For a while now I have wanted to compile a list of what dropsuits and infantry weapons players buy the most and therefore are used the most in Dust. Ironically this information is only available through the EVE Online market system.
So today I finally decided to log into EVE and access Dust items on the market and see what I could learn. Needless to say some of the results surprised me in a few areas.
The market data in EVE is pretty daunting as you can review market history up to a year. Originally I was going to do a three month comparison but quickly realized that it might take me three months to compile all of that data. The 30-day history also proved to be too much data for me to organize just to please my curiosity.
So I decided to use the 10-day history. I realize this is not a large period of time, however, this still indicates what players are buying most and the past 10 days included an accelerated SP event so more players were probably active during this time frame.
I decided to only compare ADV and PRO level gear as these are the levels players actually invested SP into and it would shorten the amount of work I had to do by leaving out militia and basic gear. I also need to point out the EVE market does not track officer gear, BPO gear, LP or Aurum items. The market only tracks items that can be purchased in game with ISK. So while this could skew the results some, I donGÇÖt think players are spending LP or AUR much differently than players are spending ISK.
I also understand that market data information can sometimes be subjective because itGÇÖs not a list of items actually used but items bought. Some could say certain suits with certain weapons die less often thus incur less market activity. Unfortunately market data is the only information players have to go off of so letGÇÖs just leave it at that.
Lastly, I want to point out that with all the different weapons and dropsuits I included in this breakdown, there were a ton of numbers. I did my very best to double check all of the results but there is still a possibility a few numbers could be inaccurate, however, I do believe this information is accurate and shows what players bought and used the most during the 10-day period of May 26 -June 4
I will first list the condensed version of the information I gathered and then will place a more detailed list of each item at the end.
Between May 26 and June 4, players bought the following amount of ADV and PRO gear. Percentages listed are the portion of total items purchased within each category.
Dropsuits Scouts GÇô 63,751 (37.6%) Logi GÇô 38,569 (22.8%) Sentinel GÇô 32,532 (19.2%) Assaults GÇô 25,210 (14.9%) Commando GÇô 9,239 (5.5%)
Heavy Weapons Heavy Machine Guns GÇô 57,869 (84.2%) Forge Guns GÇô 10,870 (15.8%)
Light Weapons GÇô I truly expected Combat Rifles to be the number one Light weapon since I seem to die to them all the time, however, the Rail Rifle is still bought more often. Even HMGs were bought more frequently than the CR. But as a scout I tend to fight other scouts most often, many of which use CRs. I also tend to avoid heavies and their death dealing HMGs. So this is one way a players experience can skew their perspective on what weapon/dropsuit is used more often.
Rail Rifle GÇô 60,581 (24.7%) Combat Rifle GÇô 54,285 (22.2%) Assault Rifle GÇô 38,600 (15.8%) Shotguns GÇô 28,675 (11.7%) Scrambler Rifle GÇô 18,169 (7.4%) Sniper Rifle GÇô 17,537 (7.2%) Swarm Launcher GÇô 13,723 (5.6%) Mass Driver GÇô 8,398 (3.4%) Laser Rifle GÇô 3,953 (1.6%) Plasma Cannon GÇô 1,070 (0.4%)
Sidearms GÇô This category is so dominated by the SMG I did not complete a full comparison of each sidearm. Instead I did a simple comparison of the highest single day sales volume during the past 10 days. Even if I did a full 10-day comparison the results would still be the same. The SMG is king of sidearms and I donGÇÖt think that surprises anyone. I love my subby. (Because I did not complete a full comparison of sidearms there is not a full item breakdown at the bottom. This is the only information I will provide on sidearms.)
SMG GÇô 5,922 (54.6%) Magsec GÇô 1,563 (14.4%) Scrambler Pistol GÇô 1,421 (13.1%) Nova Knives GÇô 916 (8.4%) Flaylock GÇô 441 (4.1%) Bolt Pistol GÇô 390 (3.6%) Ion Pistol GÇô 193 (1.8%)
Armor vs. Shield
I expected armor plates to be used much more than shield extenders; however, they were almost even. I believe this is probably because the usefulness of damage modifiers has been reduced and more players are dual tanking as a result. Before 1.8 I am sure the armor plates would have drastically outsold shield extenders.
Armor Plates Basic plate GÇô 112,041 Enhanced plate GÇô 141,041 Complex plate GÇô 60,028
Shield Extenders Basic Shield Extender GÇô 100,781 Enhanced Shield Extender GÇô 87,281 Complex Shield Extender GÇô 125,890
Combined Armor and Shield total Shield GÇô 313,952 (50.1%) Armor GÇô 313,200 (49.9%)
This concludes the condensed version of the information. Below is a full breakdown of the dropsuit and weapons data I collected.

When comparing Armor and Shields you can see where Complex Shield Extenders are significantly better than Basic Shield Extenders while Basic are cheaper, where as with Armor the high HP of the Basic, coupled with the increasing movement penalty makes the Complex Armour Plate only better in certain conditions. That is, there are suits such as Scout suits where you would not use a Complex Plate, while with a Sentinel you would.
It is interesting to see such antidotal analysis actually bared out by the numbers.

I hope this didn't take an incredible amount of time because this is all pretty much auto-generated daily, including consumption, in our data warehouse.
I will and have made it a priority to share more data, if you noticed I have been seeding some of the data in the Feedback threads, for the first time I believe.
One thing to be aware of, is of course that you have had to make choices in data selection (only adv and pro), and we have the ability to slice the data based on behavioral segmentation. What I am saying, is that there is a correlation between most sold on the market and "power" but it doesn't tell the full story.
Good job though and I would love to see some further analysis/insights.

What we can clearly sse is a noticeable dominance in caldari suits. In nearly all areas they the most sold and I guess there fore the most used suits...this coming close to what I experience on the battlefied.
The only part that really surprises me is the caldari heavy beeing dominant as well this is where my battle experience differ as I always got the feeling to encounter more gal sents...
This also shows that RR and CR are still vastly dominating the field whereas the SG is by far less dominant as some forum post and threads seem to suggest. This is quite interesting stuff. I wish I could give you more than on +1

Well I would call roughly 47% of ALL weapon purchases dominant...and SG are less dominant than the AR and only by a relatively small margin more bought than Scramblers...
But in one point you are right RR and CR are not as dominant for light weapons as the SG is for sidearms...

I meant 'not dominant' in the sense of not dominant in effectiveness, which as Rattatti pointed out, these stats don't tell us anything about. In most cases I find a RR user quite an easy kill, for instance. Lots of them just means lots of easy kills.
I have seen the odd SG on heavies and assaults but I really wouldn't say it's common. It's the kind of thing you'd laugh at on coms, which would get old if they were in every game like SG scouts or HMG heavies are. |

The reason Caldari Sentinel heavies are bought is because most will stack damage mods on 'em rather than shield based mods. I have been taken out by advanced even standard Caldari heavies vs my proto Gallante heavy because all they have to do is deck out their suit with damage mods... I'm considering skilling into Caldari heavies just to do the same... |

150 of the DCMA FGs were bought by me, probably half of the bolt pistols, and I can guarantee you that I skewed the sniper tallies since I stockpiled 4k charge snipers back before the price adjustment and only buy tactical occasionally now. On a side note, am I the only one who still uses flaylocks? I know they suck more kitten than the **** industry, but they are occasionally still useful for AV.
Edit: I only ask about the flaylock because there is a good chance that I bought every single one of those, but it is hard to keep track of that POS. |

I am a little surprised to see Caldari Sentinel on top. I expected Amour and Galente to be ahead of it. These numbers do make me proud of the fact that I often run Minmatar Sentinel. I was surprised to see the Caldari have the most bought suit in every category. I did not expect that. The reason Caldari Sentinel heavies are bought is because most will stack damage mods on 'em rather than shield based mods. I have been taken out by advanced even standard Caldari heavies vs my proto Gallante heavy because all they have to do is deck out their suit with damage mods... Pretty stupid to be beaten(barely) by a git that uses damage mod stacking for crutches rather than actually making it a challenge... I'm considering skilling into Caldari heavies just to do the same...
Maybe... maybe not...
One of the reasons for Caldari beeing the most bought (each kind of suit) is also because the clones wearing Caldari gear are the most killed... You wouldn't buy anything you still have enough on stock, would you?
IMPOV these stats show only that the victims are mostly the caldari among us... These die most of the time so they also need to buy more often to fill up their stock... Further, this also shows that the Caldari gear, basically the suits, are quite the weakest...
But this is only my oppinion...
Hail Caldari !!
Hail to the Caldari State !!!

First of all, it only shows that CR and RR are common, not dominant. And second, SG has around half as many purchases as each of CR and RR. Given that SGs are rare on anything other than scouts, and scouts are only 37% of total suit purchases, SG may be the most common weapon on the class that actually uses it (scout). Well I would call roughly 47% of ALL weapon purchases dominant...and SG are less dominant than the AR and only by a relatively small margin more bought than Scramblers... SG may be dominant on scouts but they are rather common among heavies and assaults as well. Just like the CR/ACR is quite common among scouts...
Effectiveness is hard to judge on game experience as it depends on the player you up against. So I have killed quite some RR users with ease while at the same time getting lots of kills with it. In some situation even more than with the CR.
There are some factors you can express or put in numbers. So I work with what I get and the more statistics CCP or some else will release the clearer the picture will be for all of us.
So but based on the numbers both weapons are quite powerful (if not the most powerful rifles out now) and by the numbers provided here this is also reflected... |

Thank you CCP Rattati.
I know the market data can be subjective as far as what is used versus what is bought. At first I wasn't going to do the research because of this fact, but I figured the data still gives us an idea of what players are using most even if that data doesn't provide context for what suits and weapons provide the most survivability.
I know there are times when I'm in the zone and I can play several games in a row with only a few deaths. So I am not buying replacements nearly as much as when I die alot when I'm not in the zone.
I know on the EVE side CCP releases the reports showing item usage and kills by ship and by weapon. Maybe if something like that was produced for Dust it could provide a better gauge of what players are killing with.
Gun control is not about guns...it's about control.
The only way to ensure freedom is by having the means to defend it.

Hahah I think I have contributed a lot to this number since I use the Plasma Cannon every day. Just today I think I might have lost at least 20 or 30 Plasma Cannon so if you multiply that by ten you get about 200 to 300 Plasma Cannon bought by me.
I guess I use up about 18 to 28% of all plasma cannon bought. Fist bump to all the hardcore PLC users lets get that number higher.
EDIT noticed It said ADV and PROTO so number goes down to about 10 to 20... still a big chunk though :S
