While that's true, its a matter of degree. It should be feasible for someone to unlock trading with a reasonable amount of effort and not paying. I'm not entirely sure how long it would take to unlock trading without paying, but if it's taking you know like....6 months to do, that's pretty ridiculous for a feature which is common to online games coming out of the gate.
I understand the intention of the Loyalty Rank limitation, but I think we need to take a hard look at exactly how long it will take someone to reach that with reasonable play and no AUR spent.

My main is Rank 3 almost rank 4 that had him since Jan 2013.
Have not bought aurum because I put the needs of my family first and I have taken months off at a time because of work and family.

"RANK" is a military-style vanity thing. It was never a component of Dust 514, (in my mind it even brings up terms like Private, and Corporal that don't fully fit into this removed-from-humankind New Eden fantasy idea that CCP created), and I suspect it was only added to the game to please the competitive fps gunnies amongst us. Guy with a Gun--gotta reach top-score, gotta have "gold" icon on suit or next to name, so he can strut to those who don't have yet.
It's a great idea because they know many of you GOTTA have a "Rank"-ing to display in your gaming, or you'll just bust!
It's also the reason, (a very good reason, a smart decision) to attach AURUM to the Rank fever. Also, if you notice, the really effective benefits from rank, such as ISK % increase, Resale % increase, etc, don't reach any worthwhile numbers until Rank-8 or so.
It's so DEVILISHLY New Eden of them---I love it. I'm immune to this whole Rank thing (I hit the "hide-rank" option in my matches), and couldn't care less is my Rank ever reaches '3'. But I have to say it's clever.
Anyone who claims CCP is a team of designers who don't know what they're doing,.. HA. They know what they're doing. And the Ranking-hook is working perfectly as intended.

I agree that improving the LP XP formula is probably a good idea. In a way, having the AUR cost to hit LR 4 so cheap could create opportunities for abuse. You could set up 5 accounts with 3 characters churning out warbarge components for $100 for example, all able to trade. Assuming all 5 accounts have the factory upgraded to level 2 (probably higher) then you're looking at 4,500 components per day. I'm pretty sure it costs a lot more than $100 to get your factory to level 5 where it's only making 600/day.

P2W is such a lame buzzword. People love to toss it around in order to make a situation seem worse.

I did spend money on dust, i bought a merc pack...just kept the AUR in hopes of more BPO stuff. i bought it because it was worth the price and i wanted to throw ccp some money.
And i've been with the game 2 years now. Yet i'm not Loyal enough to trade? Sorry if i'm missing something.

You think someone who has played the game for only 30 minutes but spent over $100 should have a say on anything?
Tell me, what would happen if all the players that didn't spend any money on Dust were to just stop playing and leave? You will have a very small player pool left. Matchmaking and game queues get screwed, and the remaining paying players will become unhappy with the small player pool. They too will start dropping out and Dust is left with a player pool size which isn't enough to sustain CCP's finances.
Tl;dr
Time spent on a game also equates to loyalty and deserves the same respect.
