There are sneaky cloaked scouts, and the deaths you are experiencing is one of them sneaking up behind you and murdering you. I may from time to time be one of those scouts. Really the only way to protect yourself from guys like me is to squad up and stay with your squad. Failing that try to travel with blue dots and periodically check your 6.

Cloaked shotgun scouts can get a shot or two off before they fully decloak. From your description, this is the most likely cause of your deaths.

They're scouts running cloaks with a shotgun.

The cloaks have built in dampning, meaning, you probably won't be able to find them on your radar if you don't dedicate your suit to scan modules.

Not all are invisible. They shimmer when they move.

Your cross hairs turn red when you point at a cloaked scout.

here's the thing. Yes there is a bug that lets you fire once MAYBE twice before the cloak completely vanishes. However, where guys are mistaken is in believing this makes a difference. Unless the scout is being lazy, overconfident, or placed in a bad spot (like being seen or detected) we'll be coming at you from behind or the sides.

We really like to hang out around objectives. My general rule is, if you are hacking something alone assume you will die. If you manage to hack the thing and live, bonus, if you don't you just got what you expected Good luck out there

If he literally didn't appear at all, there are three possible explanations:

1. He was behind you, and might not have even been using a cloak, because he was behind you. It shouldn't be any surprise at all to you that enemies shooting you in the back have a tendency not to be visible when you're only able to look forwards. It's possible the enemy used a cloak to get behind you unseen before shooting you in the back.

2. There's a glitch that neither CCP nor any of the active forum users know about which can allow a player to continue firing while cloaked without breaking the cloak. The only known glitch allows a player to remain fully cloaked UNTIL THEY FIRE, but after that point, the decloak animation occurs as normal and they become somewhat - though not completely - visible for about a second before appearing normally. This can allow an extra shot before the cloak effect ends completely - meaning 2 - 3 shots instead of the usual 1 - 2 you'll get from proper use of the cloak.

3. Your TV settings are bad enough that the cloaked player isn't visible even during the most visible part of the cloaking - decloak animation makes players quite easy to see but it does have their image blended in somewhat with the background. If you turn up your colour and contrast settings, this problem should be solved.

NOTE: I'm leaving option 2 as a possibility even though I consider it to be highly unlikely.

Just bear in mind also that some players, predominantly those that played scout before the most recent release a few weeks ago, have honed their play-styles to use stealth very very effectively. This takes player skill, and does not require paying to be invisible (aka fitting cloaking equipment). I have killed many a merc without me using a cloak, and can guarantee plenty of them knew only as much as you did when dying. And there are far better scouts than me.

I encountered what you described last week - and since then I've been playing with fits to figure out a counter. I don't know whether the bug was being exploited or not, nor do I care, because the counter I have in mind requires some patience on my part. Next time this is happening to me, I will try out my counter and see what happens. Part of the fun for me :)
