They suck and have really no fear factor. Plus they are SUPER SQUISHY.
So what can be done about them?

Keep in mind that the main focus would be caldar and amarr commandos as the min/gal are effective at av
WHAT IF we got rid of commandos, gave assaults 2 light weapons, took away those side arms, and made them the true assault/suppressors?
And to balance them out against other dropsuits, take away the damage bonus.
Give scouts/heavies a bonus to sidearms to make those counter the assaults light weapons?
Look at it like this
Assault- 2 light small bonus to both weapons. 1.racial bonus
Scout- 1 light- 1 side arm. Side arm damage bonus (to counter second light weapons of assaults
Heavy- 1 heavy, change their side arm to a light weapon or keep side arm of you feel it will be op.
If you do give heavy light, give scout a second side arm.
The last and final option would be to remove them.
They are all effective at AV, the swarm bonus isnt THAT big of a deal.
The problem is they are slow, fat, scannable, and with low HP, often they are run with AV or a sniper rifle alternate light weapon so you also have no "sidearm" when in ~half the fits commandos are used for.
Im not sure how I would fix these suits, giving them all significantly better regen would be a good first step, all kinds of regen. Native armor reps, some decent shield regen (20-40 shp/s or so for all of them depending on which suit), and much quicker regen delays. The Cal Commando in particular needs a ~1-3 second depleted delay like the cal sentinel/scout. |

The major thing this does is give the commando absolute versatility to make up for its deficiencies in ther areas (speed, shield regen, etc).
Dont forget grenades, in point defense or point assault grenades are A Big Deal |
