I'm pretty sure most of us chose to post friendly and helpful advice in response to a politely-worded question from someone who doesn't appear to know any better. Whether they're posting this thread to get some laughs, raise awareness of an issue, or because they legitimately don't know, that doesn't negate the value of giving polite and helpful answers so that when a person shows up who's legitimately as poorly-informed as the OP is behaving, they'll find the relevant information.

Just bear in mind also that some players, predominantly those that played scout before the most recent release a few weeks ago, have honed their play-styles to use stealth very very effectively. This takes player skill, and does not require paying to be invisible (aka fitting cloaking equipment). I have killed many a merc without me using a cloak, and can guarantee plenty of them knew only as much as you did when dying. And there are far better scouts than me.
I encountered what you described last week - and since then I've been playing with fits to figure out a counter. I don't know whether the bug was being exploited or not, nor do I care, because the counter I have in mind requires some patience on my part. Next time this is happening to me, I will try out my counter and see what happens. Part of the fun for me :)

Right... Once and for all.. I'm not a troll. I don't see how me being new to the game makes me a troll. Everything I've read online says ask for help on the forum if you need it. After having a read of some other threads I can see this is a much discussed subject so apologies for starting a new thread about it. But it looks to me like the only people trying to discredit me are the people who use this bug to their advantage at the expense of players like me! Hell the people who've come clean and admitted they use the cloak and the shotgun like this have at least offered me some advice on what to do about it until it's fixed in the next patch. To them I say thank you - to the troll squealers I say - nice try!

To them I say thank you - to the troll squealers I say - nice try! To be fair, at the time when I saw that link to your character sheet, you had existed as a character for a grand total of TWENTY THREE MINUTES.
That's not long enough to have played the game for a while, come to the forums, created a thread and received that many replies.
So EITHER:
1) you're someone's alt account. Alt meaning alternate, and this account was created purely for coming to the forums anonymously, or
2) You're lying about having fought even a single battle before posting on the forum.
That said, you asked for counters to players killing you without being seen?
Try looking around more. Use your eyes. You can see the cloaked players (in my first post in the thread I posted what cloaked players look like). You can also see NON-cloaked players, but if you're not looking around, you won't.
As a new player, it will ALWAYS benefit you to stay with a squad. They don't necessarily have to be YOUR squad. Find a group who are sticking together, and attach yourself to them. When you're spawning, choose a spawn location (if available) that's close to your teammates, and make your way to them. Staying near teammates means you can cover their backs, and they can cover yours.
If you look at the minimap/scanner on your HUD, you'll notice there are 2 types of icons for infantry. A circle with an arrow is the old standard icon, and it shows the arrow pointing in the direction the player is looking. The new icon which shows for players using certain dropsuits - primarily the new ones - is a "chevron" or a "V" shape, and the open end of the "V" is indicating the direction this player is facing. When you're more experienced, you can use this information to help identify when it's safe to approach an enemy. Until you've got the relevant skills (as in both in-game skills AND correctly-assigned skill points), the best use for this information is to track the movements of your TEAMMATES and keep yourself covering their backs and watching where your allies are NOT watching.
If you're with a group of 3 - 4 players, and you're all watching each other's backs, enemies who try to get behind for that "invisible" kill will have a much more difficult time of it.
Additionally, while you may say your TV is working fine, I'd suggest looking in the menu and checking the colour, brightness and contrast settings. Colour and contrast in particular should be turned up a bit from the settings you normally use while watching TV, and if you play any other games with cloaking as an option, adjusting these settings will help in those games as well. DUST's cloaked players are significantly more visible than the cloaking in many other games, even while the cloaked player is standing still and at their least visible. If you're regularly having trouble seeing them, I'm sorry, but that IS a problem with the settings on your TV. |

It's a bug and will be fixed SOON(TM). I've seen this claim a few times from different people.
It would be nice to have a source for these claims.
The decloak animation is an INTENDED mechanic. The ability to draw your weapon WHILE decloaking is an intended part of that intended mechanic.
The process is as follows.
Player opens weapon wheel. This doesn't interrupt cloak.
Player selects weapon. NOW cloak is broken, and the decloak animation begins. The decloak sound plays instantly.
Put away cloak animation happens, then leads to drawing weapon. Cloak is still in decloak animation.
Once drawn, the player can fire their weapon. At this point, if you're fast enough, it's possible to (sometimes) get a second shot off before the decloak animation completes.
THIS IS WORKING AS INTENDED. The decloak animation makes the player more visible than the normal movement shimmer, which in itself is lighting you up in bright blue. You're quite visible when moving, and EVEN MORE VISIBLE while decloaking. You're still not FULLY visible though, so you're still arguably "cloaked" while firing. But it's not a bug. It's the proper mechanics designed and implemented by CCP.
The bug is that some people have found ways to circumvent the decloaking at the first step, and to remain cloaked while their weapon is drawn. In this case, the decloak sound is drowned out by their opening shot, and it's not until they've ALREADY FIRED that the decloak animation begins. Because of the extra time saved by not swapping away from the cloak and drawing their weapon, this can allow a Shotgunner exploiting the glitch to fire 3 shots before they're fully visible, one of which will be fired BEFORE they enter the visible decloak animation.
CCP are not only working on this problem, but have already patched the most easily-repeatable method for triggering it so people can no longer exploit the bug as easily. But the ability to fire up to twice before FULLY decloaking is not - and has never been - a bug. |

Sorry (not an alt) dude - if you have a problem with people just having cloaks in general that is just a reason (amongst many I guess) that you won't enjoy dust. Unfortunately CCP decided this one item was going to be a scouts role bonus - we're gimped if we don't equip them.
If its just the being shot by someone who is still technically cloaked, then I think like most others, that issue is going to be balanced (ironically in the the campaign before cloaks were released fire from cloak was supposed to be an intended feature, but in removing it, created a worse situation).
If its just being shot in the back, then that is something that would happen without cloaks - it's how scouts fight, it's just with the latest patch the amount of scout numbers have grown - not just because scouts were improved but because the medium frames weren't - the medium frame players had a lot of advantages they don't now and they had little experience fighting scouts in general, so really a lot of the complaints you see are just misdirected cries for help from players that don't know any better.
Hope that helps!

The counter is what Luk below me describes and then some patience if they're also cloaked (though you could just add another enhancer and I suspect that would show up anything and everything). Patience, because they can't stay cloaked indefinitely, so just wait for a bit and see if they appear.
