Things got shakey after that, but assuming a subscription system would have totally changed Dusts history, myself and many others would more than likely still be playing (and paying). At this point, knowing what I know about CCP and their business practices, I wouldn't play another free CCP game, much less a paid game.

I don't see it happening. They can't compete with fps games that are out now. Only us truly loyal stick around to play. I have several friends who have given up on this lagfest of a game and moved on to bigger and better. DUST IS DEAD......End of Story..............

Basically you can play DUST for free on PC, but if you play EVE and link your account you would receive a set of items each month for your dust char as well as perhaps 25% passive SP gain. Items could be a special BPO set when you first sign up then each month after you could get 7day omega active booster. 20k AUR and a few disposables. EVE works out at about $17 a month ($35 60d GTC) so one sub for both games is quite a bargain plus it'd perhaps encourage some EVE players to give DUST a try as they get more for their money Please fix my C-II hitpoints!! Jesus and I love you :)

Some follow a hybrid model, for example Destiny doesn't require PS+ for basic online interaction but does require it for higher end content such as Raids and special PvP events. Overall PS+ is extremely affordable. Even if you pay the full price of $50 for a year (and you can often find discounts at retailers like Amazon), it comes out to a little over $4 a month which is like a cup of Starbucks...very reasonable. Dust could compete if it was a finished game... hell dust is the best FPS I've ever played (sure it doesn't work right most of the time and you get game breaking lag) but compare dusts tactical thinking requirements to cod or battlefield and you see their shortcomings In all they do. On dust you don't just worry about what weapons your using you have to worry about how your suits fitted what race it is what it can and can't do how fast it can kill how long can it not be killed. In other fps you only worry about your weapon and that's it and that's why in most dust players eyes dust is the best game ever. Suffice it to say if another game came out with dusts fitting capabilities we would all go there and leave this pitiful trash heap and burn it "It's like a porcupine with down syndrome... you know it wants hugs but they don't know the pain they cause..."

But they wanted their microtransactions I guess, and the payback was no monthly subscriptions. I think monthly subscriptions would have instilled more commitment into the players.

Ah, so that probably explains why I see so many running around in cheap suits with expensive (usually AUR) weapons! The most expensive weapons are only like 10% more DPS than the cheap basic models. It's far more important to survive the firefight unless you can catch them by surprise.

Can look at it like Xbox one and PS4 is now like any other fps, just it would be PC Dust and PS4 Dust why draw a line in the sand? yeah yeah different networks so what you can have same chats channels now. So why not both, so what you will not be in the same fights as your corp m8's who cares, it ups the numbers of over all players, can my EvE guys come down and do dog fights now?
