A friend of mine started playing today so I made an alt squaded up and went to the academy w him, kind of a personal tutor, show him what equipment's what and so on. Hit 1120 wp at the end of the first match realized I would get the boot so we decided to run "operation meat shield" for a few more matches, I draw people out he kills them. Started the next match and I get ganked by a viziam... da fuq? So turns out it's 1200 wp/squad not player to graduate. Because you know the battle academy is WAY too long as it is.
1st match and he admits if I weren't there to explain that was a garbage game he would've just quit and deleted it him-"So that happens a lot?" me-"yup" him-"wow you guys really need some matchmaking or something" me-"... hahaahhaha"

HTFU. Let's be fair bro, we weren't going up against people with 30+ million SP either. The NPE needs serious work because of we don't get new players and continue losing bitter vets through normal attrition our game will die.

When I joined pub matches were battle academy. Hardly anyone ran anything other than MLT and I fumbled my way to the marketplace. Back then no one knew what a Repair Tool was so I was getting shot by people who thought I had pulled some sort of weird weapon on them!

Wow, based on some of these responses I swear half of the community wants this game to die.
The majority of matches involve some element of cheap OHK's, ROFL stomps of your team, getting killed even though you got the jump on the other player and for extra fun, lag, no place to train and a need to live on the forums to know what's going on with the game.
If the first few matches turn people off the game permanently that is a problem for all of us who love this game. It really shouldn't be that hard to retain players with a FREE to PLAY shooter.
A better NPE is not a bad thing for vets, I can't understand the thinking behind hating on suggestions to improve it.
When I started with DUST the NPE was also terrible, but that was a CLOSED BETA. There is no excuse for it to be this poor with the game having been released for a year.

When I joined all I had was a mass driver and a needle. I went against guys with their cores maxed running around in death wielding AR/LR suits slaughtering the entire opposing team. But one day I was accepted by a corp because of my excellent noob logi skills. I was the guy stacked with stamina regs running across the map to save your sorry ass, I was the guy that was in the tank with you just in case you needed a repair tool. But enough of my rants, what most people don't say is that EVE is exactly like this you gotta find a group of guys that make you laugh and stick with them. Sure i'll jump on the band wagon of retardation.
Yeah and back in the hard days the only players around were the people who just installed and were going to quit in a week and the beta players with their 30-50 mil sp were just rolling over us constantly, man I wish I could have just one battle academy match back then...... wait.
There is way too much Edge going on in here, everyone's going to get cut. Claiming to have had it hard when seeing one proto suit was like seeing a unicorn let alone the full time proto death squads that appear in every match today.
I know its tandamount that everyone who plays fps thinks they are god's gift to fps games, but when you all were running around with 1 mil sp and no battle academy you were still better off then now, when you have 520k sp after 5 battle academy matches (If you were lucky) and then run into a wall of maxed out skill using vets. I know you guys like to think you are MLG pros but it really is just the double to triple ehp and damage/accuracy boosts showing those noobs what's up.
It's like if WoW threw the level 10s in with the level 60s and said HTFU then whined about how they used to have to fight other level 10s back when they started but the font was so bad u guise! |

But then who will you have to inflate your kdr if it keeps spreading word of mouth that this game is ****? Which is what is happening right now, everytime someone installs this game then get's raped when CCP throws them in a lobby with someone who has much better gear then them when they haven't even learned the game.
Take Payday 2 for instance, tons of **** that isn't self explanatory that must be learned as you go. Now imagine if Payday 2 only had 3 day missions on overkill and a jewelry store on normal. It doesn't though because although Overkill can **** things up like all gaming companies do at times they weren't full blown ******** and figured they should have varying levels of play.
Call of Duty on the other hand doesn't have anything whatsoever when it comes to varying difficulty in a multi-player environment. But here's the thing, Call of Duty basics can be mastered in about 10 minutes with the nuances in about 3 hours.
This game on the other hand has maybe about 1 hour of basics to master with about 5 hours of understanding the nuances, and then a sp ceiling requiring 6 months to a year of grinding to "git gud" and harden the **** up.
This game is artificially skilled, not individually skilled which is fine I knew what I signed up for, but don't get hit with a stupid stick and try to pretend that grinding is an acceptable form of skill acquisition and by skill I mean player ability not skill points.
You can hate the newbies but don't be a pretentious ass that thinks he's good because he he has the numerical skill boosts that make him better. Understand that most "Humans" play games to have fun and don't find hiding in their redline or running out as cannon fodder as fun. And whether or not you care, this game is hemorraging money and is at this point a tax write off and it will get closed down if CCP cannot appeal to a larger market. |

I know for myself, when my ps3 friends ask me about this game when they see me playing it from time to time, I just tell them it's my guilty pleasure. I tell them though no one should start playing this game, there is no real reason to play a game like this "now", when it started sure, but at this point, it's a sinking ship with no land in sight. This new update isn't going to do anything but give the vets some new things to play with for a bit, hell that's why I'm playing again for now, but the newbies will still be getting thrown into the pit with a rusty spoon and told to "HTFU".
Edit: After all games are meant to be fun. Inb4 flaying their genitals by dying over and over to proto stomps = fun
Double-Edit: Also, Inb4 but Eve is like this game. Really? Where's the ******* PVE? Because, PVE would give newbies something to do between wincing from the proto-stomps. Where's our High-Sec? How is this game anything like Eve? Because it shares lore? Woooooooooo!!! |

I would agree the NPE parallels to EvE are a bit of a stretch as the games are operating under completely separate business models.
Only a few percent of FTP players are going to spend money and as players gain SP, they have less use for boosters and the like meaning sales to existing players could stagnate. In my opinion, BPO's were the best monetized option that CCP has offered and they are on their way out. I don't even look at the new packs as I have enough SP to skill into at least the STD level of the suits and weapons I'm interested in.
A successful FTP game needs a large, renewing player base. EvE has true PVE to ease players into the game and the subscription model to make a smaller player base viable. DUST has neither of these.
A stagnant userbase with no need for consumable microtransactions is the quickest way to kill DUST. Everyone should support a better NPE to attract new players. I am really struggling to think of how a bigger userbase would be a negative for any vet.

I know every time I get invited to try a FTP game, I always make a point to do a day or two of youtube research before I download the game and give it a try. Doesn't everybody? (/sarcasm)
Seriously, though I understand your point which I think is you get out of DUST what you put into it and that's a valid point.
However, no one is saying new players should be able to spawn into a PC match without putting in the time, but should new players be kicked straight into tankbush/protostomp 514?
How does a better NPE hurt anyone?

From what I can tell, it's because CCP itself on numerous occasions, even so far as making a ******** music video, has supported the screw the new guy attitude. Yes it's childish but the fans will mimic the attitude of the developers.
That and of the hundred or so people I've spoken to over comms since I started playing this only 5 of them could I say are mature adults. Plenty of adults, but many are your stoner gangster wannabes or the classic fps nerd where he has to one up everyone in conversation and act like a complete tool.

there's absolutely no way i can talk someone into downloading this and then feel good about myself.. 3-5 fatal errors a night, every match is totally lagging, tank spam, etc. no normal person would put up with this sht. the lag and hardfreezing and fat erroring has reached an unacceptable level and they're just like ignoring the issue. the lag is effecting my whole squad so it cant be just my connection. the server just stops, everyone freezes running in place.. then it starts up again in between all that is the normal lag. this game retrded as F.

The new EP might turn things around, but being a new player now is an exercise in masochism. The longer this goes on, the more potential customers are lost for good. |

yep thinking outside the box made life easy ^^ I know every time I get invited to try a FTP game, I always make a point to do a day or two of youtube research before I download the game and give it a try. Doesn't everybody? (/sarcasm)
He had been doing youtube research for the last few days too lol and I tossed him a M isk just to cover intro costs which helped. also managed to drop a dude and steal his tank on his 4th match ever which was definitely the highlight of the day.
We're squading up again this afternoon so this is actually a success story but just further illustrates the abysmal NPE

I barely remember the Academy on this character. All I remember is seeing a DS for the first time and wanting it so badly (sadly I don't really fly any more - lack of content)
On my mid alt I went in and breezed through with the frontline. Was a good fight actually
Then on my heavy alt I went in with militia Heavy + basic HMG and their tiny little minds couldn't handle it.
Instantly passed through and never even got to the objective (I was literally the only blue there on the point. The others were, no lie, killing themselves in the redline or riding burning LAV's about to explode - sad part was no enemies even touched them and they were fully loaded 3 at a time)
...indeed... wow

For the record you are absolutely correct on the extra 1 mil. A family member started a new account so I sent them a mil to help buy skillbooks. I suggested they go Logi since I knew they had a better chance of survival if they weren't on the frontline. I was shocked that if I had not done that if probably would have taken 5+ matches to unlock even the std minmatar suit. That means 5 matches of getting absolutely wrecked in militia if you were lucky enough to get a kill at all.
If you stick it out for 5-10 matches and have someone who knows where to put your SP it gets better, but I really believe many players wouldn't even know there was a light at the end of the tunnel.
Increase the new account base funds by 1 mil and reduce ISK and SP requirements to skill into STD level equipment.
Neither of those suggestions hurts vets at all unless you're scared of noobs in a STD suit.

Correct, but perhaps not how you meant.
DUST will either adapt to the fact it is operating under a FTP microtransaction model or it will die.
CCP is a business and if DUST can't make money they will have to make a decision on whether to continue development at a loss.
I hope the last message on the "News" screen when CCP runs out of money and has to shut down the servers is either "HTFU" or "Welcome to New Eden".
The irony would be epic.

HTFU.
This is pretty much what happened for me when I joined during Codex. I was playing on a "small" screened (by today's standards) standard definition TV and couldn't read ANYTHING. It wasn't till I started playing on a computer screen in HD that I knew what the squad/corp/etc tabs even said. With that said, the current NPE is garbage. The Academy was a step in the right direction and then they all the sudden said "Hey this feature is working too well, lets sodomize it like we do everything else."
Stuff....?

I love the "HTFU, when I started... blah blah blah", like somehow "this game used to be ****" is a reason to leave it that way, or "adapt or die" funny how this is used most often by people arguing against the game changing. (ya know... evolving)
Anyway if people are so opposed to logical improvement in a game how about you back to playing MAG... oh wait... so THAT'S what happens when the playerbase stagnates...
