you don't have a mic) will greatly help you, most people will be glad to give you some pointers, as long as you follow instructions, and aren't constantly being a "run-and-gun" dumbass and dying constantly.. nobody wants to help somebody that just wont listen :P |

Seriously though, **** all with frag rate I've played this game for moths and I still haven't got better then 15/4 with my sniper rifle. I've noticed that there is a one difference between newbs and vets which is that vets don't stand still while I fight the controller to get proper aim. |

Pretty much everything the other team owns can be hacked except for their nanohives, drop uplinks, and their own dropsuits (heh i just wish i could hack a suit with some sucker in it - make him suicide...) >:)
Some poor sap leave his tank just laying around? Hack and repo that sucker! Bam! its now yours. (this has happened, a tanker jock without gunners hopped out to hack the supply depot and got pasted, then I hacked his tank and gunned for a pro driver for most of the remaining match time.

yup K/D doesn't matter (unless you're playing ambush mode)
I myself have just recently (re)discovered the joys of a repair tool, sure it doesn't get you kills, but it keeps the heavy alive and the tanks strong.
and fill gunner positions, cant be stressed enough... |

I'd trade one of those 'smart' guys sitting on a tower with a sniper rifle or dropship that rack up a 20/1 K/D for a newbie in militia gear that dies 15 times while trying to capture canons any day. The newbie at least makes himself useful.
So just keep going. I started out with a K/D way below 1 too. Now things are looking much better. |

A few things:
Hit detection is buggier than a bait shop right now, so it does affect your shooting.
Players who have been in this beta longer and/or play for longer periods skill up faster due to grinding, and their gear is superior to yours.
Try out different roles, use your three character slots like a cheap ***** - find what works or appeals to you.
I can't pilot a dropship to save my life, but my niche and contribution is in deployments and support. I'm in my forties in real life, so my reaction time is not as fast as it used to be, but I 'get' trajectory and ballistic weapons like the mass driver (and spent several years in three different Tribes series games playing heavy mortar offense and defense, lol.) I play to my strengths, and went positive on my match kd/r several times today with just the mass driver launcher.. (beaned a sniper on one of the buildings in skirmish with a mass driver grenade, lol.)
You'll find your niche.
At the end of the game, though, its who controls the most objectives who wins the match - as long as you are trying to contribute (more than can be said for some players) then you are not useless. |

I hear you, mate. I was enjoying myself, but after a couple of weekends where I couldn't play as much my SP acquisition fell behind and suddenly I felt like I was shooting spitballs at rhinos. I had my brother watching me play and he commented that "it'd be no fun to log in to die over and over like that". And it wasn't. But I persisted.
I'll never catch up to those streaking ahead in SP, but I'd say some of the advice you've gotten here is solid:
* Hit the turrets - my best session so far in terms of kills ranked up has been at the controls of a stationary turret, and I always have a great deal of fun if I can man the guns of a tank or dropship that has a good pilot behind the wheel. There's a reason that the stationary turrets get targeted so quickly - they can be extremely deadly, regardless of how many SP you have.
* Specialize - find your niche and stick with it. At this stage, since I'm clearly no good at run and gun with my peashooter, I'm focusing on what I feel and work like and skilling towards a big, slow fella who focuses on taking out vehicles, or getting into them. Or heading away to the borders of the conflict to start hacking whatever I can when I notice we're losing ground.
* Get yourself a keyboard - I'm yet to do this myself, but as a PC/EVE gamer it's definitely on the cards. The difference between me playing Battlefield 3 on a console and on a PC, as with most, is marked enough to check it out if console based play is giving you the same trouble as myself.
Having said all that, I am concerned at how the disparity in SP can leave newcomers and players who don't keep up feeling like they're logging in to be a target, but if matchmaking works as intended this won't be as much of a turn-off as I'm already feeling it will be. |

One thing I learned straight away is upgrade asap. The standard gun on assault is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. When creating a character at the start of the game I seem to do better selecting scout and using that with an assault class. When I tried being an assault character and then using an assault class I couldn't do well to save my life, maybe it's just a mind thing lol. I'm new to it all so it's just a case of experimenting. |

Thank you everyone for the advice and encouragement. I have been doing what many of you have suggested and have gotten into some decent matches riding as tank gunner. I have also done a lot of objective hacking. I guess it doesn't matter how many kills you get as long as you are supporting the team in some way. |

I'm slowly starting to find my way as well after reading some helpful tips on the board. The best tip so far was how to turn the voice chat on. Game feels hella alive now.
Those guns do feel like pea shooters but, not the sniper rifles though. It feels real good taking out the heavies with them.

Weaponry is pretty much the only universal "must have" skill when you're first starting out. Maxing it out gives you +25% for EVERY weapon you use (the Nova Knife MAY be an exception to this, but I think it buffs this as well). Anything else will, to some extent, depend on your build. Other things are important, but nothing else will be as universally important. |
