Remember the This is EVE trailer? Remember how successful it was, how subscription numbers skyrocketed for the next few months?
The latest official Dust 514 video was from 2013. With the release of player trading, and with PC 2.0 coming in the near future, (hopefully) now is as good a time as ever to get the marketing train going again.
With the resources at CCP's disposal, their promotional video(s) would be better than any publicity Dust has gotten in years. All they need is the desire to display the product they have created.

I totally agree. Ever since their dev team was cut back they haven't done any new marketing or videos. they could even "hire" us mercs to give them good video clips and they could doctor them however they see fit. we could get paid in certain amounts of ISK if they use the clips. There are already a lot of videos out there and if there was a reward for them, probably more people would make higher quality videos. I just watched Sgt Kirk's plasma cannon video. It was awesome. |

Like, I'm entirely serious in that I have a full length video ready to go and what not with a really awesome music track that I have a license to use. I'll post it to youtube when I get off work if you guys are down.
Would be nothing for me to pull some scenes out and replace them with in-game footage, as well.

Heh, you would need a crowbar to fit any more talent into that video. I wasn't trying to make a focus on any one player or corporation, rather a glimpse at the excitement PC can bring.

Do it! The more the community pushes for things like this, the greater the likelihood of CCP doing something about it is.
After all, it benefits their bottom line just as much as it makes our game more fun to play

That's kinda what I was thinking. :) We could introduce this idea of player run marketing with an event with LARGE rewards and after the event people could still submit videos, but for lesser rewards. |

Exactly. They may not have the dev-power to do this kind of thing anymore, but there is a willing player base to do some of, or all of, that work for them! Utilize it! |

I agree Dust has not advertised their game in like what 2years? I think Dust needs PvE , so when people get stressed with the game they can go shoot bots and try out new gear, then they would get their confidence back and go back to shooting Mercs. The goal should be to keep people on the game and not be like what "**** this" in the first 30 mins of playing . And I swear CCP you better be making Legion or I swear i'm guna burn down my village! I WILL BURN DOWN MY VILLAGE!

The end result was of course a huge success, with the community thrilled by getting a chance to be part of the advertising process, and gamers who were too afraid to touch Eve now excited to be a part of it.
This is exactly what the Dust team should do. Get your community involved, let them do the heavy lifting, and then polish it in the way of your choosing. You'll send player happiness through the roof, and may just pick up a few new Dust players along the way.

I believe the time is now. The past 12 or so months of DUST have been the best of 3 years... and the improvements keep getting better and better.

I especially like the panorama panning shots in the beginning.
I believe Dust has some truly beautiful environments with a lot of macro details. It's just a shame it's easily missed in the heat of battle, thus giving Dust the reputation as an ugly game based on the close-up textures.
When bored (or massive stomps) I tend to just go for a "walk" and soak in the atmosphere.
Tip: Could be interesting to see a "time lapse" of the backdrops / moods. |

I think this pretty much sums up what I want to say about the topic. We want Dust to prosper, more players will ensure that. We want more community involvement, a player driven event will do that.
How can we do both? A This is Dust trailer following the template already proven successful by our Eve counterparts.
I'll support just about any thread or topic concerning this matter, but I think this video is my contribution. Thank you for your kind words, but a whole bunch of people asking for this will do more than just me making a bunch of threads on my own.

I was hoping someone would notice that! You can imagine how hard it was to get rid of the HUD, and then find a span of five seconds or so without having anything pop up on the killfeed.
I had originally had it to where there was no weapon in my hands as I rotated, but it didn't look quite right.
And yes! Time lapse stuff is really cool. You can be sure I'll mess around with it in the future

What you say is true, but I try to maintain a positive attitude about the whole thing.
Clearly the Legion situation makes any advertising attempt for Dust a bit... Questionable. But when we look at the Roadmap, at what Rattati has done in such a short time, it's hard not to feel like we've advanced a great deal. And until Legion is a thing, CCP cannot afford to let go of what has proven to be a profitable venture.
They say you have to spend money to make money, but a marketing campaign like This is EVE is brilliant, simply because of the ridiculously low amount of investment it takes to do. Dev blogs? Interviews? Snazzy CGI effects? No. Get your already loyal players to do that for you.
And if Legion is a thing, for the love of god announce it and begin your promotions for that in the exact same way, using the foundations your customers have built for you.

CCP made commercials and advertisements for the game. They neglected to air them due to shame at how the game turned out.

Before we got into open beta, or before the game "released" they were doing crap tons of advertising, and lying, there was so much excitement for the game. Agreed. Dust is not anywhere near perfect, certainly, but those that love it love it a lot. Completely up to you to decide whether it's worth putting your time and effort back into it, but I'm glad you're giving it another chance.
If this Fanfest was any indication, I hope CCP continues to put the focus on the tangible community, rather than hopes and dreams.

My personal feedback is that the big key thing about "This is EVE" was both the player voices/experience, and the fact that everything in the video was an experience you could have in game. (Even if relatively unlikely.) Whereas many of the trailers CCP did, which was your primary material, show unrealistic perceptions of EVE and DUST.
The actual transitions and timing and stuff was pretty solid though. :)

I doubt there will ever be marketing for the game. The fact there was none at the release of the game is surprising but there is no way it will happen now. Few reasons:
1. The game is making money now. Will putting more money into marketing cause a higher yield than what was put into?
2. "Hey, try out this game that came out two years ago on a system that you have probably moved on from!" Doesn't quite work.
3. Tinfoil time; maybe CCP wants DUST to not be too remembered. If DUST ever transitions to a different system, it might not allow us to bring over our SP and Aurum purchases. Not hyping DUST means that there is potential for us to not be as angry when we get screwed with the industrial auger.
4. More tinfoil; DUST is not a great game. It has gotten some pretty rough reviews. If DUST ever transitions, they might not want people to remember what DUST is.
5. There are so very few people working on this game, the lead QA guy works on several different projects, the only signs of life from our Executive Producer is a group picture from FanFest 15 and I frankly wouldn't be surprised if it was a Weekend at Bernie's thing. Is there enough resource, energy, and will to create a marketing campaign? I don't believe so.

Remember, we don't want to be creating anymore trailers of things we do not have right now. CCP did that and it didn't work (it backfired). Actually, 100% transparency doesn't quite make everything disappear. The process is actually quite simple, and I'll highlight it in a different video. There's actually a way to get rid of your weapon entirely, in addition to clearing the HUD, but that's another story :P

CCP ran a contest this year asking people to make their own version of "This is EVE" and they showed multiple contestant videos at Fanfest. I imagine CCP would have to ask for the rights to use such a video, but I assume the game EULA mostly claims all things transmitted over the game are CCP's license to use anyways.

If you ever plan to make future iterations or other "This is Dust" videos consider taking a bit of time to get some dialogue from Dust Uni lectures, etc and staging "training simulation" clips.
As I keep saying I like this video the more I watch it but PC is not the only area to have squads with good communications nor are competitive PC corporations to the sole existing corporations in the game.

Outer Heaven - Molden Heath/ Competitive
Heck I think you could even stage Tank columns , DS squadrons, LAV and Scout Ops as well. Videos like this can show EVE players that we can achieve similar levels of organisation, dedication, and execution in our own ways and that we have a diverse community with different goals and skill sets.

I chose PC simply because it is the defining feature of Dust, and wouldn't be hard to illustrate to those unfamiliar with it. That said, It would be great to show a larger slice of Dust, like the Eve trailer did, and highlight the entire community.
A tank columns would be amazing, indeed

Now that Warlords 1.1 will be coming out, I have plans to host another lecture this coming Saturday on behalf of Dust University to touch up on certain things. Looks like I was beat to it. I wanted to make something like this as well.
Excellent job and great work. I love the touch at the end with the different victory screens. It's like the commenter on your video said: "Gives it a global feel."
