I'm happy new players can catch up more quickly. I do worry though about how this is compatible with a 10+ year plan for DUST & Legion. There is going to be a lot of rage if SP doesn't carry over to Legion.

LOL, it's not 4th of November yet--the cap hasn't happened yet. You can't really be sure how your gameplay behavior is going to change until you ACTUALLY start working with the new cap. NOTHING in Dust has happened until the Uprising Patch actually activates. LOL, why do ya love to torture yourself by speculating on your own reactions?
...We will see. I won't make my decisions until a week after I've tried it out.

I disagree, Legion should have a fresh start. Or at least dump all the Dust players into a separate server... Who wants more new player farming? |

Yes, I'm very happy.
The amount if time it took to obtain all the Skills needed to be even a remote challenge to veterans was far too much, which made even Public Contracts unplayable for most new players.
Now that it won't take half a year to be competitive, we should see an increase in player retention and perhaps even more balanced matches, as more and more players will be able to put up a fight.
Sure, you can earn a lot of SP via SP Boosters, but after you get your cores maxed it doesn't help you win at all. The only thing you'd be accomplishing is increased versatility, something that can be done for free anyways.

So let's go with your suggestion for a minute and wipe the slate clean. What happens in 2 years after Legion's launch when once again there is a huge SP disparity between new and old players? Are you going to do another SP reset to 0? It's not a viable long term plan. The real problem is how to integrate low SP players and high sp players. The way to do this is with an optional academy mode for players under 5 mill SP. Combine this with a larger player population and better matchmaking and you've got a long term solution that doesn't involve pissing off the most dedicated supporters of the game.

Most of that SP will go to vets, they will top the leaderboards and get the lion's share of each match. Since it gains you less advantage at higher levels though it should end up leveling the player field a bit, which is a good thing.

TBH I don't mind the new cap at all. If Newbies can reach me at a certain rate that Also Means I can outrun them At the same pace effectively keeping the gap as large as I want to keep it. When I am satisfied with the amount of SP I have I will stop buying boosters, If I want a new proto I'll buy some more and done.
It would have been better if they did this years ago but hey, it's going to be here now and we might as well take advantage of it.

An increase to the current weekly cap was definitely needed, almost quadrupling it however, was a little excessive.
I'd say 380k SP would be better, especially considering those willing to buy AUR can now triple stack active + passive boosters. There's just not enough skills in the game to warrant a cap this high.
I'm by no means against the average player catching up to those of us who have an abundance of SP; The disparity between new players & vets needs to be lessened or the game will never move forward.
I just fear that a few months from now, those of us who already have most the skill trees we want maxed out will have nothing left to look forward to. (Which goes against everything that makes Dust great.)
So in conclusion, be careful what you wish for.

So I rarely buy boosters *EDIT* (I bought one, and that was for the Million Clone challenge, so I don't now how they work in "normal" weeks), so my answer to this thread is based on 1 question. To those people who are triple stacking boosters, does that mean they will simply reach the 750k cap 3 times faster, or does it mean they will get 3x the total SP for the week?
If it is simply reaching the cap quicker, I can handle 750k. I won't ever reach it but it isn't totally extreme. However, if someone can triple stack and pull in 2.25 MILLION SP a week? Nope, too much. WAY too much.

Seriously? 2.2 Million a week? People are going to going from 0-proto every other week in a new suit. I don't ever come close to capping out now. With this formula, a brand new, fresh merc out of the academy, if s/he is willing to pay some money, will catch and surpass me in total SP in under 3 months (I'm at about 21 million SP right now). This is the definition of pay to win. I've had to grind for a year and a 1/2 (I did take a hiatus in the middle and I have other obligations outside this game) to get to that point. Someone can walk in, throw some cash around, and surpass me in total SP in 1/6th the time simply because they are willing to pay? If this is the case, why have a cap at all? Let people stack 5 Omega Boosters with no cap and let people hit 10 million a week. Or 20 Million a week. At what point WILL it be too much for you?

This new cap is gonna ruin all the purpose of Dust. We play Dust because we know it's hard, but when we finally succeed, it's rewarding. We waited 1 month and a half to get this proto suit we cherish, then spent months to get some passives that changes everything, and worked hard to have good weapons.
Now what? You'll stack 3 omegas and you'll go for 3M SP per week : 1 full proto suit from lvl 0 basic to 5 racial. 1 DAMN WEEK !?
And all of these scrubs are happy because they'll finally have what they dont deserve.
Why would anyone play a game with 0 challenge constantly screwed up -update after update - by the dev team?

Let's see.
This char has 39 mil sp
My alt has 24 mil sp
My tanker has 18 mil sp
Iv spent -ú1000+ to hoard isk and run isk less proto fits for over the almost 2 years now.
Im not mad that players can catch up. They won't reach anything I can't do or gain anything unobtainable. They can pay to skip the grind for all I care. They cannot reach some magical op level and we can also earn more than the cap at something like x3 the rate. You yourself can earn the pre 1.9 cap x3 faster as well.
Anyway, you didn't actually state why its too much, you just gave me your selfish opinion.

OP,
I think the new cap is a fantastic development. I'm excited for all the new bros who will become competitive far more quickly and all the vets who will get to enjoy the pleasures of exploring other roles. Take it from a 70 mil SP vet, we all win with this new cap.

If it is simply reaching the cap quicker, I can handle 750k. I won't ever reach it but it isn't totally extreme. However, if someone can triple stack and pull in 2.25 MILLION SP a week? Nope, too much. WAY too much. Why is that way too much though?. By what standards is that actually too much?. Let's see. This char has 39 mil sp My alt has 24 mil sp My tanker has 18 mil sp Iv spent -ú1000+ to hoard isk and run isk less proto fits for over the almost 2 years now. Read my post above and you'll see why.
It's not even about money, nor selfishness, it's the entire goal of the game on which they are sh!tting on. A MMORPG (FPS too for Dust) is based on constant grinding. What makes it attractful is the challenge to have everything you want, with 1.9, there will be no challenge.
You can add me in the NO list.

Yeah I read your post.
What you find attractive in a game (grinding for ages) is not what everyone appreciates, its that simple. Dusts stats have also backed that up and the game is nice and stable and we can expect to actually keep players now.
Anyone who has played dust long enough can see this is a good thing provided they aren't short sighted and just mad that they no longer have such a large advantage 90% of the time through sp utility.
You still have all your stuff, your stuff isn't going to magically become obsolete, the new players aren't going to obtain anything you don't already have or can't get, they will have no actual advantage.
They might get ahead sure, but they'll pay out the arse for it and by your own logic, shouldn't you be mad at beta vets?.
Ah also, that's pretty dim of you. There will be no challenge with newbs getting competitive quickly but there is with gaining sp?.
That is so backwards, go play destiny or wow.

Good for new players. Not good for balance between casual and hardcore players. I'm never gonna cap out again with my current life state which doesn't make me happy, but then again i just reached 50mill SP so i'm not so worried about big SP investments. It's just sad i won't cap out every week.

And you are absolutely entitled to your opinion and if you feel that way, bravo. I just feel it is going to throw everything even MORE out of balance. Who is usually on top of the boards at the end of the match? Vets. Which means they will get more SP then they used to. Which is going to create an even LARGER gap between the casual and hardcore, new player and veteran. Honestly, no one but Vets have a realistic snowball's chance in hell of coming close to capping out (newer players will rage quit well before they even come close once they are out of the battle academy. Fair play but we didn't seem to have a problem with keeping millions of sp from beta now did we?, oh no.
What is this almost obsession or utmost important attitude with capping out?, I really don't get it.
Why are people behaving like the game is ruined partly because they don't have the time to cap out?. Its really not that important and if you are a vet, then you should care the least about it because you've got sp.
You are aware that you yourself will ve able to earn sp at something like x3 the rate now right?, sp costs aren't going up either. Nothing is actually going to change except that newbs can get up to our Kevel or if they put in the time, then they could get ahead. If they want to pay out the arse and support the game in doing so, then good stuff right?.
If they get ahead, how does that actually have a detrimental effect on you other than less stomping and more challenge?.

*Numbered for clarity in answering, hope you don't mind* First and foremost, that entire comment is a fair opinion and makes a lot of sense. Now to answer the questions...
1. Yes, I was an open player Vet for like the last month or so before it actually "went live". So I think I had like 1.5 million or so SP by that time. I will admit I was O.K. with keeping it, but wouldn't have minded if they had stated a reset of SP.
2. As for capping out, I've never gotten the obsession either. I've done it once the entire time I've played (the last Million Clone Challege. Like I said, I never come even close so it is something I don't worry about.
3. Same as #2. However, like I said, I'm only on about 21 million total, so I'm not as loaded as some people are.
4. Yep, I completely understand that and I'm not going to complain when I start banking 7500-10k SP in a match without a booster. I have a couple things I'm working on right now and that additional SP is going to come in extremely handy. As for paying out the arse, I see what you're saying there as well. It's not my wallet, so why should I care. Something along those lines?
5. You don't know me very well. I'm not a stomper by any means. In fact I'm probably the furthest thing from a stomper their is. I have a sub 1.0 KDR, regularly get my butt handed to me in 1 vs. 1 engagements, and if I wasn't running Logi suits and dropping uplinks/nanohives I would probably never even be in the top 1/2 of WP's in any match I play. LOL
All that said, and looking at your comments, I'm starting to agree with you. That is one of the most logical explanations I've seen as to the positives of the cap increase. What the hell is happening here? A forum discussion that is actually changing an opinion? Say it ain't so.

I usually do nothing but joke about, but I'm seeing so much glass is half empty that I feel I need to actually get serious on this one.
You are right with your opinion but I promise you that overall, you'll end up liking its benefits and you won't notice anything different except better quality fights. Even if the newbs get proto in say a month, maybe a bit more, it will simply be double the fun a gunfight.
Sure thing we had to grind to fk and even pay for uvts just to chat in channels at one point as well, but this decision will undoubtedly give the game longevity and in that, we get to play it longer.

One thing that definitely can't hurt is the possible increase to the player base. If more people are playing, that is going to limit the times someone runs into the same proto-stomping squad 5-6-8 matches in a row. I am all for longevity because once this game goes dark or to Legion, I'm done. I don't have the cash to shell out $1500 on a gaming computer.

I don't think you got my point TechMed. I don't care that new players can have better gears easily. It's nice for them and will make games more competitive (we'll see^^ Blueberries can be really stupid).
The problem with that new SP cap is that it'll be TOO easy. There will no longer be this feeling of "ok I have to make a choice now: this skill or this one? Hmm it'll take some time anyway." This is what make Dust a long lifetime/ durability game.
With so much SP every week, what used to make Dust a game based on choices and SP decisions will be gone. And to me it was the best part of it.
Dust is one of these games that you can't finish in 1 week, and that even after 1 year you still have skills to earn. Now it'll just go so fast that in 2 months everybody will have everything and it'll be boring as hell..

None of that mattered after the damage fan fest did so the game must change accordingly. With the way the game is going, it needs to be more easily accessible for newer players on every level. Please define too much in a factual manner, you can't, that's just your opinion.
With so much SP every week, what used to make Dust a game based on choices and SP decisions will be gone. And to me it was the best part of it.
With more sp every week, they will still matter and you can make more choices that matter, whatever that means to you (grinding sht loads it seems).

I'm not happy at all. This game will become pay-to-win for new players. Differences between a veteran who doesn't pay and an other who pay will be astronomic. The new players who pay will very fast have the same SP as a veteran. We will skill a dropsuit in 1 or 2 weeks, where will be the pleasure of skilling a suit ? And envy it for so long time ? With this cap, the game will lose his soul.
Increase de cap, ok, but max. x2, not x4...
Nice....

EVE Online is what you get when engineers attempt to create "fun" without consulting someone who comprehends the word.

TechMechMeds wrote:[quote=Sequal Rise]I don't think you got my point TechMed.
Dust is one of these games that you can't finish in 1 week, and that even after 1 year you still have skills to earn. Now it'll just go so fast that in 2 months everybody will have everything and it'll be boring as hell..
Congratulations mystic Meg, tell me more hypes about the future.
I get you totally, you just can't see how silly you are being, so you get silly answers.
I do get you, but you are simply ignore some glaringly obvious factors in favour of how you feel it should be. Let's try to answer in this order:
- If you think this way then why even playing the game?? Why having updates? Why having sp if the game is dead? (According to you)
- It's not the grinding that I like, it's the rewards that it gives! Choices will not matter anymore as you'll have so much SP (mostly if you pay) that waiting 1 week more of another proto stuff will not be a hard decision.
- Je vais te les faire bouffer tes hypes moi fdp.
I think you just can't wait to have these SP to have some skill that you always wanted earlier than planned. My answers may be silly to you, but again, you'll understand them later, when you'll have all the SP you ever wished so fast, and will have nothing else to do.
Sorry for my bad english.

I see yours but this whole "choices must matter" ect... It was a good argument 1 year ago but not anymore. Besides you can only use one suit, one gun. Your choice in what you skilled into only counts for a few minutes or however long you are alive in a match. Then when you die at 20m-30m sp you can pick from a countless number of other variations in dropsuit load outs. And that choice will last another few minutes... Forcing noobs to be locked into noob status for so long makes no sense. I won't suddenly become over powered because I can unlock one more gun next week. I already am overpowered in skill. And I already have several guns and dropsuits. If I get a new proto gun and use them all evenly then I only have a 1 out of 6th chance of using that particular weapon, compared to a noob who gets his second gun doubling his choices. being locked into these choices and waiting for over a year to actually get anywhere in this game has done nothing but hold this game back by preventing new players from integrating into the game easily.
Choices and being forced to be locked into skills matter even less since the legion announcement. Alot of people left, and the over all feelings of the playerbase was negative... Drastic changes needed to be made. Ratatti is doing an amazing job at turning things around but this game still has it's flaws.
1. New player experience has always been bad. The new player academy was a fail, and the massive sp gap kept making new players rage and want to quit.... Sure there are other things CCP can do but the dev team for dust got alot smaller as many were transferred to legion. Them increasing the cap is just an easy quick fix because they do not have the manpower to do much else.
2. After 30m+ sp things balance out alot more as a player will have a proto suit and many of their passives. I am forgetting how much passive sp we get but combined with the active sp I am guessing around 1mill a week? A completely free player still has to wait half a year.... Xp events can help but it won't be as difficult for them as in the past.
3. Those who pay, are paying for the server to be kept alive. Stacking sp is just another money making ploy by CCP but again after a certain point... sp starts to be worth less and less. I will be glad more and more people are reaching my level of sp. It would mean for more diverse and competitive matches. Which is fun by my definition.
4. So what if I become a vet with everything unlocked and no more goals? Do I really have to be that obsessed with unlocking new things? I came here to play a game, not grind. One could argue that those are the same thing... but to me the difference is.. Playing is fun, grinding is not. With that said.. If ccp is increasing the gap, I hope they are also increasing ways to earn sp to fill that gap or else the game will be even more of a boring grind. Some people force themselves to cap because they feel like they need to if they want to stay competitive or ever catch up.. Increasing the grind will only burn them out faster so I really do hope they increase the ways of earning sp and not just the cap.
5. I would play this game more if the player base did not completely suck so much. Sp does not equal skill but it does act as a crutch. A bad player in proto is still a bad player, they are just bad with a crutch. Honestly I don't mind. If this ends up giving me more competitive games then I am all for it. Competition makes this game fun for me. If you are not doing serious damage to me, I am not having fun. If I am drinking a beer, not paying attention to a game, and still coming in 1st for wp and kdr... I am not having fun. If you are bored by not having anything to skill into, then maybe what you need is a challenge? Maybe this will provide you with just that opportunity. I know that is what I am hoping for.
6. I am trying to look at the bigger picture. I am trying to look at what is best for the game overall. How can this game have hundreds of people signing up a day with almost a 0 retention rate? All my friends I have introduced this game too refuse to play after trying it for just a short time. NPE is bad and it is destroying this game. Fix NPE and numbers may increase, meaning profits increase, meaning servers stay on longer, meaning more funds to be put forth into more maps, more bpo's and dropsuit designs, more bug fixes and content.
7. We need to let go of this whole 10 year plan and choices must matter stuff. Holding on to these old archaic ideals and beliefs will only force us to continue on this downhill slope the game has been on. A change had to have been made and it should have been made a long time ago. But better late than never right?

To those people who are triple stacking boosters, does that mean they will simply reach the 750k cap 3 times faster, or does it mean they will get 3x the total SP for the week?
If it is simply reaching the cap quicker, I can handle 750k. I won't ever reach it but it isn't totally extreme. However, if someone can triple stack and pull in 2.25 MILLION SP a week? Nope, too much. WAY too much. Why is that way too much though?. By what standards is that actually too much?. At what point WILL it be too much for you? been playing about 7 monnths and i have almost 30 nil sp so why does it matter to you if they pass you up because i got all my sp in about 1/3 of the time that youve played. |
