It's even useless to tell people to buy a gaming PC because if they didn't until now there's always a good reason. Yep. WE ALL HAVE PCs. We know how to use them. Some of us, like me, have built PCs before. But we don't want to play FPS on PC because for us it is horrible. Is it that hard to understand? |

It's even useless to tell people to buy a gaming PC because if they didn't until now there's always a good reason. First off, I have told no one to buy a PC. And secondly, I have witnessed many forum posters being precisely dumb when it comes to the possibility of entering the PC gaming world. I thought this would help those who are genuinely interested, but uninformed, about PC gaming. Clearly you aren't in that group. Fine. Shoo. If they're here on the forums they can visit websites and Google is always your friend. There's no point in posting such things on a ps3 game forums. It's just like trying to sell Russian Wine in France. Not at all. Firstly, the discussions about PCs have been writ large lately due to Legion. Not all console users are going to get much out of google if they don't know what to look for. TB has summed it up succinctly and in a way that can help inform. Lastly, with Dust transitioning to Legion, there are likely a lot of people here interested in the possibility of getting their first gaming PC (or first one in a while). This thread is for them.
I am in that group.
Put a link to PCPartPicker in the OP; it helped me build my build; now I ned monez 2 bui it :(

No problem, RGT usually puts 3-4 videos up a day. Most are only a few minutes but some are much longer. I commented on some of their videos that they should cover some EVE news and they actually had an EVE video the other day. I don't know if it was because I said something but they did do an EVE video after FF and it was up after I commented. He rambles sometimes but for the most part RGT has interesting posts.

Ha! I'll give you a +1 for that, Buster. I'll always have to give you some respect for being Cassandra around here for so long, too.
Anyway, I will post constructively and then go on my merry way since you are doing a good job of not being a PC mastur race troll here. Just want to comment on 2 things you mentioned:
1) You can hook up a PC to the TV in your living room:
Technically I "can" but it's not practical, not only space-wise, but again it puts people in the position of spending more money on a dedicated gaming PC because that PC is not going to be particularly useful for anything else now. Especially when other people may occasionally want to use the TV, even more so in cases like mine where I pretty much need to sit my 2 young kids in front of Sesame Street if I want an hour of peace to get some work done!
2) You can use a game pad/controller on a PC
Again, yes, it is possible to do so. However, I will be hopelessly gimped against the KBM crowd using high performance macro-enabled mice. Not the even playing field I am looking for.
Quitting cold turkey was impossible. The forum patch is helping me kick the habit!

Yeah, pricing is bonkers but what would a physical copy of Dark Souls 2 for PC cost you compared to console? The whole point was to point at that games on PC are way cheaper and if you keep your eyes open, you might even get a really juicy deal even for new titles. |

1) Being a father and a family man, it is much harder to justify spending that kind of money on a "gaming" PC but how would you justify the price point of a new console that goes for 400 dollars (if you are in the States) and 60 dollars a pop for games? And how do you even find the time to get your gaming on?
2) Fact is, you have people running around with KBM setups now in Dust so how is that be any different? |

Thanks for this. I don't understand why some in the Dust community think that there's no interest in going PC now that Legion is going to be a PC title.
I hope that the information contained in this thread is helpful to you, and others in your situation.

- I play after everyone else goes to bed (sleep is for the weak), and only for an hour or 2 a day, and not every day. I'm not the hardcore gamer I used to be in my 20's. I spend more time with the kids than I do gaming, and they also very much enjoy the blu-ray player in the PS3.
- My kids are also pretty damn spoiled, I'm afraid. Money is not an issue for me, but it is for others. Many have already used up their gaming budget on a PS4, so a second investment in a PC is not an option. For me it's just money I could spend better on something else.
- KBM for Dust was a mistake and a concession to CCP's EVE playerbase. If you have been playing Dust or on the forums as long as I have you would know that KBM on Dust is hamstrung and not nearly the advantage it would be on a PC, though in beta it was apparently better. Never used it so I can only repeat what I've heard from others.

Could we please take these arguments to a different thread. There are many ways to play PC from the comfort of your living room, KB/M or otherwise. This thread is intended to help those who would consider upgrading to PC if they had the necessary information to do so in an informed way.
This thread is not about the console/PC war.

Sleep is indeed for the weak! As for me, I bought a PS3 because it had a fairly competent bluray player. I do my gaming on PC.
Being a parent, there is always something better to spend the money on regardless how much money you may or may not have.
Well, being a EVE player of 11 years, I was pretty outraged that CCP decided to go with a (in my mind) inferior platform and most of the EVE community didn't buy the argument from CCP that it would cut into the EVE subscriptions if they went with PC from the getgo. I ended up with a close beta code and wasn't really too impressed to be brutally honest with you but then again, beta is beta. But seeing Legion coming to PC makes me more happy that you could possibly realize. :) |

This thread is not about the console/PC war.
Ok, then those people should realize:
1) Building a PC from scratch is not simple in the same way changing spark plugs/oil/brakes on a car or doing your own plumbing is not simple. If you are not confident in your skills, or you are not at all handy, it may be a better choice to pay someone else to do it. The kids at geeksquad will do it for you under the table for $100. Braking your own components from ESD/misplacement/etc... will quickly add that $100 and then some. Also ESD may significantly reduce your components effective life.
2) You are going to spend more, both in money and time. Aside from the build cost, your electricity bills will be higher, and you will need to spend time on many things that you would not even consider with a console.
3) Getting a PC hooked up to your TV in your living room adds another complication with many considerations.
If you are handy and have the spare time, it really shouldn't be a big problem though (in much the same way the car/house stuff isn't). Just make sure you read up on things, understand what TIM (thermal interface material) is, the differences in brand quality, and use proper protection (ESD gloves at least.) PC components really only fit in their designated spots, so it isn't rocket science.

While I think you've overstated the difficulty considerably, these are still good things to consider.

IF you were to tell me plumbing, electrical, drywall, soldering(be it jewelry or electronic components) or even basic automotive work (you know, disc brakes, exhaust systems, stereo systems, EGR systems) were difficult in the least, I would think that you were overstating it as well.
Trust me, to some people it is wasy, to others just the prospect of reaching inside of a computer is too much to ask, just like getting underneath a 2 ton vehicle.
