You what it's missing?
A fear factor.
Heavies are known to tank and shred you with hmgs or one hit your lav and wipe you out
Assaults are known for quickly and effectively taking out targets
Scouts are known for their deadly knives and shotguns.
Logis- aren't really fighters but we all hate jumpy mass drivers.
Commandos? Aside from the minmatar and gallente with good av, they suck, can't stack as much hp as assaults, can't rep as quick, can't run as fast, can't hack as fast, and kill as fast, any jump as high,
They suck and have really no fear factor. Plus they are SUPER SQUISHY.
So what can be done about them?
Idk. That's up for everyone to decide.
Keep in mind that the main focus would be caldar and amarr commandos as the min/gal are effective at av

More stamina and stamina regen, more main tank (Caldari shield regen / gallente armour regen / Minmatar speed? / Amarr armor hp).
Maybe increase the 2% per level of damage to 3%? This way, Assaults have no chance of catching up to a commando xk.0 |

More speed is a must with those hitboxes. I feel like each race could use a buff to its respective tank as well, just slightly though. Gal would get more armor regen, amarr more base armor, cal more base shield and min should get shield regen as I don't like buffing its speed twice.
The alternative to giving them more tank is an extra slot. Do two of these three things and I think commandos will be a real threat and start to move out of, or at least really shine at support.

Give The Calmando a bonus to Explosives as well (as they arguably use missiles more than the Minmatar) and add a light laser AV weapon. Now all commandos are very versatile and can take on both infantry and vehicles effectively with the same fit.
We want cake and tea.

You give up way to much for some extra damage and ehp. The base vs most other suits are kind of awful.
Slow, low stamina, poor self healing factor and absolutely no eWar and with no chance of changing it due to low slot count.

1) Speed. Tank is second highest in the game. It's the hitbox and the sluggishness that kills you.
2) A third suit bonus. People seem to forget that it's a specialist suit, in the same tier as assaults, sentinels and scouts, and whilst those suits enjoy three bonuses (typically, one fitting and two unique), the commando is left with just two. An EWAR themed bonus would be helpful.
3) Speaking of which, EWAR. Worst in the game, excluding sentinels, who don't really need it; if they turn a corner and it's full of reds, well...HMG, right? On the other hand, commandos can be seen by everyone and can see nothing, save a sentinel at close range. Which is not optimal to say the least. And they can't sacrifice slots for EWAR modules because they have the lowest slot count in the game.
4) Which they need for reps and biotic so. Specifically, cardiacs. The commando is at its best when it's used as a marauder that flanks, harasses enemy positions and targets vehicles. Speed is needed, but so too is stamina. They do need to be able to move around the battlefield for sustained periods of time so that they can bring their weapon load outs to the right fight. Stamina regen on commandos is shockingly bad.
5) I do really like the cloak idea. I don't think it should be a scout-only piece of equipment. Giving them an extra equipment slot and the third bonus as a cloak fitting bonus would make the commando a unique suit to play with. Strategic movement, surprise attacks with AV load outs, and the opportunity to make good on that massive melee strike? Yes please.

Some combo of:
+ a bit of speed + a large amount of stamina & stamina regen + much improved scan precision and THE HIGHEST scan radius + noticeably more main tank regen + second equipment + maybe one slot
Cloak is an interesting one, too, but they're mostly too slow and scannable to use it effectively as they are. Would be excellent for repositioning as a Calmando, though.

You can only use one gun at a time, though. And for that, the commando loses a grenade, which are incredibly useful for all sorts of reasons I'm sure you're aware of.
Two Lights gives the commando enhanced tactical flexibility. It does not give it more firepower. Again, only one gun at a time can be used, and in a firefight you have to factor in more than just your gun; how fast and manoeuvrable are you? How easy are you to hit? How much of a hit can you take? And how fast can you repair after? In all but the HP aspect, the commando is found severely lacking. Against average opponents it can shine, but what suit can't? Throw it a proto min assault, however, and it will be melted in a fraction of a second, and the assault will have barely been scratched.
Now, to be fair, it's not an assault suit, so it shouldn't perform well in the assault role, but still: it's not great at killing stuff. The best commandos I've seen are those that are rocking laser rifles (to make up for the lack of speed and to keep nimbler suits at bay) and dedicated AV platforms, mostly minmandos, because hey guess what - they're the quickest commando and they get to rock combat rifles and swarms. Delicious. It's the only one that works really well. The rest are pretty poor. And it's mainly due to the fact that it's a poorly conceived idea and a badly executed suit design. If you want to fix the commando just rip it all up and start again from scratch.

You realize the only way you could possible make them op that way would be for the gallente and minmatar to have a better option than av right? The amarr only hav 3 weapons, of which all are ....meh.... On commandos. And calmandos are mostly used for sniping.

Melee on a commando? Never heard of it. My dual scrambler pistols always kill them before they can even reload or get near me.

If you see the commando coming, then it's just too easy to step away and plug that fat head of his full of holes. Give them a cloak, however, and that haymaker suddenly becomes a high risk/high reward weapon in the commandos arsenal. They'd be the other side of the coin to the scout role; both are capable of moving into positions that other suits can't, but whereas the scout attacks quickly with burst alpha damage before withdrawing in haste, the commando unleashes a punishing stream of damage from a flanking position, or blaps an entrenched tank with a shot to its weaker rear plating, and isn't afraid to take some return fire in the process. A thinking man's assault suit, if you will.

WHAT IF we got rid of commandos, gave assaults 2 light weapons, took away those side arms, and made them the true assault/suppressors?
And to balance them out against other dropsuits, take away the damage bonus.
Give scouts/heavies a bonus to sidearms to make those counter the assaults light weapons?
Look at it like this
Assault- 2 light small bonus to both weapons. 1.racial bonus
Scout- 1 light- 1 side arm. Side arm damage bonus (to counter second light weapons of assaults
Heavy- 1 heavy, change their side arm to a light weapon or keep side arm of you feel it will be op.
If you do give heavy light, give scout a second side arm.
The last and final option would be to remove them.
They are all effective at AV, the swarm bonus isnt THAT big of a deal.
The problem is they are slow, fat, scannable, and with low HP, often they are run with AV or a sniper rifle alternate light weapon so you also have no "sidearm" when in ~half the fits commandos are used for.
Im not sure how I would fix these suits, giving them all significantly better regen would be a good first step, all kinds of regen. Native armor reps, some decent shield regen (20-40 shp/s or so for all of them depending on which suit), and much quicker regen delays. The Cal Commando in particular needs a ~1-3 second depleted delay like the cal sentinel/scout. |

What they need is extra survivability. They're fine in terms of damage and tactical role, the problem is simply how easy they are to kill. Survivability comes from two things : - The ability to avoid trouble - The ability to get out of trouble
Commandos are the suckiest of all suits at both (even logis are better). They should get a buff in each of these categories.
The first one can be achieved by an ewar buff, they need to be stealthier and have at least the scan precision of assaults.
For the second one, a slight speed buff and a regen buff should be enough.
Having the sentinel slot layout (so a fifth module) would also be justified. Sentinel has 1 heavy weapon and one sidearm, commando two light weapons. Fair Sentinel has grenades, commandos has equipment. Fair Sentinel has 5 modules, commandos 4. Why? |

Okay a little info...... I love heavy class suits..... commando being one of the heavies I run......I have skilled into every weapon and every suit.... even though I go on sprees using commandos..... I gave up on the amarr commando and Caldari..... i couldn't find an effective fit for the amarr. The Caldari just had so little pg..... Overall the United problem with them is their slow speed,shield regain (for the minmitar and especially Caldari), Ewar is useless on them, and just the inability to really frontline using any of them.
One might say... I'm very skilled... yet I'm his apprentice... So what does that say about my mentor?
