I love it.
One of my favorite recurring complaints about snipers is along the lines of, "UR SO DUM Y U NOT B GUD N HELP UR TEEM UR COWWERD".
Right--because when I'm on a team that's getting beat worse than Tina Turner, it's way more valuable for me to throw clones down the drain trying to run on the frontline (something I do adequately, at best) than it is for me to get at least a few kills and deny the enemy WP for harvesting my corpse (which, you know, adds to the odds of their calling an orbital, further obliterating out already sad forces).
I encourage other snipers to contribute their observations of obfuscated anti-sniper propaganda, and ask our detractors to fling mad sh!t, for it is sunny outside, and I feel ALIVE!

Sniping, it's that thing done when there's a Thale's you want to make someone on the other team lose... though I much prefer watching an OB get dropped on the lone sniper.

Funny. When I'm in a match and the enemy is losing (slightly, not getting stomped) and then you see a couple of enemy players chicken out and go red line sniping because they can't handle a bit of heat, then I know that we won the battle. And from my experience, chicken snipers make the team lose every single time.
That's what this game needs! 10 guys sniping, while 5 guys are trying to capture an objective with 15 enemies protecting it. And all the enemy has to do is just stand behind cover. |

Yep. I don't mind snipers, sometimes I think " We really could use a good sniper or two", sometimes I do it myself. My problem is with those that insist on sniping even when it isn't helpful or do it because they just don't want to die. I have seen so many matches lost just because there are people sniping instead of pushing the objective that it is hard to see them as anything but a net liability.
Because, that's why.

I swear this is the fourth or fifth time this point has been made.
Snipping is a symptom of fotm. Its what people do when they feel they have no chance against the enemy. There are plenty of real snipers. The snippers (not a typo) always go away when the fotm is rectified.

Fa sho--I've been playing assault/sentinel a lot lately, since I really want to improve my toe-to-toe gun game. But still, there's cost/benefits, ya know--after a certain point, it's most economical for me to switch to a scout or sniper. However, the more often I play on the frontline, the further out that point is in the match (and lately I've been running assault the entire match).
I'm typing this and it occurs to me: on the one hand, you have the folks I'm making fun of, that will always oppose snipers for not getting into the thick of it when their team is getting stomped; on the other, you have the folks that b!tch about how cowardly snipers are for OHKing them and being "uncounterable"--I imagine most of these folks experience this rage when their team's getting stomped and their most valiant efforts to turn the tides on the frontline, in vain though they may be, go unrewarded. (I imagine these folks are getting stomped already because why else would dying once to a sniper be a big deal? Unless you go full t@rd and keep putting yourself in the position to get killed by the same sniper...)

Yesterday during a Dom a sniper dared to leave the redline. I knew the general geography where he was. Running back to my deployment I drove a LAV the long way around looking for him. Jumped out 50 or so meters away and snuck up behind. One flux a four mass driver shots later he was dead. MY GOD that boy had the plates stacked. After the first MD round he started hopping like he could out-jump the explosions. It gave me the evil giggles.
The best sniper kills are with a Forge Gun to the butt at ten meters. The rag-doll is hilariously undignified.
I channel my sniper hate into productive killing.
Snipers do a good job keeping me from using the high ground effectively. Many a game I would have rained terror down below with MD or FG if not for a meddling sniper.

True sniper hate comes from RED LINE SNIPERS, where the only counter is ANOTEHR sniper or a tank.
Remove RED LINE SNIPING and snipers can do whetever they want without getting hate.
But hitting me with a thales sniper rifle , 250mts BEHIND the red line is just WRONG.

The usefulness of a sniper depends on where they are. As a general rule of thumb, the safer the sniper perch is, the less useful it is, up until a certain point (AKA sniping at combat rifle range) where it becomes less useful again.
The vast majority of snipers are useless, because snipers are usually the people who put KDR before winning or actual effectiveness. There are exceptions (yours truly), but they're rare.

High Five. I have empty dropships just for these occasions. When a Thale sniper is too annoying to my team, I jump into one of the dropships and drop it on their heads. I think that the money loss is totally worth it in this case.
I am not the only one that does this. I remember trying to get this one sniper, in my cheap suits, and there I see a friendly dropship near the sniper. And a heavy suit jumps out of that dropship, the vehicle comes down crashing and exploding while the heavy suit puts half of his magazine into the sniper's face. The ragdoll effect made me laugh so hard that I decided to stay on the red line and die with the heavy. It looked like pure white rage paid him a visit. If you could cut off the limbs in Dust, I'd see meat flying everywhere. He was just as sick of the sniper as I was. It was glorious.

what i dont get is why someone takes out a thales 300 meters deep in their redline and gets 5 kills, when i get 20 kills and never die in a militia suit with a basic tac sniping from the enemies redline. if u dont want to lose it, dont use it. when i bring out my thales, its only to countersnipe another thales, or to snipe a DNS squad from their own redline (never lost a thales before either)

I don't hate enemy snipers.
What I do hate however are scrub ass cowards on my own team who, as soon as a battle starts to take a bad turn, spawn in some crappy sniper fit and camp in our redline and take useless potshots at the enemy. This of course further harms our war effort in the battle by reducing our sides number of personel doing any actual fighting.
At the very least you chickenshits could spawn in some cheap MLT fits and push forwards. But no, you camp the redline and destroy the efforts of the entire team.

Your range should be reduced to ~ 300-350 meters, then I have no problem with snipers. I have a problem with red-line snipers.

Who snipes from the spot where they last died? Idiot snipers do.....if you even get hit as a sniper you should RELOCATE IMMEDIATLY...plain, simple, intelligent decision...wait alot of dust mercs don't have that I think it depends on the situation. There are certain spots that offer very wide, clear views of the map, have good cover, are easy to spot, but otherwise a pain to get to. Also, if I'm running a cheap(er) sniper fit and already have 5+ kills from that spot, I'll usually just keep on rolling, since one death is a fair trade for an extra kill or two on top of the 5+.
I think the better reason to move is because there aren't any targets--being willing to hold down a good spot that offers a wide range of targets to pick from and a good view of objectives is a sign of a baller sniper. I'm not afraid to brawl with anyone that tries to come at me; it's almost more satisfying to use my SMG to take out the sniper hunters that bring the fight to me.
I've found that if I tank the first shot (which I usually do if it's not a Thales/Charge headshot), I can get to cover, rep up, and, thanks to not dying and therefore getting the red arrow indicating what o'clock the shot came from, an 8 time out of 10, pinpoint my counter and take them out. At this point, there's a 50/50 chance they'll either bug out or get desperate/go insane from rage--in either case, the ball is in my court. Just gotta keep scanning any openings where the counter might try to take you out from another angle. This, too, is a great way to get some extra kills if you're familiar with the maps, since plenty of countersnipers will try to take you out from another angle(s) that you may already be familiar with.
In my experience, countersnipers (in whatever form) are not usually a huge threat. For this reason, I think it can be completely sensible to stick around after taking a hit. However, getting killed is a different story. You hit me once, shame on you. You kill me and I come back, shame on me.

Ah snipers. Besides the very rare HAV kill they are my favorite thing to destroy. I do play with a few good ones though who do have an effect on battles.
Yesterday I snuck up onto the enemies redline just below a ridge in a militia sniper suit. Just slowly popped up and down along the rise moving back and forth between kills. 8 snipers dead, six head shots, 2 proto kills all with a militia. The tunnel visions scrub snipers get is ridiculous.
My other anti-sniper tactic tends to have me suicide more but there is no other rush like popping up behind a sniper nest unnoticed. I slap on a militia Min light suit, militia damps, breach scrambler and a grenade. POP, POP, POP with the barrel touching their heads. "Hey Guys, Snipers are dead! HAHAHAHAHA"
