It really is. Sit back and take the time to think about it. As a gamer, how appealing is DUST514 as a title? It isn't.
To a person unfamiliar with the game, this title makes no sense. Is it a game about dust particles? What does 514 stand for? What genre is it?
Even the veterans of the game don't know what DUST514 stands for and I'm willing to bet Rattati doesn't know as well. At least titles like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Counter-Strike, etc. make some sense. They even give some indication as to what type of games they each are.

One more thing... How ambiguous is 514?
If I didn't already know that it's said as "five one four," I'd be confused to all hell as what to make of it.
Is it five-hundred fourteen? Is it fifty-one four? Is it five fourteen? |

Well Skylanders was taken and doesn't at all accurately describe this game, so the only other name available on the 2009 Video Game Names list with the Icelandic Copyright Office was DUST 514. And only that because DUST 513 was already claimed by a swedish death metal band.

OK, so let me explain to you what "Dust 514" means.
So, we have the "Dust" part. It is most likely to be a reference to Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. Simple enough.
Now, we have the 514 part of the name. I don't know exactly what is means (Wasn't Dust released on 5/14?), but I have found This Chronicle that may be of interest. In short, it tells of some of the Dust clones having horrible visions of blood-red skies, strange beings (probably sleepers or something), and the number 514 written in blood. 514 is probably like the New Eden version of 666 by now.

514 is a disease. It subjects the clone into extreme lunacy, the writing in blood and stuff you said. This is beta knowledge. It is known to be fatal. Ofc newberries wouldn't know because not much else has been stated lore wise in DUST. We hardly have lore, so we cling to EVE lore as our guide.
I is not speaking to you, i am just using your quote as emphasis. People, please read the chronicles, it is of great help in your learning of lore.

In the context of the lore in New Eden, DUST 514 is an excellent title.
The DUST part is best explained by an old, damn near technically dead valklear who is mostly cybernetic. I don't have the exact quote, but the gist is:
"We all came from the DUST. Some day we will return to the Dust... But not them."
(referring to the first templars)
"...and I will commute your flesh to DUST."

Sansha's Nation is my favorite part of the lore of EVE. I made my capsuleer in his image sort of, reserving him as my EVE forumer and lore seeker. I don't play EVE, it boring.

iirc CCP Logibro was the only one who figured it out on his own and no-one else has since then.
The lore and stuff like release date is speculatory, but there is a real meaning to it that we haven't figured out yet.

I get part of what you mean but Rattati definitely knows what 514 stands for, as do I and many others, I've even screen-shotted the forum post so I never forget it!
The bit I agree with is, it's not appealing, you do have to be "in the know" and yes, a lot of people wouldn't even know it's a shooter.
It has appeal but it doesn't jump out at you. |
